Im part Filipino and my grandmother told me stories of her father and grandfather that worked with Spanish businessmen and they spoke Spanish and chavocano and how often they'd travel to Mexico and California. Sadly she barely remembers how to speak chavocano and she didn't pass it on to her children. This was actually the first time I heard chavocano and its so beautiful to see how well its understood to someone who's fluent in Brazilian Portuguese!

I'm from Madrid, Spain and I can perfectly understand written Portuguese. Spoken Iberian (Portugal) Portuguese can be hard to understand because they don't pronounce all the vowels.Brazilian Portuguse is like honey to my ears, it sounds so beautiful! they pronounce more vowels, it is definitely easier to understand. As for chavacano, I was able to understand around 90-95%, at least what was discussed in this video, the only thing is that many words, sentence structure sounds different but they are understandable.

probably because chavacano sometimes follow the VSO sentence structure of tagalog and other austronesian languages such as hawaiian, but unlike tagalog chavacano sentences cannot be turned into SVO situationaly

There are many variations of Spanish around Latin America, there's accents in every country, also many regional and local slangs but it's all Spanish, to me Chavanco is simply Filipino Spanish since Hispanohablantes can understand it. Some of my Mexican relatives understand almost all of it and they have a hard time understanding Argentinians and Dominicans 😂

Porque para mi concepto el chavacano parece más fácil de entender que el portugués de BR para una persona hispana que no habla portugués (en mi caso yo sí entiendo portugués bastante). Creo que es porque aunque pronuncian las palabras diferentes (más similares al portugués de hecho) el acento del dialecto chavacano suena más fácil de entender que el acento de Brasil para nosotros los hispanohablantes.

Try Tetum and Portuguese... Tetum is the language of Timor-Leste. The language is more likely to be understood by a Portuguese speaker. I think Timor-Leste's Tetum is more preserve than the Philippines' Chavacano. However, Timor-Leste is kind of unknown to world unlike the Philippines that is popular.

I'd say the main reason Chavacano or even Spanish speakers have a hard time understanding Portuguese is because of the very different pronunciation. It's like a French speaker can understand mostly what an Italian person says but the Italian speaker have a hard time understanding the French.

I'm Italian and I understand both French and Spanish,but for us Italians Spanish is easier to speak and understand than French.I understand Brazilian Portuguese.In a few words Italian is my first language after American English.Though Italian and Spanish are 'sisters languages' it's easier to make a lot of mistakes in Spanish rather than in English 'cause some words have a completely different meaning though they're written and pronounced in the same way both in Italian and in Spanish. An example is burro that means butter in Italian and donkey in Spanish

I am Filipino-American. Born and raised in Negros island. We grow up speaking both spanish and Portuguese . Not Portunol. haha. Either straight spanish or Portuguese. My grandfather is half Portuguese and spanish and my grandmother is 3/4 spanish and Filipino. This was in my dad side. Mother side is all filipino. Travelled to Portugal a lot and Brasil. No problem with communication. Great video.

Chavacano and Portuguese use the contraction NA that means IN THE for feminine nouns. Chavacano does not follow a very rigid rule on gender unlike Romance Languages (🇵🇭: El mujer, 🇧🇷 : a mulher, 🇪🇸 : la mujer). They both said: CHAVACANO : NA CIUDAD PORTUGUESE : NA CIDADE And kids back home still want to learn 🇰🇷🥢😂

The “Na” in Chavacano de Zamboanga most probably comes from Cebuano. It just happens to mean the same-ish thing. Just like “Mucho” and “much” mean the same thing but they are not cognates. It’s just a coincidence. Much is rooted in a Germanic word and mucho is rooted in a Latin word from which “muito” and “molto” come. In Spanish, “na” is “en la.” So unless Chavacano is using an older type of Spanish that uses “no” and “na” it probably comes from Cebuano or another Visayan language.

@@toiletholder The Spanish language of the early colonial period is not the modern Spanish language that we have now.. thanks to Cervantes. The proximity of Tidore and Ternate to Mindanao can explain such contraction because Tidore and Ternate were passed on back and forth to the Spanish and Portuguese until the islands finally fell to the VOC. The people of these islands fled with the Spaniards to the Philippines and settled in Cavite & Zamboanga.. Formal institutions were yet to be established in the early days of colonial settlement. There were no formal training to learn languages. It’s for sure a monkey do-monkey say way of understanding each other. I could be wrong or whatever read it in one of Isaac Donoso’s works.

Chavacano has some portuguese in it (the guy Ricardo even said it sounded like Portuguese) because of the mixed ship crew before --being Spanish and Portuguese. These are the ships in the 1600s that were based in Cavite and subsequently went to Zamboanga City to counter the local pirates. The fort that they've built then still exists today, Fort Pilar.

While Spanish and Portuguese are almost identicaly understandable between speakers, Portuguese has a distinct and diverse language development from Castillian Spanish and all the other Spanish varieties. There are some false friends that could put Spanish and Portusuese speakers into trouble when they speak in each other's speakers (i.e. Spanish speaking Spanish to Portuguese speakers, and vice versa), so using English might be a safer option. Nevertheless, Chavacano and Potuguese are fun to listen, given their unique Latin roots.

If a Spanish person wants to learn Portuguese, or vice versa, it's their choice. as a chavacano and spanish speaker, i dont speak portuguese but when i had brazilian co-workers and finally understood how they pronounce words, i can confidently say that i understand most of what they say. surprisingly, there are some prepositions and pronounciation in chavacano that are more similar to portuguese than spanish. for example, we use na, desse, desuyo, similar to the prepositions in portuguese. words like guisado, tomado etc are pronounced guisao, tomao etc just like portuguese. additionally, there are some small groups of chavacano-speakers in zamboanga that speaks chavacano with accents similar to the portuguese. its crazy

To me Chavacano is just normal Filipino Spanish with an accent with a few local native words same as in Mexico with Aztec/Nahuatl words, or any part of Latin American with infused native words but I've heard Formal Chavacano is simply Mexican/Galician Spanish from the 16th century.

