I don't need to talk about the world alright I just want to sleep with a smile tonight I don't want to talk about the hungry people People down and out Sleep when the sun goes down When I wake up early in the morning I don't watch the news I just wake up with a smile by you And I don't want to talk about the world I just want to smile and smile some more We watched the sun come up But take it down, to hide it Seems like the spring has come and gone Felt like forever I don't want to talk about the world alright I just want to sleep with a smile tonight I don't want to talk about the hungry people People down and out Sleep when the sun goes down When I wake up early in the morning I don't watch the news I just get up with a smile by you And I don't want to talk about the world I just want to smile and smile some more And I feel fine I feel good That's what happy people do, and how are you? When I feel fine I feel good That's what happy people do, and how are you? Let's watch the sun come up To take it down, and hide it Seems like the spring has come and gone It felt like forever We'll watch the sun come up To take it down, and hide it It seems like the spring has come and gone It felt like forever Until the summer comes then, you'll find me there I'd like to try to forget the times Have changed and we all live and die Plastic soldiers Never growing older I'd like to try to forget the times Have changed and we all live and die Plastic soldiers Slowly growing older I'd like to try to forget the times Have changed and we all live and die Plastic soldiers Slowly growing older And I'm sorry for the love you lost today But I thank you for the love I need today I'm sorry for the love you lost today But I thank you for the love I need today I'm sorry for the love you lost today But I thank you for the love I need today I'm sorry for the love you lost today But I thank you for the love I need today I'm sorry for the love you lost today But I thank you for the love I need today

This song is amazing and sublime: I love how they re-use the motif in "Plastic Soldiers" at 1:25 and then reference the song again at 3:17: "I'd like to try to forget that times have changed and we all live and die; Plastic Soldiers never growin' older!" "I'd like to try and forget that times have changed and we all live and die; Plastic Soldiers slowly growin' older" This admission of non-permanence and the recognition that sometimes we selfishly just don't want to think about the "hungry people, people down and out" are a brilliant contrast to the opener (Plastic Soldiers) where it is more optimistically (perhaps naively) remarked that, "Everything stays the same - and we are all together!" Excellent stuff!

The perfect satire. A perfect understanding of the apathy of our times. This song drives it all home, all the anthems you were singing before -- "I just (evil) wanna be evil -- all I ever needed was something to believe in" -- shattered by being forced to think about the all those hungry people. But we don't want to. It's that apathy. It's pervasive even in us, our friends, our loved ones. We are all evil in the most sinister of ways, the ways that are less than conscious, self-subversive.

And there's a Beatles' reference too,if you pay attention he sings "when I wake up early in the morning" from "I'm only sleeping".He also does something similiar in "Someday believers" when he sings "everybody's got something to hide" and in "Everything You See (Kids Count Hallelujahs)" from In The Mountain In The Cloud you can find the line "all the kids are the rubber souls" which is a sweet tribute to the genius.I mean,Portugal. The Man is truly outstanding.P.S:Sorry for my English

I always look forward to final tracks on Portugal's albums. Mornings was so soulful. When the War Ends was a curve ball, but really made American Ghetto, and it was a for-runner to Evil Friends. Sleep Forever was very dynamic and summarized all of In the Mountain In the Cloud. But this song has so much beauty in it and is so dynamic and is in my opinion worth the extra year of waiting. Thank You.

What I love about this song are the two throwbacks . 1) if you listen to the chorus, those lyrics are from the song Senseless from their previous album In the Mountain in the Cloud just mellowed out. 2) the end of the song is a throwback to the first song, plastic soldiers thus completing the album in a full circle.

This song is the centerpiece of my theory that this album is about the Old Gods of a land besieged by New Gods, American Gods Style. The New Gods and their adherents have destroyed all but two remaining Old Gods. This song is about them, the last remaining and Chief God and his Wife/Counterpart/Goddess making the choice to sacrifice themselves as a last ditch effort for the sake of the humans still faithful to them and the remaining demi-god children First verse is the night before the final event, where he admits he’s tired “I don’t want to talk about the world alright I just want to sleep with a smile tonight” Then they reminisce of their adventures including hiding the sun after it refused to set and was burning the land “Let’s watch the sun come up to take it down and hide it. Seems like the spring is coming on it felt like forever Until the summer comes and you’ll find me there. “ Then a realization of the only remaining path and a lamentation of their lost immortality “I like to try to forget that times have changed and we all live and die Like plastic soldiers slowly growing older” Finally, they reach out with their senses for the prayers of adherents that still thank them for the world they created, a mother whose husband is murdered by the Penitents of the New Gods the same night their third child is born. He dies fighting off their effort to prevent the birth of the first child in a decade of strife and war. A prayer of hope in a moment of true sorrow. “I’m sorry for the love you lost today, but I thank you for the love I need today” A fitting sacrifice, a flash of light, all is silence, and we see a small twinkle in the eye of the child, as plastic soldiers starts playing and the cycle starts anew.

You know, I never understood this song until now. But last week a bus here crashed and took the lives of 15 people, and today on my news feed I saw a post of animal abuse and it got me thinking about all the evil in the world like never before. I looked at my cat, I looked at my sister, I unfollowed the page with the animal abuse post. I thought to myself, what if I can't protect all the people and things that I love from hurt and evil? And then I wanted that thought to disappear. So I thought of this. And here I am.

The whole album is very thematic. I recommend listening to the whole album in one sitting if any of you haven't yet. I noticed a LOT of parallels between songs I hadn't noticed listening to them separately Also the whistling at the beginning is the melody from purple, yellow, red and blue I think.
