Hi Liz! I just recently started learning European Portuguese this week and my friends from Portugal have already noted how "off" the translations were coming from Google Translate and other translators. I really quickly found out that most translators only provide Brazilian Portuguese, so I went on the hunt. I found DeepL right before finding this video and REALLY like that not only can you choose PT-PT, but informal/formal. Really cool. I'm currently trying this out, and I also found that iTranslate has the ability to choose European Portuguese, and also seems informal (which I prefer). Have you tried that one out before? I'm comparing them this week to see which works better for me. I'm SO glad I found your channel at the beginning of this journey to learn Portuguese and I absolutely love your videos. Thank you so much for all the time you put in to help people learn! Cheers

This is the holy KZbin channel I have been waiting for!!! I am actually portuguese but I moved to london when I was 1 so I never got to learn like a native. In fact, I didn’t start learning Portuguese till around a year ago even though I’m already 18. I’ve always been able to understand portuguese but i could only really speak the basics and my pronunciation was horrible. I’ve definitely improved loads since I’ve made loads of friends back in portugal and we speak everyday however Im lacking too things. Perfect grammar and over just sounded like someone who’s confident in the speaking. I’ve been watching your videos and it’s been helping me loads my friends and family even started to notice the difference so I wanted to thank you for that. Most people say my portuguese is 8/10 only because of my grammar and pronunciation of some words for example “dormir” or “português” (mostly the words with strong Rs) so the grind won’t stop🔥

Both "cachorro" and "cão" are proper Portuguese words. It is just that in Portugal the latter is more often used than the former, whilst in Brazil, it is the other way around. Just as in English some may use the word "dog" while others may prefer to use "hound" instead. PS: The "joke" you heard from that driver in the Algarve doesn't make any sense even for a native Portuguese speaker!

Awesome! So many language resources simply say “Portuguese” and don’t indicate European vs. Brazilian. I tried DeepL vs. Google Translate on a short paragraph from a Portuguese news site. Here are the results; judge for yourself (neither is really what a native English speaker would say). I’m not entirely sure what “duty of collection” or “duty of recollection” really means, but I guess it refers to laws against gathering in groups, due to COVID restrictions. Portuguese Text: A GNR interrompeu, na madrugada de esta terça-feira, uma festa ilegal que juntava 19 jovens numa moradia em Gondifelos, Vila Nova de Famalicão, em violação do dever geral de recolhimento, disse fonte daquela força à Lusa. Segundo, a fonte, os jovens transformaram a moradia "numa espécie de discoteca". I have just tried out the Lingee Translator and I am so impressed. I have been using Google Translate but try to write in Portuguese first and then translate into English to check if my Portuguese actually made sense. Where the English translation is 'off', I have to justify the Portuguese I used (good revision of grammar and idiomatic use of Portuguese) and if I can't I have to rephrase my Portuguese!!! This is due to the Google Translate being somewhat hit and miss in its translations. Lingee appears so much tighter in its translations but of course you need to double check everything, just in case. I love how you can drop a whole document into the translator and then download the translated version. As we run an Alojamento Local in the Algarve, I find I write a lot of documents in Portuguese and it is going to save me so much time to compare my version with the Lingee version. Thank you for passing on this tip.