I've read somewhere that from a native Spanish speaker's perspective, Chavacano more likely sounded/originated from old castillan spanish with a mix of mexican spanish, well considering Philippines was colonized by Spain in the 1500s up until the late 1800s through the vice royalty of Spain which is Mexico today, its no wonder they sound like a mix of the two native languages, whereas the national language of the Philippines during the Spanish Era is mainly Castillan spanish it is mainly because the majority of the priests who went in the Philippines came from the mainland Spain, their main goal during that time is to spread Catholicism and teach the spanish language.

With almost a million residents, Zamboanga City speaks mostly Chavacano. Almost half a million, i think. In the Philippines, I am surprised I have neighbors who speak Chavacano in a Region where Chavacano isn't even known, sort of. Those neighbors are not acquaintances but they all came from Zamboanga, so am I. 😁

The explanation is very simple, explained by linguists a while back... Portugue is the BROADER spectrum of the Low Latin Language from Rome. So as a BROADER spectrum, it will contain every single other sound or muscle flex of the SHORTER spectrums. You can understand this as Portuguese is the base of the pyramid. Spanish, Italian, and others come as a smaller layer on top, so they will contain a short version of those sounds and tongue muscles movements. Meaning: Portuguese speakers have a much easier time understanding everything else than the other way around. Spanish and Italian will not understand Portuguese as much.

well in reality portuguese speakers understand spanish speakers better more than spanish speakers understand portuguese speakers. since chavacano came from a mix spanish and filipino languages it makes sense

pretty much the same based on my first hand experience. chavacano speakers are having difficult time understanding spanish, maybe only about 30% to 40% but most spanish-speakers understand chavacano probably around 70% of the time.

Whether they're Mexican, Colombian, Salvadoran, etc. most of them, if not all, say that Chavacano sounds a lot like Portuguese or a Portuguese person trying to speak in Spanish.

The Philipinos are lucky. I was adopted from Thailand by Swedish parents when I was 6 weeks old, and finding that learning Thai seems daunting. At least her language is more similar to a European language

Spanish subject once part in the academic curriculum here in the Philippines back in 2002 until it was remove then. Hopefully they will put it back as a requirement as part of the subject aside from english

I'd say for the most part they understand each other mainly because of some context clues. But I noticed one misunderstanding, Dearly was telling Ricardo that her husband is studying in Utah but Ricardo took it to mean that Dearly is studying in Utah. But overall, this is a fun interaction. 😊

There's also a language in the Philippines called Cebuano. The older version of it which my grandfather and dad spoke has many Castillian words in it. I've also learned the language growing up and during my first visit to Mexico, I was able to communicate with locals in a form of short and broken sentences. Since I've been traveling quite often to Latin America, my Spanish is getting better. I could also understand some Portugues if they speaks clearly and slowly. I can't wait to traveling to Brazil soon ish.

I dont speak Chavacano but I grew up speaking Cebuano and have since learned European Portuguese and my knowledge of Cebuano and Portuguese made me understand Chavacano haha.

My Mom she's Chavacano but not fluent speaking the language, and she did told me that Chavacano language started originally in Cavite, they mix Tagalog and Spanish and portuguese.but it's true that there's not very many people in Cavite speak Chavacano anymore.

How about a comparison between Portuguese and Kristang? Kristang is a Portuguese creole spoken in Malacca, Malaysia from the time the Portuguese came in 1511. Many Eurasians in Malaysia still speak it.

Actually the Other Chavacano Language that the other Girl Mentioned In Cavite had more Portuguese than Spanish. Because Ternate, Cavite is named after Ternate which is a Territory of Portuguese near Malacca. And when it fall I guess to the Dutch, a Lot of Portuguese settled in Cavite and they named the Town, TERNATE their former homeland. It's also had a Tagalog Influence which is the language of Natives in Cavite. Than Visayan which is the language of the native in Zamboanga.

from my southern Southamerican Spanish I could understand about 95% of Chavacano, it is not the first time I hear it though, I have also heard the Filipino creole from Cavite, Bohol and Visayas, but definitively Zamboanga`s Chavacano is the closest to Spanish (Mexican Spanish base!) For our Brazilian friend: he could try to expose himself to crioulo portugues from Goa, Diu, and Damão, Macaense Chinese, or try his luck with Malaccan Kristang! (before the arrival of English, Portuguese Creole (Pidgin) was the Lingua Franca for doing Business in a big region of Asia...) and for the Filipinos: you should never give up Spanish, because with it and English you are already mastering 2 so called "world languages" which together sum up as many as chinese speakers and are understood in a very big chunk of the world! a BIG asset!

Agora que estou aprendendo o português brasileiro, aprendi que existem palavras em filipino que são portuguesas. Por exemplo, “skirt” é saia (saya em filipino). Também usamos a palavra espanhola falda, mas para saia longa é saya. Existem outras palavras como sorvete e chá que são iguais em português.

WOW! I lived in Cavite City for 35 years and i believed Chavacano originate in these 2 cities Zamboanga City and Cavite City but differ in some words but never though of mixed Portuguese language. i am very impressed! at first i thought Chavacano was a messed up Spanish in the Spanish era as a diversion so Spaniards would not recognize their plot, but never thought it was more of Portuguese language.
