I really liked how Eric was portrayed. He is a British man alone in New York. I think with that back ground it makes sense why in a moment like this he would attach to the first person he had a connection with. I’m shocked at your review. Simply put, lupita doesn’t stop dying of cancer just because the end of the world is happening. I think this movie (pg13 and all) perfectly illustrated that. The juxtaposition between Quinn who is a bundle of nerves and wants to live and lupita who quite literally walks against the crowd in NYC to make peace. She wanted pizza prior to the end of the world, because her end of the world has been happening. She’s been dealing with her apocalypse for awhile. Even the beautiful way she ripped the cord out of the boom box at the end summoning the alien because even though she was dying, she died on her terms and her timeline. This would have been a beautiful drama but was made better with action/suspense/horror elements. The conundrum of a quiet place is how many times can you do a movie about “shhhhh be very quiet”…and this movie accomplishes that…it gave us something new within the backdrop of same old story of quietness. Best pg13 horror in awhile.

Great review, even though I dont agree. Them knowing each other for a few days and actually caring about each other makes sense to me. I had to escape a war torn country as a kid. The people i met enroute to another country became my closest friends. Most of us had met that week, while fleeing. We looked out for each other and once we were out of danger, we spent years trying to reconnect. Humans do care for one another. Propaganda makes us believe we wouldnt in these end of the world scenarios. We are capable of good. If we werent, fighting in wars wouldnt drive people crazy because it would be second nature to kill 🤷🏽♀️

10:11 I've seen this point everywhere, and it is a weak argument. Reason 1: Logically speaking, people tend to hide and stay quiet when threats are nearby. In the US especially, we are taught to close blinds and doors, turn off lights and get low, and remain quiet (school shooter drills) Reason 2: Sound = death. Thus, those who were out running for their lives making noise got clapped first, leaving only those hiding alive. These people are the people who we see in all the movies. Reason 3: Humans are pretty smart and are able to recognize patterns quickly (those who aren't, were killed off quickly) So the military finding out that the sound of their vehicles led to their troops being wiped isn't unbelievable. (Insert survivorship bias) Put these together, and it is not hard to figure out that noise is what is going to get you killed. If people didn't figure this out quickly, there would be no humans left. This was also shown in part 2.

My thoughts exactly!

@@ANTH0NY.VII. completely agree, even in the pov of lupita's character demonstrated her and others who's shock kept them quiet, and that coming out of that shock they were noticing those who were loud got attacked. It's not even that unusual to assume a predator may be attracted to noise, many natural predators irl react to sudden movement or sound, thus with that backdrop one can pretty quickly put the pieces together. I don't get why people have this idea that day one must be several painstaking hours of characters trying to working out the puzzle as it really isn't necessary and could potentially severely limit the story they are able to tell.
@lissa30464 ай бұрын
I agree with this, trying to be quiet has been a staple tension moment in lots of horror movies because sounds can indicate where you are whether you’re hiding from a killer in your house or an alien who has supersonic hearing. What amplifies the horror of that in AQP is that it’s *all the time* and not for a single sequence. Every scene they’re in you’re waiting for them to slip up and make some sort of noise, the stakes are baked into the premise. In this movie, she has to come to grips with the shock and horror of what’s happening before she can also come to grips with her own death, and her stakes ultimately become the survival of Eric and Frodo - you care about the man and about the cat because she cares about them and because you get the sense that she can’t accept her own fate unless she knows they’re safe.

just because shes terminally ill doesnt mean it doesnt matter if she dies or that people wont care because it’s the apocalypse, or that there aren’t any stakes. she wants to get her last wish before dying and i think thats a pretty good motive, even if her last wish is pizza. and in the other quiet place movies people are pretty helpful despite it being risky, so i feel like people being weirdly kind was established in the past movies.

