I have the Redwood with BOTH the 650B and 700 wheels. The performance is night and day better with narrower tires and larger diameter wheels. In fact, I just completed a competitive 55 mile gravel grinder with 700 x 40c tires. I save the 650B for LOADED touring. For fun mixed gravel and road rides, I prefer the 700 tires all the time. Note: the stock 650B tires are NOT tubeless compatible! Poseidon cheaped out here, so you need to buy new tires before converting to tubeless. During the conversion process, true the wheels and you will have a great set-up.

If you buy the "accessory" 700c wheels from Poseidon, it's important to know that NOTHING else is included with the bare wheels! You need to buy brake rotors, cassette, and tires/tubes - or the parts for a tubeless conversion.

I went another route and setup my size XL Redwood as a Mullet build with 29" wheel front and 27.5" at the rear. I switched from clipless over to flat pedals and haven't yet had any overlap issues. I'm a fairly tall rider at 6'3" and size 13 foot. The Redwood frame works great with the mixed sizing for a wide variety of applications.

Yes. I'm 6'3" and was around 260 when I first got my XL Redwood. I tried both the Large and XL and they are worlds apart for those above 6' tall. You may need to upgrade the wheels. Look for sales and enduro wheels.

Thinking of getting the Redwood flat bar - in your opinion, would 29x2.3 fit both front/rear?
@OHJLM
@OHJLM Жыл бұрын
@@globaljet8420 Maybe? I'm running Teravail Ehline tires in the 2.3 width at F/R. Running 29x2.3 at the rear might be tight depending on the tread pattern. While you can go down to a narrower width, I wouldn't recommend going below 2.3 if you are planning on a 30mm internal width rim/wheel. If you are looking at 29 inch wheel sets, the new Hope Fortus 26 or 30 pro 5 are worth a look. The 26 inch internal width would allow you to go to a narrow 2.0-2.25 width tire with no issue. Also, consider working with a local bike shop who will allow you to try out different wheels first. You may also find that you will need to add a wider handlebar or change out the stem. - Good luck!

Well, the Redwood owner community (it feels like a "community", so many people seem to love the bike because if its upgradeability) has finally convinced me to give it a go. A few more days until mine arrives. Cannot wait for its maiden voyage. Cannot wait to ditch my 37 pound boat anchor mountain bike. I plan to use it for some epic bikepacking trips and races, with the occasional lical gravel ride or race. In either role, I think I will need to do some serious upgrading because it is too heavy in stock form. Still, it is a great option just to get riding out of the box, for a great price. The Pipedream A.L.I.C.E. was my runner-up for budget build as I much prefer the geometry (I wish the stack was higher on the Redwood which seems more in line with what this bike is really meant for - its clearly not a race gravel bike, so why the agressive low stack), but after doing the math, I realized the Pipedream would cost me $3500-plus to build up the bike with Ekar) despite the frame and fork being a great price. Thats no longer a budget build at that point. The new Mason Exposure (among a long list of titanium bikes) may end up being my dream build..... but for now, Redwood it is. Excited.

So true about TOE OVERLAP I have a few wheel sets on my gravel bike and mix a few 700c tires sizing from 38 to 50.One set is the Mtn rims Velocity Blunt SS the other is Gravel , the XPLR rims. Anyway the bigger than 43c width is going to overlap but the 40c (what I use the most) are fine. I have never ever hit my toes while riding and it’s only noticeable when I stop and turn my handle bars to the side. As we all know, you’re steering with lean and knees. I can’t think of any situation where toe overlap would effect anything.
@DaveCM

I bought a new gravel bike because I got tired of toe overlap. The vast majority of the time, it isn't an issue. On slow and sharp turns, I programmed myself to not have my feet level. But, I would still hit on slow, sharp turns when I had to pedal. It's almost caused me to crash a few times. I will never buy another bike with toe overlap. I've had that bike for about 6 years.

