Very nice video! It helped me find a problem with my 2008 F-150 when it coughed up a P0446 code. Instead of just replacing the vent valve, I went looking for a wiring problem like in your video. The schematic of the vent valve wiring in your video really helped me narrow down exactly which wires to look at. Where yours turned out to be a damaged power wire, mine had a damaged signal return wire. The wire had bad area where the insulation had been rubbed away over time, and allowed the wire to oxidize and turn green, which created a high resistance spot. This happened right where the two wires from the vent valve split off from the main wiring harness, just like in your video. The bad spot was cut out. The wire was soldered together and covered with heat shrink tubing, and the P0446 problem is now solved. Thank you very much for posting this video!

The F150 Evap vent solenoid connector wire color did change in 2009 to Yellow/red and GRN to ECU pin 20 on my wire diagram and labeled CANV for canister vent solenoid.. The 446 code and 0 volts at connector(koeo). I checked same wire YEL/Red at big harness by firewall and showed 12v. I checked closer to canister vent connector and got one 12v (using T pin ) 12 inch from connection end. I then kept removing the protector harness and exposing wire until 8 inches away and found Yellow/red completely severed . I made repair and after several trips the DTC has cleared.

Nice video 2010 F-150 FX4 Super Crew 4.6 Eco-boost here. So was back there a couple hours at the fuel pump relay, and I do not have the solid GREEN nor the PURPLE WHITE wires. If gets better. I have two wires, YELLOW/GREY or SILVER, and WHITE/BROWN. Around these two wires is wrapped a bare ground lead. So apparently in 2010ish Ford came up with the idea to wrap these wires fore to aft with a bare ground wire in a sheath. The ground is good from the bare ground to the frame back there, through the ground lead. But that’s not telling me anything about the other 20 feet of this harness. I will say this was steel wire, not loaded with corrosion or rust, but not clean either. The easiest thing to try is connect a wire from wherever this bare ground connects up front, back to the ground stud. See if this bare wire ground is the issue. If not is it White/Brown or Yellow/Grey-Silver for power. If that gets rid of my Check Engine Light and Evap code P0046, run the new ground. Your thoughts? And where up front does the ground connect?

I have a 09 Ford f150 v8 4.6 with engine light on, the motor runs good, but it has a code number P0446, capless fuel system, apparently has a small evap leak, is it the evap valve or the fuel fill inlet? Thanks

When you did the Purple/white wire test with your test light. Can you do that test by turning the ignition on and off, I don't have a computer like yours that does it. I have the P0466 code. 2007 F150.

Have a 2003 f150 do not have engine code but it does show a small EVAP leak, replaced purge solenoid and EVAP vent solenoid also replaced all hoses related to EVAP from font to back, still showing EVAP leak ( gas cap new) checked voltage to vent solenoid, showing 4.6 volts could it be a faulty wire like what you found? Did a smoke test and smoke coming out of cannister, so if there is no voltage the valve is then open correct?

I ordered a replacement connector for my 2014 Ford F150 vent cannister because my dogs chewed up the wires, but the wires on the new connector are not color coded like the wires on the car. There are numbers on the connector only (#1 & #2). There are 2 wire colors on the car-yellow w/red stripe and green w/blue stripe. How do I know which wire goes to which # without the tools you have to measure volts, etc? Appreciate your help

Diagnosing a 446 code on a 07 F350 V10. Very similar setup. I have 12 volts no problem on the power side. Snap on guy printed me off the diagnostic procedure which was nice, my scanner is too basic to include the diagnostics. I'm leaning toward it being the solenoid, just trying to make sure, the part is $250, can't afford to be wrong. The procedure says if I have 12 volts, to check the ohms, I was getting around 44, which is out of the range they specify but not by much (and the direction is to change the solenoid if it isn't 48-64ish), but now I can't get a reading not sure what happened there. Can't hear it doing anything. My question would be how much voltage would I expect on the control, and why did you have to tie into the fuel pump to test, why couldn't you just go to ground? Great video.

Hey Tommy, my 2005 f250 5.4 liter is throwing the p0446 code. Getting 11.86volts to the vent solenoid. Hooked up an isolated battery to test the solenoid, and NO clicks. Should I replace that part? Thanks for your help!
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics2 жыл бұрын
If your giving the solenoid a known Good power and ground supply and still do not have operation it’s probably a faulty vent valve

Awesome find Tommy. I was thinking from when u said they had already replaced the sensor my thought was to do a purge/seal test to see if the FTP sensor reacted to change in vacuum. Stick to basics first. Thanks brother😁
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure if it would have ran that test with a vent solenoid fault. But yes keep it simple first.
@NickW906 ай бұрын
So what exactly does this vent solenoid do? Is it an issue if my truck has this code??
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics5 ай бұрын
The vent solenoid opens to allow you to fill the tank with fuel. In the event that the valve sticks closed, it will be hard to fuel up the vehicle. The pump will keep stopping like it’s full. Do you have emissions where you live? It’s an evap leak that will cause an engine light and fail emissions.

The wire colors are different on my 2010 F150 XL at Evap vent solenoid connection. Mine are yellow/red and green blue. On my pin out chart the yellow/red is key on 12v and the green/blue show connection to pin 20 and the ECU completes circuit (ie switch's on/closes circuit). The EVAP purge wire connector is green and White/BRN with Green the 12 volt supply and WB wire going to ECM pin 31 and is switched on thru ECM control. The wire colors and pin out connections are different on some of these F150 2004-2012 years although function of Evap control are same. The location of my Evap canister is under driver side door and Evap purge solenoid is close to firewall; this isn't always true on all F150s. I miss the days of simple carburetor and push rod v8 with no ECM controls and 2000miles of wires and 200 relays and fuses and connectors and warning lights (Yes I'm old).

This failure and solution has been diagnosed thousands of times on the Internet on crappy rusty Ford F150s. Unless you replace the whole cable, you can look forward to fixing it again, just like I did four times. Build their trucks with inferior wiring harnesses. I sold my money, pitt where they don’t do emissions inspections. Good riddance.
