It is unintuitive and arguable, but I see the reasoning behind SonicBoom not being sound-based. Sound-based moves appear to all be effects caused directly by sound the Pokemon produces, i.e. Sing is a lullaby that causes the opponent to sleep. A sonic boom *is* a sound, but it's the sound of a shock wave caused by motion at super-sonic speeds. A lot of the time when people say "sonic boom" they are referring to the shock wave and not the sound. Voltorb isn't producing a sound directly, it's just moving so fast that the shock wave it creates damages its opponent. Soundproof doesn't block it because it's not the sound that damages Porygon. It's the shock wave, the super-sonic motion, that damages Porygon. ...I think?

Boomburst exists though I think Sonic Boom not being sound is actually a miss
@135forte2 ай бұрын
I think you are giving GF too much credit.
@Rizaidym2 ай бұрын
I think it comes down to the description of the move. Boomburst specifically states that the opponent is attacked with "terrible, explosive sound," while Sonic Boom's description has never used the word "sound" once. It's always been described as a shock wave. Essentially, the only thing pointing to sound is Sonic Boom's name, which rarely refers to a sound itself; sonicboom refers to the act of breaking the sound barrier, which produces a loud noise as a byproduct. All of which is to say: I feel that Sonic Boom as a sound-based move and Sonic Boom as a non-sound-based move are equally intuitive.
@sashasscribbles2 ай бұрын
Well... sound is a wave of energy travelling through a medium, a shock wave is the same thing just a lot more intense; the distinction between them is magnitude so I think it should count as sound based personally

10:10 for normal types with psychic and fighting coverage: the Jigglypuff and Clefairy lines get both psychic and brick break starting in Gen 3, as do Spinda, Snorlax, and Togetic. And the Blissey line, but brick break isn’t going to do much of anything for her. Togekiss in gen 4 also gets Aura Sphere by move relearner, and interestingly has Extrasensory by default only from the Togepi egg in HGSS.

I’ve always loved porygon! I remember trying so hard to make this thing work after I grinded the money to buy the coins for so long in blue version. Fun fact in RBY competitive porygon has a niche as a great body slam switch in to all non-amnesia snorlax sets and is one of the very few pokemon that can beat it 1v1 reliably and force it to use self destruct.
@Flaming_Rok2 ай бұрын
It does not BEAT Snorlax 1v1 because Porygon doesn't really do anything in return to Snorlax, but it forces the Snorlax user into an awkward situation where they either have to stay in and waste Body Slams and eventually Rest from chip damage, or swap and risk a teammate being paralyzed. It's a good check to Snorlax, but it is not a counter.

My favourite hyper specific porygon tech is in the Leaf green nuzlocke hack Garbage Green, which, in addition to making you use trash pokemon, nerfs the broken moves. In particular, all setip mobes have 1 pp. However, porygon gets sharpen and /recycle/, which with a leppa berry is one of the only ways to reach +6 attack. The result is that, with some support, you can sweep lorelei setting up on cloyster, agatha setting up on gengar with switch stalling and a steel type and i wanna say theres some niche vs lance as well

Another interesting thing to consider: are there any gym leaders, Elite Four members, champions, or other major characters with a Porygon or its evolutions? I can’t think of any, though I’m not very knowledge about Gen 5 and beyond. The video game team could’ve chosen to force the issue regarding the anime’s avoidance of Porygon by having a very important trainer have a Porygon or one of its evolutions, but Porygon never reappeared after the infamous episode it debuted in.
@mmcthrowАй бұрын
@@SnailShoes My understanding based on what I’ve read from Takeshi Shudo and other people involved with the anime at the time is that the staff of the anime felt very badly about the incident to the point that feelings were still raw years after the incident. Perhaps the reason Porygon never reappeared and why its evolutions never appeared has less to do with blaming Porygon for the incident and more to do with the anime staff not wanting to be reminded of the incident, kind of like Brock’s feelings about Professor Ivy….”Don’t mention that name!”

Regarding pure Normal types with Psychic + Fighting coverage, when you eventually do Spinda in Platinum, Spinda can learn Drain Punch via TM from Maylene and learns Psybeam via level up. For even more perfect coverage, it learns Sucker Punch via level up as well to hit Ghost types. If playing in Emerald, Spinda learns Brick Break via TM as well (a bit later in the game is not as cool). A lot of Normal types can do this in Generation 9 as well, but its cool to see such a terrible pokemon have a genuine underrated niche in solo playthroughs.