Toe overlap is a deal breaker for me. I've had a bike for about 6 years that has toe overlap. It was a little bad with a 38c tire and horrible with a 42c. As you said, it wasn't noticeable the majority of the time. It was an issue on slow, sharp turns. I programmed myself to not have my feet level to avoid it. But, I can't avoid it if I have to pedal. Like on an uphill, slow turn. I've almost crashed a few times. There is a trail I absolutely hate because it is impossible not to hit my toes at least several times. I now have a new gravel bike. It is so much nicer to not worry about toe overlap. Why in the world would they design a bike like that and have toe overlap? My new bike is a Cannondale SuperSix SE. It is literally a full on race bike, and it has no toe overlap at all.
@kyuseokim988

I agree with you here... Cleaning steep switchback climbs brings the greatest sense of achievement for me. Going from 700c to 650b eliminated the toe overlap and let me focus my balance, grip, and power on my gravel bike.

Well, just received my Redwood and took it for a good off-road test ride. First decision was I will definitely be getting a set of semi wide (internal) 700c wheels. I am definitely keeping the stock 27.5 wheelset and Kenda tires (which I think are too wide for most applications), but felt the smaller rim size partly contributed to the slower top end speed (aside from higher rolling resistance of 2.3 tires). For rougher bikepacking, the 650c / 27.5 is the choice, but if I do gravel rides with groups, I definitely would not be able to keep up. 700c with 48c tires seems the way to go if you are used to averaging over 20mph. I think 45c to 48c is the goldilox for this bike. Still capable on rougher terrain, but just fast enough to keep up with guys on their fancy carbon gravel bikes. Bought size large. I am 5'10" with average sized leg and torso length, and thought the fit was great (as per Poseidons sizing chart). Wish the top tube sloped a tad more so I could get more seatpost flex (also some guys also say its too high because they have standover issues). Poseidon should do a bigger stack with a slightly shorter seat tube on their next iteration. Bike is a tank. Thats good for extreme bikepacking, but I will be following others lead and lightening the bike up. Did feel I was working a bit harder than I wanted to due to the weight. I predict I will be happy with my purchase.

Specs of that wheelset says more CX or endurance road bike than anything else. If I really wanted 700c wheels on the redwood i19 is a bit too narrow. I would want at least i23 if I wanted to run a 50mm wide tire cause I'd like to ride lower pressure. I'd rather do the extra work for a better bang for the buck wheelset at the same price.

yes, with 700c wheels and fast rolling tires, redwood is faster. I have 2 sets, original heavy 650b stock rims and light hunt 4 season 25 internal width with 700x44 byways. I use 700c for road riding, mellow gravel and commute, 650b I use for snow, mud, riding with 2,8 tires.
@JDP8888
@JDP8888 2 жыл бұрын
@@vmxd I have been looking into the redwood because it is almost a do it all bike. It is only a matter of switching between wheelsets. As you mentioned, with the 700c you can commute and ride light trails. Then switch back to the stock 650b wheelset for more rough and rugged terrain. I am still in a mixed bag between the X or the Redwood just because I like to ride long distances. I also really like the the fact that you get more out of the box with the Redwood. The X as advertised is a road/gravel bike but it is basically just like any other hybrid bike out there in the market. How much a height difference is there between the 650s and 700 wheels i.e. .5 inch or 1 inch difference in ride height? How is the bike on long rides such as 50+ miles?
@TheBikeSauce
@TheBikeSauce 2 жыл бұрын
Diameter itself isn’t as important as the type of tire. But I’m kore inclined to put on a fast rolling tire on a 700c set, while my 650b wheels usually get knobbies. Doesn’t have to be this way though as you have pointed out
@vmxd
@vmxd 2 жыл бұрын
@@JDP8888 I ride 45-50 miles on mixed terrain, pavement and gravel with hunt all season rims and byway 44 tires. I like more MTB, but when trails are wet or snowy, I ride my Redwood to keep my legs in shape for summer MTB season. By any means this is not light and fast road bike (in stock form), but as a bike which is like a real Swiss knife aka can do it all - I love it. With my setup and carbon fork and hunt wheels - it weights 17.8 LBS with pedals, for the winter I put back original heavy fork and wide wheels 2.8 and it is snow tank. watch my videos, you will see my different setups. I've never measured height difference with 650b and 700c, I am 5.11 \ 210 lbs never had any issues with size L. I hope it helps.

@@vmxd thank you for replying it is much appreciated. Everyone I have asked in regards the change in ride height or stand over height in general is always 5’10 or taller. I guess short guys aren’t meant for the world of cycling 😂. I am leaning towards the Redwood just because it offers smaller frames in that regard. Your feedback will be taken into consideration.
