The 70s and 80s had the classics, 90s started the self-awareness in horror, 00s had a lot of cheesy (but fun) horror films, and the 2010s started what they call "elevated horror" or the more artistic horror. They are all great decades of horror just depends on what you like!

Hi Sarah, I am probably one of your older followers. I was born in the 60’s. I love your channel and think we share similar opinions on horror. My first horror movie was Carnival of the Souls and the second was Psycho…. I always loved horror. As a young person we see things so differently and I personally love 70’s and 80’s but now I watch them and smile…. It brings back my childhood. I think that’s what it’s about .

Exactly. I love these types of conversations because it is great for introductions to films. I grew up with straight to videos 80's greatness but 90's/earlyv2000's foreign horror was amazing then you have a lot of gems from there's andv70's. I also love silent German horror films.

Kind of. I grew up in the 2000s and tried a couple of horror movies and just bounced off of them (to this day supernatural horror with weirdly arbitrary forces is my least favorite). Then Get Out renewed my interest in the genre, and now 2010s are my favorite decade (followed by 70s, then 80s). I think it’s simply that we get into the kind of horror that appeals to us, and generally people start with new releases. So it’s not just that you happened to start watching horror in the 2000s; horror in the 2000s appealed to you so you started then.

I think that's exactly why I don't like 80s horror all that much either. It's very showy, "big" cinematic and corporate feeling. It puts tons of focus on presentation and misses the mark on substance. I much prefer 60s-70s horror in comparison, it was more simple but effective and less focus on the package.

supernatural horror is where people are in their house and have to investigate that noise in another part of the house every 5-10 minutes. and there's a minimum of about 10 jump scares over 85-100 minutes. oh and some contortionist covered in black blood and corpse paint walks creepily toward the camera.

I think it's really interesting how each decade really has it's own horror identity! My favorite is actually the 60s closely followed by the 70s, I love folk horror like The Wicker Man, and slow burn psychological horror like Rosemary's Baby and Psycho. I was born in the 90s so didn't grow up with these movies, but I love that because they're so limited in their effects back then that they really played up the tension and atmosphere rather than relying on jump scares and gross out gore like later decades. The 2010s is my favorite more recent decade with movies, and I'd place the 80s last too!

My favourite era of horror is the 70’s with movies like black Christmas, the Texas chainsaw massacre, Halloween, Carrie, Alien, the exorcist, Suspiria, jaws etc. I might be a bit biased cuz I also love 70s fashion and interior design but the feeling of early slashers, suspense films and the start of more disturbing stuff makes me love it These early slashers like tcm Halloween and black Christmas were all really well made and genuinely scary, and while I adore the 80s, in my opinion these movies have a higher quality than the abundance of slashers like friday the 13th, other Halloween movies and nightmare on elm street in the 80s My ranking would be 1. 70s 2. 10s 3. 80s 4. 90s and 00s (I’m sorry)

Beginning my horror journey! So far I’d go (first-last): 70’s, 2010’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s. I personally feel like there’s a flaw in the idea of ranking decades though. There are certain trends that are prevalent in them, but there are masterpieces in every decade, and there are movies that don’t fit the trends in every decade too.

Now that I think about it, the 2010s may be may favorite decade of horror. Get Out is a big part of that, but my favorite genre of horror is supernatural, so I appreciate that we got so much of it in the 2010s The 70s is my second favorite. The grittiest horror films seemed to come from this decade. The 80s got very formulatic, but it gave us so many horror icons. The 2000s would be next, with the 90s last. But I like you said, I love all the horror decades, it's just the 90s didn’t impact me as much as other decades

You said it perfectly, mid 90s to mid 00s were the best for me too. Blair Witch, The Ring, Scream, Final Destination, Saw, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Grudge, just to name a few. But I would put the 80s second for me, the original Poltergeist film was the first horror movie I ever watched and the Nightmare on Elm Street and Child's Play franchises were the first classic franchises I dabbled in so they will always be so sentimental for me 😭

Early-era Gen-Xer here, and I agree with you about how folks find their favorite eras. My top 3 are (in no particular order): 1930s 1980s 2000s Why? Because DC20 used to show old horror movies every weekend during Creature Feature when I was a kid. I was in school in the 80s, so that was peak horrorhound time for me. And the aughts was post-divorce, when I could go see anything I wanted without fearing a +1 would hate it. I have favorites in other decades, but those three decades are my Top Tier horror decades. So far...

Enjoyed hearing your thoughts! It’s amazing how much one’s age influences our perceptions of these sorts of things. I have great memories of renting five VHS horror movies and ordering pizza with friends as a kid during the late 80s. We’d hang out and watch them over the course of a weekend. Lots of affection for that era fueled by nostalgia. Not so much for the early aughts. I remember seeing the remake of The Fog and swearing off PG-13 horror movies for a while (there are plenty of good ones, but that era was rough, imo). But ultimately- you love what you love. Art is subjective. But there’s no need to apologize for sharing an honest opinion. Your video is making me wonder if I gave the early 2000s a fair shot and it’s good to question our assumptions from time to time.

