You don't gonna learn anything with this communist propaganda. Salazar knew what the communists wanted to do to the country and after his death, this bastard communist return to the country to impose a soviet regime. We have been ruled by this parasites 50 years and we had enough!

Álvaro Cunhal was an intellectual, I don't buy for a second he didn't speak English. That, and his immediate corrections of the translator, make me sure speaking Portuguese in that interview was just a power move.

In the 25th of April 1975, the constitutional assembly elections (95% participation) gave only 31 in 250 seats to extreme-left parties, including 30 seats for the communist party. It made clear that the portuguese didn't desire a communist regime. Later, in the 25th November coup attempt, The Portuguese Communist Party refrained from any part in it, knewing they had no popular support, securing their place in democracy. But, don't forget, many other small and more extreme left (and right) wing movements existed and most violence came from them.

I remember these troubled times like if they had been yesterday. Amazing how it did not end up in a messy civil war, but the communists would not stand a chance because the centre and north of Portugal would put up a formidable popular armed resistance in a geography and urban environment very unsuitable to intruders. We could then end up with a North Portugal (liberal and democratic) and a South Portugal (a communist dictatorship). The South would be short-lived either by being invaded later from the North or from an intervention from Nato/Spain. I believe the community saw the writing on the wall, and realised it would be a suicidal endeavour, so they tok two steps back and let the democratic process run in the end.

After the 25 April days, was in on many interviews with TU organisers in Lisnav & Setnav shipyards. These middle level organisers definitely spoke English although our questions were made through an interpreter. Gave them time to think about their answer ( smart guys). I was very impressed by this. I was young as were they. I have no doubt Cunhal spoke English.

Let's not forget some stuff. First, the CDS headquarters were attacked by "extreme-left" groups - but their leaders, like Jorge Coelho, Durão Barroso, Pacheco Pereira, Ana Gomes and others then moved to adhere to PS and PPD... Obviously, their actions favoured the right wing. Second, I'd like to emphasize that all those interviewed spoke in English, instead of using an interpreter like Cunhal did (and he did knew the English language: his translation - while imprisoned - of "King Lear" is unanimously considered excellent). With that position Cunhal wanted to emphasize that the Portuguese are at the same level of any other people. When speaking on behalf of the PCP he always spoke in Portuguese, albeit he could speak four or five languages. Even nowadays the communist MEP in the EU Parliament always speak in Portuguese. Plus, the UK isn't a part of the EU nowadays... As for the "communist domination"... the PCP only had 3 ministers in the six provisional governments, never more than 2 at the same time, and one (Cunhal) always without exceutive powers (the others were Avelino Gonçalves, Ministry of Labour of the 1st PG, and Veiga de Oliveira, with responsibilities in the social and infrastructure areas in the IV and VI PGs. Not much to "dominate", right? This reporter is very biased. In later pieces he openly showed admiration for the anticommunist forces that destroyed PCP's headquarters, beat its militants, and even killed people. Remember: in 25 April 74 there were 4 deaths caused by the fascist political police, on purpose; the military unwantedly killed a political police agent that tried to flee, and a policeman due to the comotion - I mean, those two deaths were accidental. After that, it was the right wing that killed a soldier on 11 march 75, on purpose; an incident caused the death of a provocateur on the 12th, but without premeditation. All other killed people till the 80's were communists or left-wing. In its history the PCP never resorted to terrorism or assassinations, not even of the worst torturers.
