What nice genuine people showing you the traditional way and the modern way with those grapes, very few in the UK these days seem to give up any info or secrets - it's a knowledge is power mentality and so few want to help others also nobody seems to have time for others they account for every second in the crazy chaos and rat race they have created for themselves. Really liked this one it shows the relaxed lifestyle peace and tranquility, I noticed some grapes were green others dark blue or black so guessing if you had separated those by colour you would get different taste in wine, also wondered if you can have early and late grapes so a crop spread-out through the year. You have a piece of heaven over there it's beautiful to see, thanks again for sharing.

Thanks Stevie, im. Not sure, I think all of our vines matured at pretty much the same time however you might be able to leave some on the vines linger than others. I'm very much a novice still so this is just a guess

Love it. Great to see your joining the local community activities. More grapes, more help, more wine, everybody happy. Respect to their traditions goes a long way. the climate has changed a lot from my childhood upto now,on the 9th of July my mom picked a large basket full of ripe figs, that's almost 2 months to soon but hey that's climate change, someone tell Trump he still doesn't believe or he pretends hehehe even picking grapes the first days of September!!!,I was raised on this homemade wine, mixed with water or some lemonade must have been 4 or 5 years old,for breakfast we had homemade cheese with bread and olives and some wine kind the same thing people in Northern Europe like to do hehehe except they have to go to a pub or a bar!!Brings a lot of memories watching your video Ken,it was the same in those days, every neighbour came to help it's fair to say they were all related ,looks like your gonna have wine for the whole year, the more sugar in the grapes the higher the alcohol content, the next days, the grapes will start to ferment it's as if they are boiling, you should have tasted the juice Ken it's delicious in the first stage, maybe you did, thanks for another great video, have fun!!!

@@patrickkonig we had a feeling that things were about to get tough for the UK with Brexit approaching but could never have guessed how bad it could get with the lockdowns etc. The idea was to get as self sufficient as possible so we could live very cheaply and remotely if need be and it's worked quite well for the way things seem to be panning out worldwide. We arent really self sufficient but out monthly bills are so cheap that at this point it doesn't really matter and there is always space and ways of sorting that out in future 😁👍

I remember when i was little to go with my parents to the 'vindima' ( payed labour) in Palmela region , and also in Alentejo to help some neighbours of my grandad , by going inside the 'tina' (big container) and squash the grapes with our feet (cleaned obviously) (done like this when is large quantities ) , they also had a manual crush machine ( similar the ones they have here in the Uk for Cider) , good old times . OKportugal , you are a rare type, we certainly hope you can make some money on the products you’re growing, most importantly, make some income that will help you get some family and friends to visit or it will get lonely just the two of you and I hate to think what will follow after that, especially around the holidays. So, moving to Portugal can require a little more, including your mental health to keep up with the environmental demands of being in a foreign country...there is a clear difference of being on vacation to foreign lands for a week but actually living there. But I’m sure you all have figured that out. Nevertheless, our excitement for your family in my country is large, I want bragging rights about you and your sweetheart, you all came across so sincere that we hope that you really, really be successful in your endeavor.

So nice 2 see u both settling in & hanging out with locals; simple, but such kind people. Being my roots fm Minho, that's not the so called 'traditional' way of making wine. U get family & friends 2 wash their feet & stomp grapes in a huge granite tank. In Minho one never sieves grapes, this must be a Beira's (region) way of doing it. U know u can sell wine 2 a CoOp, right? It pays ur efforts, although, u might want, 4 the sake of learning, stock up on wine for a couple of years. Wasps here are mean. Just got bit in my stomach by 1, as I was going down stairs of my house! Nest underneath stairs' arm railing. I wud get someone 2 go there & smoke them away, they r dangerous if picking grapes & with the doggies around. BTW, pls use gloves to protect ur hands & get some shears. Ur chickens, I'm concerned for them, as there are foxes & snakes in the area. Foxes are quite blatant, even taking away chickens in daylight. BTW that body of water you have shown near you is that Marateca Lake? It is soo gorgeous. I am looking to buy a 2nd weekend home and that area is beautiful. Loving how u are living life here in Portugal & hope u both stay well & keep happy. 🤗🙏❤️🇵🇹

Obrigado Maria. Its great having such friendly and kind neighbours. We shared in some of the work and will share the wine. Maybe next year we will sell the grapes. I dont know. We have bee suits now so i till put that on and go hunting for the nests! The Chickens have been free ranging since we bought them and we have not had any problems. Yes that is the Mareteca Dam. Its lovely there in the summer! I think our dogs do a great job scaring away the foxes, badgers, mongooses and birds of prey - and so does our big rooster Nandos :)

Ohh you are brave, you have a bee suit, good for you! Dogs do help keep foxes away, but there are many chicks. Two other vloggers, one in your neck of the woods, have had bad accidents with their chicks just so you are aware. It's so wonderful to have great neigbhors, but here we all help eachother like that. As an Azorean living in the United States for over 40 years, the traditional way of pressing grapes is using clean feet. Would that be considered the Stone Age? And as someone else has said, siesta is Spanish and the Portuguese and the Spanish are not the best of neighbors. Bom dia!

@@OKportugal that is great to hear! It is the best, you will taste a huge difference. Try to download two books by Sandor Katz, "wild fermentation" and "the art of fermentation". All my ferments are wild except sometimes making sauer kraut I do backslop, any alcohol made by wild fermentation tastes so much better than single species yeast ferments. The honey mead I told you about is also a wild ferment, just working with what our Lord has given us excites me a lot, it is a bit more tricky but very rewarding.

@@RonsardMoolman Cool I will check it out. This year we did not even think we would make wine as we had no equipment. It was only when our neighbour suggested that we do it together and I though it would be a great way to learn what I need to buy next year and how I can make my own. I'm also interested in making balsamic vinegar (to go with our own olive oil and Portuguese oven baked bread... yum).

@@OKportugal yeah it does take a bit of time, but its absolutely worth it. I forgot to mention, your vines looked great while you where harvesting, my English is leaving me now hahahaa, maar vir droëland(no irrigation) bosstokke(bushvines) het jou wingerd baie mooi gelyk, julle droë somers help baie daarmee, ek het geen witroes(mildew i think) skade of botritis gesien nie. With the wild fernent you are embrasing the "terroir" of terrein and that is the best you can do.

@@RonsardMoolman I think its amazing how these farmers have embraced the local climate, terrain over many generations and plant exactly the right stuff. They aren't forcing something that has no business growing here to flourish. I had no idea we could get through an entire year, a harvest of straw, grapes, corn and the upcoming olive harvest, all with zero irrigation! Its amazing! All the phases of planting have had multiple purposes and either feed nutrients back into the soil or feed animals that create more compost. Its been great to take in this knowledge - I'm blessed!

I see you're trying to improve your language skills. Good. :-) Just one tip: please avoid using spanish words, like "siesta" and "adios" because for many portuguese people it's a bit insulting when a foreigner assumes that spanish and portuguese are the same. They are not. We are proud of our language and we are proud of having resisted to so many attempts from Spain (or Castella, in the old days) to invade and conquer Portugal in our almost 900 years as a country. The portuguese equivalents are "sesta" and "adeus". Just a bit of portuguese culture. :-)

@@tessibento5985 No, it's different. The portuguese version doesn't have the "i". Spanish pronounce it, portuguese don't.