The laymans definition of sonic is “sound” But sound is just variations in pressure moving through a medium. A “sonic boom” is when said pressure goes beyond a certain threshold-or the speed of sound in whatever medium the pressure waves are propagating through. Yes. A sonic boom is loud but if you took your research a step further and looked up the scientific definition of “sound” also, you would find that “sound” is simply variations in pressure. “Sonic booms” in real life however, only happen when a physical object moves faster that the speed of sound through air. SOUND CANNOT TRAVEL FASTER THAN SOUND therefore, a sonic boom is not a “sound” It’s the pressure wave caused by a physical moving faster than sound. More akin to an explosive force than actual sound.

I think it'd be worth adding a rule for having additional pokemon in your party for major battles. If the battle is being influenced by other pokemon being in your party, then I feel that slightly reduces the solo-ness of the run. This obviously will lead to a beneficial impact in the form of not being able to be phased out. But, there are other examples which will become apparent. I solo run ORAS and in the champion battle against Steven, its Skarmory knows Spikes. If you have team members, Steven has a good chance of choosing Spikes, potentially giving you the time to set up. However, without them, he'll literally never choose Spikes. I play with all members removed from my party for this reason, as it stops set up Pokemon from getting an unfair advantage.

Against the elite-4, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic are the "holy trinity". These 3 moves are super-effective against almost the entire league, with the exceptions of Jynx, Alakazam, and Arcanine. Porygon doesn't get Calm Mind to boost these moves, but it does get Recover and adequate SAt and defenses, making its success in the league pretty trivial. These moves tend to be great throughout the midgame to endgame too, though a STAB normal move against Sabrina and something else against Blaine is nice.

If youre at +2 attack against the Pidgeot, then you can go to +3 unless the AI predicts you will go for another set up move. this is because Whirlwind has a priority of -6. So a battle might go like this: Turn1: Pidgeot attacks, then Porygon uses Sharpen. Turn2: Pidgeot attacks, Then Porygon sets up Sharpen again Turn3: Unless the AI predicts another Sharpen here and uses Whirlwind, youre safe. Porygon uses Sharpen again for +3 Turn4: AI sees youre at +3, and tries Whirlwind. Because Whirlwind is -6 priority, you move first and KO them before they can use Whirlwind. Also you deposited your other team members already anyways, so Whirlwind would have failed regardless.

Honestly, with the soundproof ability, it should more ignore status effects of sound based moves instead of a full ignore. The shockwave of a sonic boom is that the molecules cannot compress anymore that they all become one wave, and with how sine waves work...well energy is weird...so think of a ship getting nailed by a rogue wave. I could go into more in how sound-waves work, but the boom is more of a Decibel than a Hertz withing the hearing spectrum. You'd definitely feel it, sonic booms can do structural damage after all. That said, with Boom Burst existing...and just how games define "sonic" damage in general...one could argue that that you'd still be getting hit by a giant, condensed wave of atmosphere and should still take damage. Personally, I would think "sonic" damage would be the ones that give you naseua and confusion and discomfort. Much like how our current development of sonic weapons that exists do. Overall...sound is weird...energy is weird...it's weird. Pokemon are weird.

Soundproof doesn't make you imune to Sonic Boom because Sonic Boom hits you with the shock wave, not the sound itself. Sonic Boom's description: "The target is hit with a destructive shock wave that always inflicts 20 HP damage." In comparison, a move like Boomburst used the sound itself to deal damage: "The user attacks everything around it with the destructive power of a terrible, explosive sound."

Sounds are basically shockwaves though
@KakoriGames2 ай бұрын
@@tesladrew2608 Yes, but the idea is that "sound moves" work be reaching your eardrums, while a powerful enough shock wave can damage you regardless if you can hear it or not. At least that's the in-game logic for it.

Now, I can't wait for Scott to get more deep into Gen. 4 with this Mon. Eviolite Porygon slaps in Platinum as a playthrough Mon. It is one of my favorite Mons in any generation. Idk if Scott will consider Eviolite, but I do know it gives absurd bulk to so many Mons, so I'd imagine Scott will eventually gravitate towards it as he gets into Pre-Evos in Plat.

Isn't Eviolite introduced in Gen 5?
@iskander07252 ай бұрын
@@kevh6303 was it? I swear it was Gen. 4. I had the thought though, so lemme fact check myself. And, it was, and I am sad. Been at this Pokemon thing so long, some items are just Mandela Effected to be Gen. 4 in my brain for some reason.

Lopunny gets Zen Headbutt and High Jump Kick, I'm not sure in which gen tho but that combo absolutely crushed teams back in Gen 7 when I could Mega. Probably my favorite mega form, tied with Mawile's

Isn't Sonic Boom a fixed damage move? I feel like those moves always have odd interactions--like Night Shade being able to hit Normal and Psychic types in Gen 1.
