Those who go to the workshop are very lucky. I am located in Melbourne Australia, so it is very expensive for just 3 days. But if I had the chance to buy it online I would do it without thinking twice!!! 🙌Enjoy this wonderful event!👏

I watched this and I can see this puppy already has a lot of motivation to possess the pillow. I understand from your (Ivan's) comments elsewhere that the goal is not to create obsession for the toy, but for interactive play. I want to understand possession games better. I used to have a subscription to trainperview and I watched the possession games video and the chase and catch video, but I don't have access to those anymore. I still have the OWC dvds. That was more than 10 years ago. At that time, it was hard for me to motivate my dog to play. He had some drive for the flirt stick or bite pillow, but I must have been thinking that I wanted the game to be about obedience. In your other recent video, you basically describe people that play Possession Games by using obedience so the result is that they look like you -- like Ivan. It's been explained to me that there is the drive to possess, and then the out, and then impulse control. The way I remember it, I was probably killing drive with out commands, and if I would start to demand impulse control (permission to bite), that would basically end the game. So, I don't think I've learned to play this game properly. My dog isn't here to help me anymore. I want to get this sorted out before I think about getting another puppy. Learning to play the game is the most important topic here, but there are some other things that come to mind. You praise the puppy's grip. This puppy has a wonderful full grip that is desired in Schutzhund and the behavior of pushing with the mouth and wrapping the paws that some people want to see. I think that is Belgian Ring. My dog wanted to grip the pillow handles or if I got him to take a full grip, he would not have a lot of bite pressure. For him, preventing me from getting the pillow by intimidating me was a better strategy than gripping hard. But this wasn't just 'resource guarding' because he would drop the object to invite and dare me to take it (he was obviously playing) which I could do either with the line or by scooping it with a hand. He would respond by gripping the line instead of the object. This was intelligent, but it caused me a bunch of anxiety about his grip style because it wasn't the fashionable style. I was able to have a better relationship with him after I quit trying to do anything in Schutzhund or ringsport, Now, I could get a dog that is genetically more predisposed to the behaviors that are desired in those sports, but I could also decide it doesn't matter to me. Being able to play with the dog in a way that the dog enjoys the play is more important.

I like the cooperation + competition idea very much. My non-protection companion dog loves this and I’ve stuck with the give and take and creatively expanding, that you’ve shown in your videos. I’m using it as a relationship developer rather than as a protection and bitework building game. Thank you 🙏

@@corymarinan2996 Hi! Thanks for your reply. This looks like just working through fear in general. He's too scared to even think about play in that video. My dog is not like that. He's not fearful, he's just not very interested. I can get him to chase the ball a couple times, and then he goes absolutely flat. I feel like he only chases the ball, not because he wants to, but because he loves the praise he gets when he goes after it. It's been tricky.

Really enjoyable and will try out letting a bit more possession when playing chase/tug games. Question: do dogs ever become over possessive and snap towards the person trying to take the toy? Almost like resource guarding?

I adopted a 5 year old female GSD from the shelter almost 4 months ago. She's very fearful, and doesn't play. She's also not food motivated. I'm completely out of ideas on how to get her to engage, and want to work. Let's just say that she is doing a lot of laying around and sleeping. It's so hard to watch, and it's breaking my heart 🥹 I can't help but feel that she would be better off with a man... just want her to be happy.
