I'm in Central Texas. Zone 9. Heavy clay soil over rock/kaliche. My St. Augustine greens up with fish emulsion. I diluted it in a bucket and sloshed it on the grass. Not a perfect way, but it worked ok. Going to do it again. Cuz the "plastic snow" hurt it bad. Now, it's very yellow. I'm confident the fish emulsion will green it up again.

Subscribed. My main take-away was not to try and fix it all in one application. My front Zoysia lawn soil test shows the love I put in. Now it's time to renovate my fenced in back lawn (put down Zoysia and let it fill in) which is 10,000 sq. ft., and I have high N, high P, low K, low Ca, 5.3 pH, 0.6 Fe (should be 2-4 range). Two dogs in the 55-65 pound range so I can't take the lawn to bare soil to seed properly, so I'll rough up the soil with a SunJoe dethatcher, bag the trash, throw down seed, mow and bag frequently enough to try and keep the existing grass & weed at 1.5"-2", and if 1 seed in 100 take root, I'll consider that a win because Zoysia will take over with a touch of love and herbicides at the right time. That, and I'll take a ton of plugs from the front to fill in the edges. Wish me luck!

Welcome! It looks like youve got all the info you need to grow great grass, let’s hope the dogs cooperate!

My state soil test from the guys here a NC states my K is low in my zoysia yard. They give me an index number of 38 with their scale that the normal is between 50 to 70. My P is really off the charts high (144 with their normal between 50 to 70). I just recently put out 10 lbs. of 5-0-20 which gave me 2 lbs of K and 1/2 lbs. of nitrogen per 1K sq. Ft. It also had 10% iron. It really respond well so far. I was thinking about doing this again in about 6 weeks for my last summer feeding. I also give a rotating diet of Micro-green, RGS, Air-8, Humic 12, and soon to be D-thatch. Oh yea, and Hydretain. What is your thoughts, especially about the 5-0-20?

JP, this was a super relevant topic of discussion. I'm on a macros & micros kick right now. My issue in Central TX soil is that most everything is severely deficient (except for off-the-chart calcium). Super low N, higher P but just below "optimal," and then super low K. I test yearly before any applications to get a snapshot of my soil profile, and every year I get identical results. Only real improvement is slightly bringing pH from 7.8 to 6.9 over 4 years through the use of elemental sulfur. Should I just simply avoid any ferts with Phos since it's almost in optimal range❓

Hang tight.
@goodrabbi71764 жыл бұрын
Based on the general tone of the video, I would say that those doses of K helped strengthen your turf, short term. If you were/are(?) deficient, it will require more than just a season to get balanced. The prodiamine, for example, is only 7% K. If you put down 1 lb/1000 sqft, you are putting 0.07 lbs/1000 sqft. I’m pretty sure that if you are deficient, it is by more than that. 🤏🏼And a lot to unpack in a Comment. :) I get my tests from LCN.
@ammedsaavedra52964 жыл бұрын
@@goodrabbi7176 I do split applications of prodiamine in spring at 3 lb/1000 sqft for a total of 6 lb/1000 sqft. Thats .42 lbs K in spring. Then I do a Fall application of Dythopher which is (0-0-20) and I believe the bag rate on that is 3 lb /1000 sqft .6 lbs of K in fall. So I guess I am basically throwing down 1 lb in a season. I guess I am already doing what John is recommending. Spreading out my applications of K throughout the season. I am considering the Yard Mastery summer stress blend for my summer Fert application as its 7-0-20. But I also got some of that 9-0-1 GreenStart that I planned to use as my summer fert. Maybe 1.6 lbs K per season is too much?? Thoughts?

Something I was just made aware of in soil tests for row crop purposes... apparently base saturation percentage in mag and k is also something to keep in mind. Not ppm alone, so I’m curious what your thoughts are on BS% and how it applies here. Some soils seem to have less plant available K due to tie up, for sure. For a reference marker the recommendation I’ve seen is 3% to 6% K base sat with some variance for crop type. But that’s not a lawn, so what would be your experience with this measurement vs ppm of K as the only guidepost? Thanks :)
@Lawncology4 жыл бұрын
I actually did a video about this a year or two ago. Base saturation does play a role and it’s way to much to type here, but there are ranges and if for guideline purposes you had 65-75%Ca, 15-20%Mg, 3-5%K, gets you in a pretty good saturation zone. These can vary with soil type
