Post-Spring Big Ten Power Rankings | Big Ten Football 2024

On this cut of Touchdown Talk with College Football with Sam, @BIG10_Quicktalk and I discuss our post-spring Big Ten power rankings for the 2024 college football season. The spring portal window has closed and spring practices have concluded, giving us a better picture of what the Big Ten may look like this coming season. Ohio State Football still holds the top spot, but Oregon Football is dominant and following close behind. I expect Michigan Football to still flirt with a National Championship, and Nebraska, USC, and Rutgers should also make some noise. I think after 1-4, it gets a lot harder to rank. With so much changeover with the coaching changes and transfer portal, last year doesn't mean a much. I would have USC, Nebraska, and Iowa in the 5-7.

Gotta agree with the top 4. Washington and USC are still big unknowns for now, given their questionable defenses and loss of Heisman caliber qbs. I can't for the life of me understand the Rutgers hype, although their schedule might be one of the easiest in the conference, they're going to be starting Kaliakmanis, who was abhorrent last year. The middle of the road is pretty good, teams like Washington, USC, Nebraska, Michigan State and Wisconsin all have a chance to break out, although Wisconsin will have to work for it considering their schedule. And the bottom is all expected. Northwestern will probably never be the same (with those flip flopping records) Purdue seems lost, Illinois *is* lost. Maryland can't be carried by Taulia, UCLA loses their just *decent* qb and Indiana had the biggest transfer portal departure class in the big10.

Im not buying the west coast teams this year. All the west coast teams will get a surprise. Non of them will be that great aside from Oregon. And ill be very surprised if they adjust to big ten style of football that translates to wins on the first season.

Nobody knows how good Maryland is going to be. Nobody talks badly about Maryland, but everyone thinks Rutgers is going to be better than Maryland. Maryland blew out Rutgers last year. Maryland did not have Taulia against Auburn in the bowl game and did ok. Mike Locksley is an underrated coach.

PJ Fleck has been averaging 8-9 wins a season. Last year they were riddled with a ton of injuries. They have a ton of production coming back, one of the highest PFF graded QB’s in the B1G, and potentially the best RB in the B1G Darius Taylor. They have a new DC who runs essentially the exact same scheme as Rossi. They have elite speed and strength at the DE position. I can keep going but I hope you get my point.

@@wattsinc. I agree that they are going to be great! I said that Darius could POSSIBLY be the best RB in the B1G. Not saying it’s a guarantee, but he has a veteran and talented Oline and the skill to make it happen. I do think OSU is the clear favorite and possibly the most talented team in the entire country and should be a shoe in for the national title game.

Too small to handle the physicality of the likes of Michigan, Oregon, Ohio State. They wouldn't last a full 4 quarters against any of those teams (I know they don't play Michigan at all) but they're easily 4th, in my opinion.

That "best rb in the b10" had *one* 100 yard rushing game against an in-conference opponent and it was against the floundering Northwestern. Your "highest graded qb in the b10" last played in New Hampshire, who got blown out 77-7 the last time they played a power 5 opponent. You lost 18 players to the transfer portal, we lost 8. Pj fleck has won 8 games a year, by playing in the trash heap that has been the big10 west, and has stayed consistent by not moving on from tanner Morgan for his whole career. He is an astounding 18-19 without consistent quarterback play from Morgan. And huh, I wonder where nebraska was last year, without consistent quarterback play? A whopping 24 points away from a 10-2 record. PJ fleck is lucky he's been handed yet another cupcake schedule unlike Wisconsin, Illinois, or Purdue. Where he'll get blown out by the non-fakers of the conference like every other year.

It's just a projection based on fairly minimal information. I wouldn't worry too much about these opinions. The way I see it, Michigan is going to be a lot better than many people think, but I definitely understand the rationale for ranking them 3rd, but the data on paper is misleading. This team returns a lot more production than many people realize due to their deep rotation last year.

College football rosters change rapidly every year. You can’t simply list Michigans performance against Ohio State on the last 3 seasons as primary evidence for what happens this season. Why do that? Why not factor in the last 10 seasons? Why only the last 3?
