It sucks how frequently you hear about cool technologies being held back by a single company holding the patents for it
@AlphaetusPrime
@AlphaetusPrime Жыл бұрын
That's why patents expire. In this case, since they last 20 years and the technology first reached maturity and became commercially viable in 2004, we're likely to see the end of E-ink's monopoly soon.

Prysm Systems have a patent for laser phosphor displays which are insanely cool but it seems like theyll hold on that patent forever and never release the displays to the consumer market.... thats ofc until the patent expires... but thats a long time from now...

Lol, we wish, @@AlphaetusPrime - There are many loopholes companies use to re-patent things. Isn't that why Insulin is so expensive? They keep changing it by a few molecules.

@@AlphaetusPrimeI think it will be better but not perfect, I imagine the patents that are expiring are not for the more advanced tech. Though I suppose that now companies can advance on the tech in their own way and will actually be able to sell displays without infringing on the patents for the 'basic'/fundamental tech.

2:31 This is also how my child drawing tablet worked that I had with me during car rides. I could draw on that and then when I wanted to make the canvas clean again, I would move a big thing over the screen and the draw again. I eventually figured out that I was pulling some magnetic power or something to the top of the screen. Was a really cool children toy tbh.

This e-paper stuff always fascinated me since the first day I saw an e-book tablet as a kid, while it's really niche as a product, I've always hoped it as a cool futuristic replacement for certain things in the future, like paintings, books in libaries etc. Doubt it'll actually become anything big until some sort of breakthrough new invention happens, or until patents are made public.
@fouzr

There are devices like the Kindle Scribe these days that let you write notes at a really good latency of sub 10ms if I recall correctly. Still a niche, but the tech is definitely improving, albeit, very slowly
@HappyJackington
@HappyJackington Жыл бұрын
Like @fouzr said, I have a ReMarkable and it has made a huge difference in my life. I am a habitual note taker and journal-er, and it fills a niche that a tablet never did for me. The price point is terrible and I honestly can't wait for the patents to run out so that e-paper is made public. The thing that sold me on my ReMarkable was the fact that it lasts for a week on a single charge. E-paper is such an efficient display technology. As long as you do not need a high refresh rate, it's perfect.
@fouzr
@fouzr Жыл бұрын
@@HappyJackington yup, the reMarkable is an excellent example. I own one myself, and love using it on the daily. And as a bonus, it’s a fairly open embedded Linux machine, which lets you tinker with it quite a bit Tho I think even after the patents have expired, the cost of manufacturing it will still be quite higher than any LCD panel. The yields of those panels aren’t great afaik

I worked on the original Amazon Kindle, and one time I had left a prototype device in the window sill for a few days and then found that the screen had turned completely dark, although it cleared up the next time I rebooted it and refreshed the screen. My theory about what happened there was that the photovoltaic effect caused the screen charge to very slowly change, causing the black ink balls to eventually drift to the surface.

While your videos are stunningly shot, wonderfully narrated and thoughtfully directed, possibly my favourite thing about them is how every single aspect of them are *yours*. The music is yours, the impeccably high quality footage is yours, the subjects of the video are heirlooms of yours (like the drawings and machines from other vids) and ultimately the entire concept is you just rattling off things you discover and find interesting about the subject rather than reading from a specs page (as far as I can tell at least). As a kid in the '90s, my family had a toy that was like this but with a magnetic powder in the cells, and you would draw on it using a little magnetic pencil or some other circular magnets that came along with it. There was a big magnetic bar that slid behind it all to erase your scene, pulling the magnetic dust to the back layer where you couldn't see it any more. I think it was called a "magnadoodle" or something like that.

I recently finished my apprenticeship as an electronics technician, and the final project I was assigned was to design driver circuitry for a very simple e-ink bargraph display (6 segments: t dots + background). They’re simultaneously very simple to drive, yet also very hard to drive _well_ (note in the macro of the thermometer refresh how it has to do multiple write/clear cycles and that during them, the segment sizes grow, and that the segments that are “off” have a gray outline).