The fact that the main character was already suffering from a fatal sickness didn´t prevent me from rooting for her, as I adored making her final moments on her own terms. That was both soothing and powerful. Talking about nonsense, as much as I agree there´s no way a cat would be that chill, it´s still nothing compared to the 10 minute silent labour with a creature crawling two meters behind. Not as good as the first, but still pretty good! Lupita Nyong’o is a phenomenal actress and she is so beautiful. And (spoiler!!!) I’m so glad the cat lived, such a cute cat! I’ll give this movie a 7.5/10 in my opinion And another spoiler: For anyone saying that all the main character cared about was pizza, that was because she had terminal cancer. She knew she was gonna die either way. Whether it was from the cancer or the creatures. If it wasn’t from the creatures, the cancer would have still killed her. That’s what makes the story powerful and emotional. People complaining just didn’t 100% pay full attention to the movie because it is so much more than just wanting pizza, she had a reason behind it. Anyways, since she knew she was dying, there was nothing wrong with the fact that she wanted pizza. Plus it was the pizza place that brought back memories with her dad that passed away. Another good reason she wanted that pizza. Also Lupita Nyong’o did an incredible job in this movie. Extremely talented actress

I keep seeing people bringing up the swimming thing and I personally just don’t get it 😅. Just because you can’t swim doesn’t mean you can’t be in water. We don’t know where these things come from or know much about their anatomy so we can’t say for sure that water as a whole is bad for them. And they never said they were afraid of water, just that they can’t swim. These creatures are over 6ft tall, so that monster had no problem being in the basement because it can reach the bottom. In deep open water, however, they can’t reach and they can’t swim. It’s like being in a shallow pool vs being in the open ocean, there’s only one you can survive in if you can’t swim. Though, maybe for the sewer scene in this movie I think that maybe the death angel was so focused on getting to Sam and Eric that it wasn’t even taking in its surroundings; Cause it literally drowned itself without even realizing it. As for the boats I kinda disagree. They were on the boat and safe, and there was enough distance between them and land. Since the death angels can’t swim, them stopping for him wouldn’t necessarily be putting them in danger so I can see them actually stopping. And trust, I’m the last person to have any faith in humanity, lol. However, I do wish we got to see the ship attack that was mentioned in the 2nd movie. I thought we would’ve seen it, and it even could’ve been a cool ending to see the people get to the island, but we just saw the one. Which also, I’m pretty sure he said only two got off so I wonder why we only saw one
@Espritlumiere7 ай бұрын
Agree with everything you said. Looking at the Death Angel's physiology, it's pretty obvious that not only are the huge, they're heavy and very dense. It's pretty clear why they can't swim but why one could stand in waist deep water with it's head underwater.

The aliens and the water thing i think it has to do with the depth of the water. Because remember their armor is extremely heavy and causes them to sink. In part one the scene with the mom and the water with her baby that water is not deep at all. I get what you’re saying completely but i think this movie just tried something different. The first two had the same formula and this one did as well they just made it more human in my opinion. I get what you said about Lupita wanting to get pizza when it’s literally an apocalypse going on. I guess she just already made peace with dying due to her cancer. And she felt like if i’m going to die it will be on my terms when i am good and ready. And i feel like we would have to be in those shoes to judge that predicament.

Ok, the thing with the water, to my understanding is this: it's not about whether they can swim or not, it's about the depth of the water. In the first one, the water is deep enough that the alien can wade through it with its head above the water; in the second one, it's a big-ass lake kinda deal and too deep for them to traverse; then in the subway in Day One, the alien chasing them doesn't realise the water is too deep for it to wade through. We never actually see them 'swim' per se, we just see them struggle in deep water.

My opinion… I wanted this to be more of a newer/different pov. I liked the tie in of the dude (can’t remember his name) from 2 but we were told exactly what happened from him in 2. This just gave us a second person’s story of that. Idk I wanted more expansion onto the Why of the series. I liked the beginning ish, where they’re talking about the decibels of NYC, because it made more sense on why they landed there first-ish. Then the scene with the eggs??? Didn’t make any sense and it was placed weirdly. Like the whole “let me follow this cat so I can bring it back to her” makes sense the “cat is going to a weird place that is OBVIOUSLY their landing spot, let me keep going” didn’t make sense because his whole personality is anxiety and he wants to live. Then it wasn’t even like explained well with what we saw. I had to Google what the monsters were eating? And it still didn’t make sense. I don’t know. It didn’t feel strong enough. I love quiet place. The glimpse of their (OG fam) day one in 2 was more realistic than this one was.
@gamingdungeon80947 ай бұрын
They didn't land on earth on purpose lol. Their planet was destroyed or something and the remnants of their world crashed into earth, the aliens are clearly not sentient in the way humans are, they are clearly animals driven by instinct and survival. And maybe apocalyptic stories aren't your thing, because most of the genre is about character arcs in dire and otherworldly situations rarely ever focusing on the "Why" or "Cause" of such events.

