Perhaps you could buy a boxed fan and put it on top of the window sill pointing inside the house at night when is cooler outside than inside... it draws the cool air from the out side... very nice. And yes, keeping the windows and door closed during the hot days is the key to survive the heat! I also keep all my curtains closed during hot days! Thanks for sharing! And yes I have tried to explain that there is a reason for animals to have a double coat, it protects them from the sun! (people love to shave their dogs here in the USA!!)

fill a couple of 2 lt. bottles with water and freeze them solid. Put both of them on a tray to collect condensation and put that tray with the bottles behind the fan. It will remove humidity from the air and provide cooler air from the fan.

Trouble is it cost money to freeze the water, and the refrigerator heats your room..
@lynnwilliams4006
@lynnwilliams4006 3 жыл бұрын
@@fredjones7307 the refrigerator is there and running anyway so there is no added cost. The more in the freezer and being frozen the less the refrigerator will run because the frozen items help keep the temperature cold. A couple of bottles of water aren't going to make ang difference in cost.

Beautiful Maine Coon cats! I have one that was actually born in Standish, Maine, USA. She's 13 now. They are the best cats. I also wanted to comment about your kitty with the intestinal cancer. I had a domestic shorthair black kitty that was diagnosed at 15 with intestinal cancer. She lived to a few months short of her 21st birthday. She did fairly well without treatment considering her age and diagnosis. Hope Nanook does well!

1. Generously water the outer floor before nightfall; repeat till the pavement temperature refreshes. 2. If you have enough water, water the roof tiles before nightfall. 3. Always keep closed the windows and shutters where the sun hits and open the windows that are in the shade.

Hi, we are in the mountains in Alicante in a cave house. We tried the magnetic fly screens for the doors, but found the glue holding them to the door frames melted in the heat, so we now have aluminium flyscreen doors, with self closing hinges ( the dogs can still go out & can open them to get in too!) Agreed with a fan at night- even in a Cavehouse, with no windows nearby. We have Seresto collars for the dogs too (and yearly inoculations against leishmaniasis) Scabibor collars do not seem to be as effective against the sand flies. Impressed the dogs do not hassle the chickens, our hounds would not have that self control! Lol

Here in the states in the south they use a powerful fan in the attic to suck the hot air out from the house and bring cool air from outside, works only in climates with dry summers (hot during day and cool at night), they turn on the fan for about 15 minutes with the windows open at night. Can’t use where I live because is humid and hot outside at night so we have central air.

I live in the Highlands of Scotland, in a top floor flat.....heat rises......so during the warmer period, ie sort of April onwards i take my duvet of the bed and i use my duvet covers alone on my bed.B ut even then when it gets really hot, the cover is too much. I also keep my bedroom blinds closed to keep the room cooler, and if i have to, i do use my ceiling fan. In winter months i have found some lovely micro-fibre duvet sets and sheets that i use and i no longer have to use an electric blanket :) For me, its a win win situation. Loving your videos, keep them coming.

Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) helps to keep away insects that transmit Leishmaniasis and other diseases. You can plant it near the non-flooding edge of the dam and near the places where your animals usually rest. It doesn't tolerate frost, but before sub-zero temperatures you can harvest the leaves for infusions and other culinary uses. In spring it will regrow. However in summer it needs frequent watering.

A little effective tip for warding off mosquitoes. . cut fresh eucalyptus branches, (twigs) - arrange them at the top of the bed head. The vapours off the leaves -onfuse the pests. They cannot smell you out. The effects will last up to 4 days or so, then you will need to replace with some fresh new twigs. It is very effective.

Hi Ken and Gina, by cointidence it has been getting to 31 degrees here in southwest England and we have employed our normal stratregies but it was really good seeing yours. Three things that we do that work quite well are versions of yours. 1. We keep the windows that are in the sun open but the curtains closed. 2. We tie the loft hatch open to allow the hot air to rise at night. 3. We take the duvet out of the the duvet cover and sleep under the cover.

Your dogs live a natural life. Dogs such as Siberian Huskies and other heavy coated dogs stuck in apartments are the big issue that people need to concern themselves with. Mountain regions and polar regions still experience very high summer temperatures as the norm all over this world....to quote Michael Caine...it seems "not a lot of people know that". Regarding your elderly cat. I think that you need to look into Vitamin D and K2 suppliments ( or a diet of fresh turkey meat due to high K2 content) because as you are seeing coming out into the sun is beneficial to her health. You might find in winter her condition goes down due to loss of the vitamin D benefits from the sun. There is a saying here in Finland. It is natural in the winter for the winter to takeae old. If you think about it....winter is the natural season of dying off. Sadly that sometimes means we lose our elderly family members. Last Christmas day we lost our dear elderly old cat. His health was going down in the winter over the last few years too. Summer he always picked up. Remember that Omega 3 from Eggs are very beneficial to you and your pets. If you can get your cats and your cats to eat raw eggs this will benefit the bodies response to inflammation especially if you can start increasing your intake of Turmeric ( good for pets too).

