WHAT IS TRAINING WITHOUT CONFLICT?

For quite some time, people and trainers alike have asked me "What is Training Without Conflict®"?
In this video I aim to provide you, not only with an answer to that very important question, but also the reasons why it is such a powerful training methodology.
I discuss the reasons finding a mentor is crucially important in the development of a trainer and how to identify the right mentor for you.
I dive deep into my history as a trainer and what makes me different from every single teacher and trainer in the industry.
The aspects that separate and allow Training Without Conflict® to rise above all other training methods is also explored in depth.
I hope that by the time this video ends, the only question that remains is "how do I learn more?"

Where oh where were you when I had the health, the dog and income and so desperately looking for someone like you. Even though I have bad health, disabled, old senior dogs and limited finances I still recognize a great trainer( the mind is not the first thing to go). I still keep up watching everything in the dog training world it’s what keeps me waking up the next day. Dog owners, handlers, trainers are so lucky that you are here now. Thank you for all your podcast and videos-it’s something I never thought I would ever be able to experience seeing interviews with the best of the best. Truly a friend of humans wanting to enrich a dogs life. History books will one day reflect the impact you had on both humans and canines.

One of Ivan's stories changed my adopted adult dog right away. Ivan related a visit from a guy who couldn't get his dog to play even though the owner tried every kind of toy. As they talked Ivan noticed the dog was bored and was fiddling with a twig. Ivan then began interacting with the dog using the twig. He also tells us to find how the dog wants to play, and BOTH play according to rules...then you can extend the rules-making. I found that my dog didn't like to be teased when playing fetch, then a long throw. He wanted immediate short tosses up in the air to catch. Then he became addicted to that game, so it comes as a reward for engaging in other training. And I play by his rules. just toss the ball up again as soon as he puts it in my hand...then I run a circle and he comes along parading the ball. Did anyone else ever say to find out what rules the dog likes? Ivan explains that it's not about possessing the ball, it's about winning by playing within the rules you both know. Then you can expand to have more behaviors and rules for them. Now, maybe I have only a tiny grasp of what Ivan said, maybe I've warped it a bit, but that little clue changed my dog..and ME!

Great story. your examples encapsulate the training principle, "start where the animal is, not where you think it is supposed to be". That's why in my view, great training is an art. It's creative. New ways of working can evolve out of acutely observing an animals behaviour; and asking questions -- such as "what would you like to do ..?" in the horse world, I hear this style of interacting referred to as connection work.

@@a24-45 Thanks for the information! I checked out "connection training" and immediately found a beginning exercise I will begin with my dog...getting him to interrupt feeding from the bowl to take food from me, then directing him back to the bowl.

This happened to me too. Possession Games and Chase and Catch 2.0 changed my dogs' lives. I couldn't get my Aussie Shepherd to play fetch with me. Especially not tug. Now it's her favourite game. It's funny how much I didn't realise I was missing in the relationship until we figured out how to play... It has changed everything in my life.

I am 85yrs old and have trained GSDs for approximately 40yrs. I live in South Africa. Several of my dogs competed in SA National Championships at IGP 3 level. I have always trained them in play from puppies to mature dogs. I have had comments from eminent judges from Europe "Happy, free working dog." I now have a 10 month old GSD male. I would love to join the TWC course but sadly impossible for me. I suspect that my "Training in play" is a poor relation to TWC but my dogs have always succeeded in what we have attempted together. I have been working alone at the moment, because I find my methods are generally not understood and finding an appropriate mentor is difficult.

I watch this and realize it is one of the few times I deeply wish I was younger and could start all over again. Instead of working with horses I would choose my dogs and this. How can any younger person who wants to excel and grow with their dogs and help others not want to be part of TWC? I am about to move in a few weeks and may apply to do this next year…is there even room in these classes for a retired person? I will have to find out 😊

That's exactly where I am. I have trained dogs for thirty years and have watched a lot of Ivan...I would drop and run to his school but I'm farther towards the end of my career, not as young as I once was and not certain I could do this now.

A couple years ago I adopted a German shepherd from the pound... she was a liability. In desperation, I somehow accidentally got in touch with a TWC trainer knowing nothing about the program. Within a few sessions, my dog was a totally different dog. She is now my pride and joy, and a very impressive dog. I sometimes think about becoming a dog trainer, and if I ever did, I would definitely be enrolling in this course!

I'm definitely applying to January TWC course. Been following him for a while. My dog is heeling beautifully, while others don't even grasp the training concepts. His "make your dog somebody" is incredible, and glimpses of it would sell the course easily. But I always find these "what is twc" lacking.

Will take it as soon as work will allow. It is one of my top priorities. I have all the available online courses and they are so good. Yes he is a seller like everybody online but there is no question that you get way more than you pay for. I have a dog that is a Rolls Royce. He tracked like a God which I somehow managed to mess up without knowing why. I almost gave up tracking. Lost inspiration. Tried many online and in person courses. Did the tracking course. I’m not kidding. 3 days later. Back to the same level of tracking but even better enjoys it alot more! I’m a plastic surgeon. I work a lot but I still have ambitions in dog sport. I need training to be as efficient as possible. This is! If your serious it’s worth the investment. As soon as I can take enough time off to do the course and train my dogs at the same time I will. For me it’s not if but when.

I would also like to add: I work with some of the best in our field. We do serious research and with high standards. Ivan is one of the few dog trainers who can actually separate good from bad research. When I started to look into the research that has shaped the way our rules in Europe has gone the last years, I was shocked on how they could base decisions on such flawed and low quality research. They accept things that we in medicine who maybe accept as a loose theory as fact. It’s shocking and really depressing.

Can I ask where you are located? I love to hear a plastic surgeon that is interested in Dog sports. Do you have a working line German Shepherd, a Malinois, a Dutchie, or an X herder?

@@Thoriumdogsportthis is so helpful. I work in tech and I work a lot but also would like to pursue dog sports. I thought courses like this should be for dog trainers only or just dog sports in general are for dog trainers only so I was a little timid to take the courses. But seeing other people with careers but also wanting to do this as a hobby is very reinforcing. Currently reading John Staddon books be I commit to take his course
