Hello Dr. Todd, I am a retired Correctional Officer, I worked with Jennifer San Marco when she was employed at CRC in Norco, Ca. Jennifer originally was employed at Chuckawalla State Prison, Blythe, whereas she was fired for having sex with male inmates. CRC s Warden after a time allowed Jennifer to return as a C O. , then promoted her to a rank of Sergeant. A few months later, Jennifer picked up her inmate boy friend from the Blythe prison, He just paroled, and traveled to Arizona and robbed a convenience store, using Jennifers gun, then returned to California whereas CHP units stopped them on interstate 10 thus arresting them both. During a search of Jennifer car, her CDC Sgt. uniformed and weapon was discovered. She was fired again. I am at a loss as why she never did ant time, nor why a county sheriff would employ her as a dispatcher. Jennifer was a self centered psycho when I worked with her, always seem to please the Warden. Dr. Todd your time line is on, date and years are correct, but I added personal background regarding Sgt. Jennifer San Marco.

They'd be contrary & overtly aggressive, never answer questions when the psych nurses asked them questions to try to get a gauge on how they were progressing mentally & they'd never participate in the classes & group therapy sessions, which I would have thought would help them progress to wellness if they did. Many of them would get illicit marijuana smuggled in & smoke it in our rooms & it was their use of potent weed that got them institutionalised in the first place...I hope the patients that did apologise to you were genuine & they made an effort to raise their standards when their psychosis subsided.

I was working that day on overtime since it was normally my day off. I knew Jennifer San Marco quite well, she would sit with me sometimes at lunch wanting to know how to buy stocks which I knew a lot about. I also knew everyone she killed, they were my co-workers who I had worked with everyday for years. When she started she was a great worker and very friendly, but after about a year that changed and she became a completely different person. Many believed that she had stopped taking her medication but no one really knows. I first noticed it when I said "Hi Jennifer" and she didn't respond but gave me an angry look. I thought maybe I had offended her in some way, I just didn't understand it because she had spoken friendly to me almost everyday for more than a year before that. Anyway, the night it happened, I heard the gunshots while I was scanning Priority Mail and then everyone started to run to the dock where the trucks were, for safety. Dexter Shannon was one week away from retirement. Charlotte Colton was an employee trainer. She actually was not working that night, she had just popped in for a few minutes to leave off some paperwork, even though she could have done it the next morning. A deaf employee that she really liked when she worked there, was at the time clock ready to leave when she spotted him. He later told me she smiled at him and then went on her way, he was spared! Right after she shot Charlotte Colton, she aimed her gun at the head of a lady employee who would have been killed for sure, except for the fact that her gun jammed, giving time for that employee to escape. I had worked at that office since 1989 and loved working there, but after that happened in 2006 it just wasn't the same. I happily took early retirement in January 2013, after 23 years. You can legally obtain a firearm and have been on a 5150 hold. California appears to have a 5 year period before you can obtain a gun, though.
@chrisnanopoulos99057 ай бұрын
@@yourfuturewaifu9061 It depends on the state. It doesn’t allow that in my state of Pa. It shouldn’t be allowed in any state, if it involves any shaky mental history. That’s my opinion, I think that may be asking for trouble. Mental illnesses can’t be cured, although treatment can be helpful and successful. They should never be able to legally acquire a firearm.
@MrOnyxRaven7 ай бұрын
The form to purchase a firearm is ATF Form 4473. That is a federal form. Section 21g: "g. Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?". If either are true, you are prohibited to possess a firearm under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g), aka The Gun Control Act. State law has no bearing on any of that. Not everyone who is taken for an involuntary mental health evaluation is "committed" to a mental institution. Some people "pass" the evaluation and that is that. Also, just because they are "committed" doesn't mean it gets properly reported. Same with criminal convictions.

Her diagnosis isn’t known, that I can find. Her diagnosis is actually irrelevant. This didn’t show up on her background check; supposedly. This is what the pawn shop says, that sold her the gun. It took only two days and it was in her hands. Like I said, anyone with any kind of shaky psychiatric history should be banned from owning or possessing any firearm. It’s not going to kill them( no pun intended), but it may save some lives and theirs, preventing them from acquiring it. It’s not a necessity of life. This was too easy for her. If there’s a will, there’s a way. They may acquire one, regardless. The safeguards are lacking and maybe, set up some kind of system, where anyone with any psychiatric history, trying to obtain a firearm, would be prevented and authorities notified. That’s how I feel about it. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Populations increase and already well developed/desirable areas become more expensive to buy. For example, you can find plenty of places now that are cheap but they're not very developed and/or desirable BUT might be in 30 years. On top of this is just natural population increases which fundamentally increase the price of property. I'm not saying Sant Barbara wasn't developed or desirable back then but it has become more developed and more desirable (which can mean more job opportunities, less relative crime, better schools, more facilities/infrastructure etc.).

Newman, the U.S. postal mailman in the sitcom Seinfeld explained very well why some postal workers go crazy and ultimately may kill people: ''Because the mail never stops, it just keeps coming and coming and coming. They're never a letup. It's relentless. Every day it piles up more and more and more. And you got to get it out. But the more you get it out, the more it keeps coming in. And then the barcode reader breaks and is clearing house...'' At this point Kramer stops his hysterical rant. Great analysis.