@@OKportugal no worries. Vladimir was a very fantastic and loved furry family member and always reminded me of the Luck Dragon from never ending story. He was born and rescued from the pony field my mum rented for our horses in a coastal villages in Nofolk, UK. He loved going to a neighbours farm and spending time hunting rabbits and I always felt sorry I was never going to be able to afford my own farm ( UK prices for land are not cheap as you both know). Anyway an unexpected meeting on board a ship I was working on ended with me selling up in the UK and moving to the Russian border in S.E Finland where massive well equipped family farms are simply being given away as there are no jobs etc. So Vladimir and his family of cats including his sister and his niece and nephew ended up with our dream come true! They flew in pairs as Finniar only allow cats to travel doubled up and not in separate cages which is quite a nice idea and worked for our cats. And they ended up with a beautiful warm ( and cool in the hot summers we get here) cozy home with an actual massive oven which burns beautifyl birch logs and a wood burning sauna and beneficial spring water from our own well which is plumbed in via a water pump house. Near zero traffic on the side lane near our farm and 2.HA of orchard and farm land and 2 massive barns to sleep and play in ( and a poly tunnel my husband constructed). Vladimir got all the way to 16 year of age and was loved every day. He benefitted from pussy parents who know hundreds of natural ideas for pet health so was kept safely away from some of the negative aspects of profiteering from vets and big pharma. One of the tips I forgot to share and it is a big one. Is if Portugal allows you to purchase CBD oil I highly suggest you keep this as well as colloidal silver ( which kills off bacterial eye infections and cleans and protects human and animals wounds to a better degree than any chemical product). I treated Vladimir's elderly sister when she was at the end of her life with CBD as she was fitting ...it a well researched antispasmodic and can cure epilepsy in some cases and in her case worked very well. It is also a known pain medication for pets and only one drop in a pipette is needed given on a regular basis if the problems persist and your vet has given up etc. I love cats and all other animals and it is always sad to think we will always outlive our pets. But you know yourself if you are giving them the very best and most natural existance so we have to always bear this in mind the day we lose them. It is very sad at the time and you will never replace them ...but their spirit will always be with you and they will watch over you and protect you always ( well that is how I think anway and I sometimes think that you will meet again in another life and another dimension :)

@@KovietUnionDefector Sounds like a lovely place you have over there. We did try CBD on Nanook but her hair started falling out bizarrely and only stopped after we stopped the CBD. Maybe she was allergic I don't know. Important thing is she seems to be much better and she is still enjoying her lazy farm life :)

@@OKportugal Any thing like potential reactions on your own cat or yourself have ofcourse to be monitored very closely and stopped as you say. Lazy farm life is most important for our sweet pets...and ourselves too...if we get time. I find there are a never ending list of jobs to do....but I have learned now not to get stressed about not getting them all done now. I realise you sometimes have to take time out to chill!! I love the look of your chill out zone....good for you. I love your channel because it is just nice to see there are other people who have the opportunity to live in peaceful countryside away from the UK where opportunities to live freely on a nice parcel of land in the countryside are now dead for most folks and are only for the rich.

To keep the mosquitos reproduction from going out of control, many farm tanks in Portugal have little fishes. I think it's called gambuzio. I used some in my tank (in the Algarve), and they did eat all the larvas in a couple of hours!!! They kept alive after, not sure how. :)

Sounds like you have well thought out plans for dealing with the heat. When we lived in Brasil we also used to take about 4 showers a day to cool down but you have the pool which serves the same purpose. It's also reassuring that it's a seasonal thing even though our climate is moving more to the extremes.Stay well!

Hi Ken & Gina, good 2 C u & "babies". Ever thought of investing in a ceiling fan? Not expensive (30-40€). Got mine @ Lidl when they had them & an electrician in 🇵🇹 is not expensive. I am in Santarém where it is🔥 as Hades. I live on top floor, meaning hotter still. Been goin mad w heat temps in upper 30's. Have AC in all rooms but so darn expensive. Last yr turned it @ 🌃 for a few hrs x 1 week. Bill almost €200 & this was just in my bedroom, not rest of the place! Absurdly expensive & a nightmare to sleep w/out AC. Overhead fan is better 4me as it is not on my face as I have sinus issues. U might also consider some shutters on your windows? Not sure if u have them, but they r my salvation & help keep heat out as well as window drapes. Thank you for the video. Keep cool. Regards🙏🤗

It's great to see your ankle is healing nicely, Gina! Just another tip when moving around in Portugal in the summer, always take a water bottle filled with water. Then you won't have to stop and buy plastic ones.

Thanks Nick, Gina always freezes a bottle of water and takes it around with her. Its so hot now that it unfreezes in a couple of hours and you can sip it slowly :)

Also having air circulating with the fan will stop any mosquitoes that do manage to get in from attacking you as they like calm air.