I like you, but I think maybe you needed to sit with the movie a little bit longer before reviewing it? I feel like a lot of the things you point out here are rather nit-picky because you need to find specific reasons to explain why you didn't like it, whereas I think it's totally fine to just say that it simply wasn't the movie for you. I think it was a fantastic standalone that focuses on both the desire to live on and the acceptance of death and those themes are clearly represented in the two main characters and by the end of the movie it all comes together quite beautifully.

But it's an enjoyable watch but definitely the weakest entry

i'm surprised that you don't think there's a lot of tension in this movie, because to me it felt like the most suspenseful of the franchise! i thought it did a great job of balancing the tense, scary scenes with the emotional drama stuff. it definitely came close to crossing the line of getting a little too melodramatic at times, but it still managed to make me tear up. probably my favorite in the franchise.

One issue I noticed more with this movie was how the monsters could leap from building to building without seeing where they are going. Their movement didn’t make sense. With all the movies I want to know how they can differentiate between human/animal noises and random noises ex. a can blowing in the wind. Wouldn’t they all congregate at noisy locations like waterfalls? Overall I liked this movie, and thought the characters illness added something new

I mostly agree with you, this movie didn't really get anything new (expect the monsters eating something). BUT I don't know why everybody brings up the water scenes, if they can or cannot swim. - The monsters are probably more dense than water so they would sink in it, and based on their anatomy (if I can say that), they don't really seem to be able to swim. - In the first movie they were in a basement where the monster could just walk under the water. - In the sequel there was a deeper water where the monster just sunk basically. - In "Day One" it's more interesting because it seemed the monster died by suffocating in the sewer, it literally lost air from it's lungs(?), so how did they survive in space?

This is another reason why I don’t pay much attention to marketing and/or trailers because I don’t want to form any expectations and/or biases. For example, smile had some of the best marketing tactics but the movie’s social commentary on mental illness was disgusting. I absolutely adored Quiet Place: Day One. Yes, it’s a creature film and it would have been nice to get more information about them BUT Sammy’s and Eric’s perspectives about life and survival are refreshing. I grew to care them just as much as the Abott family. @foxministry in this comment section describe the point of this movie beautifully.

As a cancer survivor and one that 100% empathizes and understands Lupita story and motivations, the word "sappy" is FAR from my description of the storyline. Are you fucking kidding me?!?! But what do I know? I'm just a sappy cancer survivor. You DID see the aliens land, right? You DID see the impact of the aliens invade, right? You DID see the aliens up close in full frame, right? Then you saw the Day One movie you were advertised. You're just uncomfortable about then cancer aspect of the movie because no one wants to face the reality of their mortality. Now put yourself in the shoes of someone that had to live thru fighting an uphill cancer battle and maybe then you'd get why some people are "gushing" over this "sappy" story.

I agree, this is my least favorite. I went with a small group of AQP fans and I was the sole person who thought it was disappointing. My main beef was the cat. The film would have been better without it. All I could think of was when is it going to meow and get eaten? When will we see a usable litter box? How does the cat always find the person the director wants us to have it find next? Since when does a cat not freak out when it gets near water? Or hiss like Jonesy in Alien when a monster comes near? Every time the cat came onscreen a new question would pop up in my mind and ruin any tension. I honestly cannot recommend this film to any fan of the franchise. I rewatched the first two before seeing this one, and I really love both of them. This one? Super disappointing.

