Hello Mr Hyce, CDO of ES&DT You currently have an outstanding debt of 4,751,962.73 USD. That is the equivalent of 2,375,981 ES&DP (ES&D Packing peanuts). However, I cannot take any railroad credits. As such you need to pay in USD, gold, silver, or other precious metals. For your swear jar, I have counted 2 swears this video. You and the rest of this railroad need to put in an additional 6 USD or the equivalent amount in other currencies. Any IOUs put it will have some sort of collateral also written on alongside the note. For example: IOU ### USD Collateral: my car The total amount of money in the swear jar is the equivalent of 0 USD. As a reminder, the swear jar money will collect interest, and it will be used to buy coal for Montezuma once she is completed. The swear jar will stay in my possession as to ensure that no one tries to steal from it or short change it. Hyce, my good bird, on the livestream I knocked off two million dollars. In the time of two episodes you got two million and then some in debt. If you can't pay it off, you can work it off on my railroad. Railroader Debt Collector, John Doe

I've loved seeing you do all the different jobs around the railroad, but I'd love to see you do the Whittier Switching job, cause I've noticed that the eastbound freight train always gets there before the Whittier switcher does their damn job. I hink you could do that, show us how it looks, and do it before the freight gets to Whittier.

*I'm standing next to a huge wEEwEE-* Still yet to get that production rate mod for Robinson yea-? Hungarian State Railways used "cab control cars" with steam locomotives since 1962 (steam stayed in service till 1984). Note that the cars had brake and whistle control and a lever to shut the throttle of the steamer, so to open the throttle and manage everything on the locomotive a second assisting engineer had to be placed on the locomotive. shipping still only works within the US does it-

I've occasionally pondered the thought of taking a shoving platform (usually an old caboose) and putting radio controls for an engine in the cupola. I know there's a few shortlines, like Meeker Southern, that put horns and even ditch lights on their caboose, but for short enough trains would putting engine controls on them be worthwhile? Sorry to hear you got so many annoying comments about the etymology of "train", but don't let that bug you...because bugs are covered by entomology, not etymology. 😛

You can do the sawmill at tier five all from Connelly with three trips up the hill. L2 L3 L2 one day, L3 L2 L3 the other. Empties to one spur up, logs from the other spur down each time. Over two days thats three trips to each spur, (7+8)*2=45. That leaves you with three pickups from L1 to make along the way to get to 60, which you can do with a single string of cars. So thats one engine, twenty cars, three trips a day. With the K-28 that's a single refuel, including switching out the sawmill and pulling down all the pulpwood for sylva at tier 5 and spotting it at East Whitts yard. A sixteen car train every day, plus one eight car train every other day.

As a fellow counter-thrust enjoyer I have to wonder.... just how BAD would it be to run a real locomotive like this? E.g. you're going down a hill at like 15 mph and instead of using brakes, you use the steam engine to push against the train? Let's just assume there are snifters and we're not sucking the "nice" stack fumes through our valves and cylinders.
@Hyce77727 күн бұрын
It was standard practice on mountain grades when running light to do such, but with the bar *barely* in reverse, and very light throttle. Really working it hard against itself is far from ideal.

Why doesn't the Bryson switcher do Walker as well? They could take the full ones down and put them with the Appalachian on the big freight. The Freight then dumps them at Whittier and continues on to Sylva. The Bryson switcher meanwhile shoves the empty cars up to Walker for the next day. Less downtime for the Bryson switcher and no need for a new locomotive.
@Hyce77725 күн бұрын

@rdreher738026 күн бұрын
"Yes chef" is actually not that strange of an idea. In English, "chef" means a master cook, but in French it has a much wider meaning of "boss." It's related to "chief," "chieftain," and "captain," all of which come from earlier versions of French. Some other languages like German also use "Chef" in the broader French sense of "boss." "Yes sir," and "yes ma'am" are both terms you use to your superior, and "chef" in the French sense is another word for your superior. Of course most English speakers would not immediately get that, so it made me think that simply saying "yes boss" is a pretty good candidate for a gender neutral "yes sir/ma'am." I personally like "aye, aye cap'n" though, lol. On another note, I'm sorry you got so much crap from the etymology nerds. I'm angry those blokes made us language nerds look bad. When I watched that video, I did kind of wish you had talked about where the word "train" comes from in that video. I had a feeling some people would miss the fact that you are talking about a technical definition of a train not the "original" meaning, and also thought it would have been good to start with a sort of "level one" understanding for lay people/kids who don't even realize that a train is not the same thing as a locomotive. However, I didn't bother to comment on it. Etymology and dictionary definitions are a good example of how knowing only a little bit about a topic can be dangerous. I can speak from my own experience of being on the spectrum that literal or rigid, legalistic thinking about words is a common experience for people like me, and while I grew from etymology obsession to a very in-depth understanding of linguistics, some people are either still not far enough in their development, or so stunted it can get cringe. The result of this is an insistence that words have a single meaning, maybe a technical meaning from science ("tomato is a fruit"), or if they get into etymology an "original" meaning that they assume is the "true" meaning. In linguistics, we talk about the arbitrary nature of words, that the meaning of words is created by context and the community of speakers that uses it. There is no intrinsic "correct" meaning of a word, and words change meaning over time, gain specialized meanings to certain fields, or broader metaphorical meanings, etc. Insisting on being "well actually" with some technical definition or etymological understanding of a word comes from having a little bit of knowledge but not the bigger, wider understanding that you need. Also, the only thing worse than being unnecessarily pedantic is being an a$$hole about it too.
@Hyce77726 күн бұрын
I appreciate the etymology, I just know a couple who use it for... Well, adult-y couple things. Lol!