The 90s was the silver age imo (they had moments of following the 80s effects but also making them more unique along the way). The 2000s horror age is underrated imo, I simply enjoy them so much. Both the 2010s and 2020s have made horror make a comeback with amazing effects both in realistic digital effects and good old practical effects. I admire your bravery! i would not attempt this ranking -- i love them all so much. i was introduced to horror in the 70's (yep, probably your OLDEST regular viewer) and am simply happy that i have been able to enjoy ALL the decades you ranked. that being said, 100 percent with you, the 80's are not number one, and i have seen it all.

I started watching horror not many years ago, so the 2010's are my favorite! I love this kind of video because it shows how different people like different stuff in the horror genre and there's nothing wrong with that.

2010s did have a lot of Stephen king adaptations actually. Carrie, mercy, dark tower, it, Gerald’s game, 1922, pet Sematary, in the tall grass, doctor sleep, mr Mercedes, under the dome, the mist.

I don't think the reboot/remake nonsense will ever die. Executives only really care about $$, and view young people as an untapped market since they didn't catch the original 20 years ago. Thank gods for the smaller studios and creative types, though. They're the ones keeping the genre fresh and compelling.

honestly i completely agree with this list and you are very brave for making it the way you did 😅 i used to get a lot of crap for liking early 2000s movies as well but i just learned to ignore people and continue to watch the movies i love.

As someone born in 1990. I totally understand Sarah's opinion and agree 1000 percent with it. I have a strong connection to 2000s and late 90s horror movies because that what I remember watching growing up. It has a very special place in my heart ❤️ and I get super nostalgic thinking about these movies. Loving the content Sarah👌🏼

We're around the same age, so early 00's likewise got me into horror. The Ring will always be on my faves list. But as I've gotten older and explored horror more, the 80's are absolutely my favorite time period for horror. And I don't care much for slashers. I do love body horror and I am obsessed with weird practical effects. For me, Possession, Society, Night of the Demons, Pumpkinhead, Eyes of Fire, and Hellraiser are some of my favorites from the decade. But what you said about nostalgia is very true. I was never around in the 80's but man do I wish I had been. The costumes, music, and overall atmosphere of 80's horror movies are a huge draw for me in that sense. I'm always looking for absolute garbage, over the top 80's movies to get my fix. In that regard, Dolls and Spookies are some of the "best" worst I've found. So fun.

The 2010s is probably my fav era. I feel like there are so many more layers of commentary and theme woven into the narrative and filmmaking. That being said, I also grew up with and adore 2000’s horror and two of my all time fav horror movies are from the 80’s

I love the black and white classics because they were the only "scary movies" I was allowed to watch in the 2000s. I love creature features the most because they were some of the only horror genre movies I was allowed to watch as well. I remember watching boogie man the year after it came out with my family because my dad wanted us to stop griping about watching no scary movies. I remember my brother sneaking out of the house and watching Saw in theaters and told me it was "soooo good and I would pee my pants" at 12 and he was 16. I was allowed to watch the original Fog when I was 11 and I loved it but also wasn’t scared, it was my fathers ultimate scary movie besides ‘66 The Changeling, which I love to this day so good.

Great video, Sarah! Just like yours, my ranking would be entirely from nostalgia lol 1. 1980s - I grew up with my dad showing me a whole bunch of horror films from the 80s and I just really enjoy those movies. Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies of all time along with The Thing. 2. 2000s - I own way too many movies from the 2000s but I'm unashamed in that. So many great movies came from the decade that are just a blast to watch. 3. 1970s - Others that are all time favorites come from this decade. Black Christmas, Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, etc. All fantastic! 4. 1990s - Can't discount this one. Scream is in my top 4 on Letterboxd. I don't remember too many movies from the 90s and as a result I don't have nearly as much nostalgia for it. Plus I was born in 1999 so I didn't grow up in the decade either. 5. 2010s - It just wasn't really the decade for me. A lot of the movies weren't up my alley as much as the 80s or 00s. That said, I still loved movies like IT, Hereditary, and It Follows. Still an enjoyable decade but it's looking like the 2020s might be more up my alley than the 2010s.

I love watching your rankings and videos! My favorite decade is probably the 2010s, I really like the "high brow" horror that came out of it and that's when I started getting into horror. I also really like the demonic supernatural genre and the 2010s have plenty of those. The 2000s is probably my second favorite, I just find them very entertaining and like the hostel franchise !

I would say the 2010s are gonna be known for Demonic/Possession Horror. Since Insidious at the start of the decade, we had a huge influx of movies similar - The Conjuring, The Last Exorcism, Evil Dead, The Possession, Hereditary, Sinister, The Babadook, etc. I love your channel by the way!