When my sister was 16 years old our Aunt was making a prom dress for her. Our Aunt who is not very kind or sensitive told my sister that yellow was not her color. She said my sister looked horrible in yellow and looked like a bumblebee. This comment rooted in my sister and grew into hatred of our Aunt. 100% the experiences she had in childhood caused this. Dr. Grande says not a lot is known about that time, but since I've been studying the effects of emotional/physical abuse on children and how it affects their adult lives, it is undeniable that these kinds of mass killings don't just come out of the blue. She absolutely was severely emotionally neglected, this is what causes the mental break which leads to the creation of the "imaginary friends." She may have also been sexual assaulted as a little girl. This offense in particular makes it close to impossible for a person to have close relationships with others as an adult, and often leads to depression/suicide later in life. The only way America is ever going to stop mass shootings is going to be when we acknowledge, as a nation, that the core of all human social, political, and psychological human problems is the wounded inner-child.

Your comment reminds me of the movie Bad Milo. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but I'll summarize the film in case you haven't. This man inherits a butt demon from his father. The man's butt demon is named Milo, and Milo kills people who upset his owner.

This is sad 😢 mental illness is so difficult to manage and alot of people don't take their medications
@kellyyork38987 ай бұрын
It’s always sad when people have paranoid ideation because it never ends well. Eventually, they either have these paranoid thoughts about people around them and end up acting on these thoughts to “protect themselves,” or because of their paranoid thoughts, and the actions which accompany them, they annoy/frighten someone to the point where the other person attacks the original paranoid person-a self-fulfilling prophecy. Either way, bad things eventually happen. Assaults and even deaths can occur. Watch out for people with paranoid thoughts.

A friend of mine from Mio Michigan had a sister that worked at Dow Chemical plant and after many years working there she retired and calmly went out of her head in such ways as removing all her clothes and running down a rural rode etc. Nothing violent, but always something unexpected and out of character. Their father also worked there in the early years and died earlier than normal. TOO MANY CHEMICALS.

i worked at the post office for 2.5 years back in the 1980's the pressure that the supervisors put on their employees was unreal. there were some pretty mentally ill people that i worked with. there was one man that was bat**** crazy he talked to himself constantly loudly and laughed out loud often. another one was a drunk that did some really wild stuff and also molested his grandsons while taking them on "camping trips."
@alukuhito7 ай бұрын
I think it's more than just a coincidence that people use the term "to go postal" in English. There's something unique to working at the post office in the USA or Canada. In Canada, I don't know how exactly it is now, but for the longest time it was a job in which workers got paid quite a bit of money compared to the easiness of the job. The union is strong because everybody wants their mail. As soon as conditions aren't met, workers can just go on strike. Everybody gets pissed off when their mail isn't delivered, so demand the workers go back. The workers eventually get what they and their union want. I think it gives workers a sense of entitlement. My sister's attitude completely changed once she started a regular job at the post office. She used to be really kind, but after starting work at the post office, she got really macho, vulgar, and entitled. Like this woman, she held grudges. Suddenly everything was our parents' fault, the government's fault, everyone else's fault. I miss my pre-post office sister. We used to be able to talk about our mom, but she made it clear that was not a topic to bring up with her. She'd go into some weird defensive mode. Thankfully she has never shown any violent tendencies and she has become calmer lately, after a new man in her life and quitting the post office. I really do think though that that particular job, at least in Canada and the USA, isn't conducive to good mental health, at least for some people.

I have an honest question: why is it, when a person is displaying such obvious symptoms of severe mental illness, and they have repeated interactions with law enforcement, why is something not officially done to place them into care? It would obviously, as so many of these instances demonstrate, save a ton of lives. Why won't the authorities do something to help a suffering person? And in doing so, protect the public?
@coryingman3 ай бұрын
Brcause the GOP ran a disinformation campaign throughought the 1970s to scare the public into letting the federal government shudder the mental hospitals. So, the people which society has no place for were simply dumped onto the streets, literally. This is a large driver for the murder and violence wave that peaked in 1992. That and leaded gasoline.
@Alex-gw9mj9 күн бұрын
Money. Starting in the 60s and actually ending around the time this happened we closed asylums. Because they were constantly and consistently committing egregious human rights violations, worldwide. There started to be more of a focus on at home care and of course more ethical accommodations such as group homes which are extremely expensive in comparison to asylums due to the increased level of care and most group homes are for profit, and privately owned. The issue we run into is most severely mentally ill people either don’t have families that care about them, or their families can’t afford literal hundreds of thousands of dollars of continuous care. They also can’t ’afford’ at home care as that requires a family member essentially doesn’t work in order to provide that care they are hardly ever equipped to provide. There are of course government programs to assist in the cost of this care, but I think it’s pretty clear to all of us by the daily mass shooting headlines these programs are falling short.

Great analysis Dr. Grande. Some of these cases sound like hypoxia. A mountain climber took a video of himself getting settled for the night in his tent in low oxygen conditions. He was talking to himself and disorganized, very goofy like drunk. Its common for brain damaged people not to be aware of their condition. One true crime story about axe murder, the victim got up and tried to get ready for work. Very sad. So, not to excuse the crimes, but to avoid them if it is from an injury or disease process in the perpetrator. It could explain the paranoia and anger. Not being conciously aware of a disability but instinctively knowing and angry that there is no help from perhaps coworkers or neighbor. There are conditions that are not obvious, and cannot be determined superficially because they are hidden in the meta bolic or transport processes. So, new ground.

Or maybe you have no idea how difficult it is to get help for the mentally ill in this world. I have an adult son that I have been dealing with for years!!!……an involuntary committal they keep him for 2 days with “orders” for him to follow up but he doesn’t and nobody enforces those orders. So it’s easy to sit and judge but very different when you live it.