I can TOTALLY see why a quiet place Stan would hate this film, but as someone who was slightly above average on the first 2 (3.5/5 on letterboxed for both) I actually loved this film. lupita has become one of my favorite actresses so maybe I’m biased but I thought there was something so beautiful about her story. You never get an apocalypse film where the main character doesn’t truly care about survival and I thought it was exceptionally unique. Idk I hate to be pretentious but I really loved this movie! I didnt watch Day One, but I think what makes sense about the aliens not being able to swim is about how dense and heavy they are. In the first film, the water is shallow enough for the alien to curiously dip into it (and for dramatic effect), as well as trying to possibly hearing any movements from Evelyn. All things considered, I understand why they can't swim.

I loved it! I think if I hadn't watched spoiler reviews I would be disappointed too. I was well aware it was less of a horror and more of a drama or character study. I also can't judge it by the first two because I've never seen them. When she got out the bus, there were already jets flying, so the government probably already knew something. I'm not sure if it's common for jets to fly over New York. I also think that man tagged along 'cause he was scared, and she was nice (or tolerant), and they attached themselves to eachother because their feelings were so heightened by the apocalypse and they were both alone. I believe you that in real life that might not happen, but it's also a movie - and a movie about aliens at that. They stopped the bus 'cause Djimoun said to, and he's awesome. You gotta do what he says. It looked like to me the alien was struggling to move and that's why they drowned. Emily Blunt looked like she was standing and these monsters are significantly taller than humans. Maybe it was standing instead of swimming. The alien in this movie had also just exerted itself trying to chase the two, so maybe it didn't have enough oxygen in it's lung to wade it's way back to the station.

I thought it was above average. 28 Days Later did a better job of showing isolation in a big city, imo. *SPOILERS* They hid the aliens for some reason for awhile. But they fully showed them in the first two movies. There's also plenty of images of them on the internet. This is not the way to build suspense. I'd really only watch this one if I were watching a marathon of the franchise. The cat survived! So, yay! 😊

I had issues with Day One as well, but not necessarily the ones you posed. I didn’t think the male character being clingy was hard to believe. I absolutely think in a frightening situation, there would be people searching for any kind of human lifeline to hold on to, especially given he was in a foreign country most likely without anyone there he was close to. My issues were logistical. For instance, if the government knew the aliens followed sound, why would they tell everyone to start the evacuation together causing an inevitable wave of sound? Why not start causing a bunch of noise as a distraction on one of the end of the city to draw the aliens away, and then direct everyone to the boats taking a different path? Also if they figured out they couldn’t swim, why not use sound to lure all the aliens to the coast, and then send a bunch of war ships to attack them as a cluster. This is New York City. If there’s any city the government would prioritize defending, it would be New York. Decisions like that were what bothered me the most, and kept me from fully getting invested in the film. My Ranking: #1. A Quiet Place (By Far) #2. A Quiet Place Part 2 #3. A Quiet Place Day One

I found a quiet place really predictable, which cut into all the emotional parts for me, and I just never felt the same fear…or care lol for their lives in the 2nd movie. I think these movies were always trying to hit more of an emotional punch than be a monster movie so I guess I expected that from this too? So I was expecting to be disappointed and was refreshingly surprised! I can see why if I was hyped for this since day 1 (haha) I’d be annoyed but I just love a good emotional story with compelling characters and monsters in the foreground!!

Yeah the movie just did absolutely nothing new, and barely took place on day one. It’s “A Quiet Place: Mostly Day Two & Three” I’m so annoyed we learned nothing new about the creatures, and how the world tried and failed to handle it. I mean come on, what a wasted prequel. As much as I loved the cat, and I am I major cat person, he cat was very distracting for me because the cat only existed when it was convenient. Otherwise, the cat is no where to be seen. Not to mention how much clinging to a cat during an apocalypse pushes my suspension of disbelief. That cat would’ve scratched, clawed, hissed, and ran tf away forever. But in the movie the cat is completely unfazed. It just plays no real role in movie, so why was it there? It’s just hard going back to the beginning after we know what the solution is to killing these things unless it gives a good reason as to why this story needed to be told, and I don’t really think it did.
