Update on a latest house build, still a lot of work to be done to completion. Our job is still to install a larch siding after other contractor finishes the heath and water insulation.. A lot of different contractors are working on this house at the same time so I didn't have a chance to film all the details, just a bit here and there to give you an idea of the process. Anyway, I collected all the clips from all of my sd cards and edited them into this video, Hope you like it! I plan to make one more video of siding installation and of the finished house. I hope it will be soon.. Feel free to ask any question in the comments!
Thank you for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe! :D
Architect of this house is Minja Jošić.

I found it interesting in a post and beam house that in some instances you didn't use the beams to carry the load but instead chose bolts. If you are building a post and beam house why not let the structure of the lumber carry the load rather than relying on fasteners.
@lignumchannel
@lignumchannel 2 жыл бұрын
It mostly has to do with standards and price, bolts are easier to calculate, and you can guarantee they will hold as much they are calculated to hold. When cutting the posts for example, you are removing a part of cross section of that post so it could hold the horizontal beam, therefore you have to use a bigger post, and it drives the price up. Also the work needed to make a perfect fit so the load can transfer safely from one element to the other is much more expensive than using a simple bolt. When making a structure where wood is left visible I prefer using minimum of steel, but where it will bi mostly covered, it is much more economical to use fast, cheaper, and trustworthy connecting steel elements..

one thing as a U.S. architect and someone that works with structural engineers ALL THE TIME, not having the edges of the plywood line up over a rafter/joist and floating over nothing is exactly what you don't want. Regardless if the plywood is T&G (tongue and grooved) there is structural formulas for attachment (screw) spacing for the 'edge' of the plywood and the 'field' of the plywood. This is for shear strength and racking support. I am surprised at the amount of detail is given @ ~0:47 and they have X-bracing routed into the rafters so that the ply can lay flat but A/E doesn't give ANY directions on sheathing installation? Its not just a layer/skin on the system. It actuals DOES something for the structure. If the sheathing doesn't matter, why OSB/Ply T&G? Why not gypsum or some other material? If OSB/T&G does have the racking/shear support, why the X-bracing? Perfect example, (I know its is super high speed) @ 0:58, there is a TINY piece of ply being added on the roof.... I would rather walk on strapping over that gap instead of stepping on that substrate/sheathing!!! That will no-doubt be the soft spot on the roof in 25 years and the only thing holding it together is the T&G part of the ply.... And all they had to do was to make sure that piece went in between the two rafters..... Now go back and rewatch all the times they have the plywood dangling in air...... Otherwise nice work and nice design. Framers, get your stuff together. Not Good.

Acording to projected max forces for this house at this geographical location, about 70 square meters of 18 mm osb is required to take the horisontal forces in adition to steel braces and other load bearing elements. I don't know the exact numbers by hearth (I'm on vacation right now) but there will be more than 700m2 osb covered area in the house when interior of the walls will be instaled. Also investor chose 22mm osb for the outer skin instead of calculated 18mm. That is around twice as thick than osb most commonly used for outer sheating in the U.S. I agree that it's stronger to align it on joists but after all that previously said, it would be a waste of aditional material and time (money) for an investor to align it all on joists , wouldnt you agree? Especially with wood prices atm.. those 22mm t&g osb parts "dangling" will never become a soft spot.. only weight of wool will be ever perpendiculary applyed to them and they can hold a persons weight without a problem. If we used 3/8 or 15/32 inch commonly used in U.S. it would be another story.. Why not gypsum or something else? You would have to ask the architect but I assume it was the best ratio of price and quality at that given time. Elements that will hold the wooden and aluminum ventilated siding/roofing are conected thru osb to joists and other load bearing elements. Otherwise, I'm glad you like the project..

Great work! Only one question: why in a wooden house they (if you aren'y in charge of the windows) don't install wooden windows instead of PVC or aluminum ones? Thank you for the answer and keep going with your amazing work!!

I would guess price / availability / maintenance.
@YegresAL
@YegresAL 3 жыл бұрын
Usually wooden (frame-) houses are built with thermal efficiency in mind (at least at Europe) - and wooden windows are the worse in that thermal efficiency. Or you'll have window as thick as wall nd it would be really hard to use it in usual way. Plus, during time wooden window will degrade much quicker then PVC/aluminium ones with further decreasing at thermal efficiency.
@lignumchannel
@lignumchannel 3 жыл бұрын
I would have to check with the investor, but thermal insulation is the main reason I guess.. there are wood and aluminium combinations available that have both the looks and eficiency but they are quite more expensive. Also top part of the siding will be in aluminium so they will go together quite nicely..
@beast33182
@beast33182 3 жыл бұрын
@@lignumchannel Thanks for the answer! I'm a wooden windows maker in Italy, that's why i asked this question, and speaking of efficency PVC and wood are about the same, but aluminium is pretty worse. Speaking of maintenance I agree that wooden ones give some more work to do, but we both know that wood is always better :D
