What's up everybody!? Surprise vid drop all about Potash, Potassium, K for lawns... How much do I need and Why? This is an important topic that gets overlooked a lot and I go into detail about the role of potassium in your turf, the types available, the best bang for your buck and how to do corrections.
This video was shot quickly and in a moment of inspiration from an online post today, between a multitude of other videos I'm working on. I'm sorry for not warning you and we will get back to our regularly scheduled live drops later this week.
Potassium helps maintain turgor pressure in the cells of the plant, resulting in a positive influence on drought tolerance, cold hardiness, and disease resistance. As a result, potassium deficiencies in turf may cause increased susceptibility to drought, winter injury, and disease. Therefore, potash is very important in your program.
I go into the difference between plant/foliar K and correcting soil deficiencies as there is a major difference there. I encourage you to check label rates on liquids to determine what you are actually getting in pounds or in other words, what you may not be getting. Higher potassium leading into summer can be the best summer fertilizer option in most cases.
I often recommend Sulfate of Potash which can at times be hard to find. turf supply stores tend to be the best bet and expect 32-40.00 per 50lb bag under those circumstances. for small mail order amounts:
amzn.to/2AnqAiP for a 5lb bag.

I'm in Central Texas. Zone 9. Heavy clay soil over rock/kaliche. My St. Augustine greens up with fish emulsion. I diluted it in a bucket and sloshed it on the grass. Not a perfect way, but it worked ok. Going to do it again. Cuz the "plastic snow" hurt it bad. Now, it's very yellow. I'm confident the fish emulsion will green it up again.

JP, this was a super relevant topic of discussion. I'm on a macros & micros kick right now. My issue in Central TX soil is that most everything is severely deficient (except for off-the-chart calcium). Super low N, higher P but just below "optimal," and then super low K. I test yearly before any applications to get a snapshot of my soil profile, and every year I get identical results. Only real improvement is slightly bringing pH from 7.8 to 6.9 over 4 years through the use of elemental sulfur. Should I just simply avoid any ferts with Phos since it's almost in optimal range❓

Subscribed. My main take-away was not to try and fix it all in one application. My front Zoysia lawn soil test shows the love I put in. Now it's time to renovate my fenced in back lawn (put down Zoysia and let it fill in) which is 10,000 sq. ft., and I have high N, high P, low K, low Ca, 5.3 pH, 0.6 Fe (should be 2-4 range). Two dogs in the 55-65 pound range so I can't take the lawn to bare soil to seed properly, so I'll rough up the soil with a SunJoe dethatcher, bag the trash, throw down seed, mow and bag frequently enough to try and keep the existing grass & weed at 1.5"-2", and if 1 seed in 100 take root, I'll consider that a win because Zoysia will take over with a touch of love and herbicides at the right time. That, and I'll take a ton of plugs from the front to fill in the edges. Wish me luck!

@@Lawncology I'm in Central Virginia, everything grows, but nothing truly thrives. I have some Rye and KBG in a 600' test patch, but I think the Zoysia will give a better layer of protection against muddy paws once it fills in. I don't know anybody around with KBG, so I'm testing. I'm a lawn care nerd...what can I say.

Is there a link to that map? This was really helpful, helped me understand the clay soil out here. And, not necessarily a bad thing. I learned in college we have the third richest soil content in the world. Before this was Silicon Valley, it was known as The Valley of the Hearts Delight - famous for all the stone fruit that grew here. Growing up it as all orchards - apricot, cherry, plums and prunes. I miss those beautiful orchards.

My state soil test from the guys here a NC states my K is low in my zoysia yard. They give me an index number of 38 with their scale that the normal is between 50 to 70. My P is really off the charts high (144 with their normal between 50 to 70). I just recently put out 10 lbs. of 5-0-20 which gave me 2 lbs of K and 1/2 lbs. of nitrogen per 1K sq. Ft. It also had 10% iron. It really respond well so far. I was thinking about doing this again in about 6 weeks for my last summer feeding. I also give a rotating diet of Micro-green, RGS, Air-8, Humic 12, and soon to be D-thatch. Oh yea, and Hydretain. What is your thoughts, especially about the 5-0-20?

Pulled some plugs for a guy to do a SA. He sent his off to soil savvy. Results came back that they recommend 20 lbs/1000 of a MOP I have recommended that we delay that application and split it up in the fall. Plus my three suppliers whom I’d love to name have no available SOP Pisses me off. We see low K here in northern Cincinnati all the time and I don’t like using high rates of MOP because of the higher salt index. Timely K talk. Thanks for the video

Something I was just made aware of in soil tests for row crop purposes... apparently base saturation percentage in mag and k is also something to keep in mind. Not ppm alone, so I’m curious what your thoughts are on BS% and how it applies here. Some soils seem to have less plant available K due to tie up, for sure. For a reference marker the recommendation I’ve seen is 3% to 6% K base sat with some variance for crop type. But that’s not a lawn, so what would be your experience with this measurement vs ppm of K as the only guidepost? Thanks :)
@Lawncology
@Lawncology 4 жыл бұрын
I actually did a video about this a year or two ago. Base saturation does play a role and it’s way to much to type here, but there are ranges and if for guideline purposes you had 65-75%Ca, 15-20%Mg, 3-5%K, gets you in a pretty good saturation zone. These can vary with soil type

Based on the general tone of the video, I would say that those doses of K helped strengthen your turf, short term. If you were/are(?) deficient, it will require more than just a season to get balanced. The prodiamine, for example, is only 7% K. If you put down 1 lb/1000 sqft, you are putting 0.07 lbs/1000 sqft. I’m pretty sure that if you are deficient, it is by more than that. 🤏🏼And a lot to unpack in a Comment. :) I get my tests from LCN.
@ammedsaavedra5296
@ammedsaavedra5296 4 жыл бұрын
@@goodrabbi7176 I do split applications of prodiamine in spring at 3 lb/1000 sqft for a total of 6 lb/1000 sqft. Thats .42 lbs K in spring. Then I do a Fall application of Dythopher which is (0-0-20) and I believe the bag rate on that is 3 lb /1000 sqft .6 lbs of K in fall. So I guess I am basically throwing down 1 lb in a season. I guess I am already doing what John is recommending. Spreading out my applications of K throughout the season. I am considering the Yard Mastery summer stress blend for my summer Fert application as its 7-0-20. But I also got some of that 9-0-1 GreenStart that I planned to use as my summer fert. Maybe 1.6 lbs K per season is too much?? Thoughts?

Have you actually had a previous soil test? Or will this be your first? How did you come to the conclusion that you are deficient?

Would you recommend mixing 0-0-29 acetate with a sop 0-0-53? .....Also how frequently should you be throwing down a 1/2lb of 0-0-53 if you have a K deficiency? Awesome video John. Great info.
@Lawncology
@Lawncology 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on how low you are and you wouldn’t need to do both at the same time but you could keep the acetate on hand for spraying at different or alternating times. A deficiency of 20ppm is 40lbs per acre or roughly 1lb per thousand.

If we get what you suggested in the video, the 5lb bag, is it 5lbs per 1,000 square feet? What would the rate be for that ...

Reiterating the importance of a soil test, I live in Eastern Iowa and have high Phos (P) but low Potassium (K). Per your map Iowa has sufficient K; however, that is not true for me. So while the map may be overall, on average, etc., it does not mean it's true for everyone.
@Lawncology
@Lawncology 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Many factors contribute to the native K load and whatever may be used as a medium for fill or soil load prior to growing turf on your property will absolutely affect the outcome.

Thank you. Ok, from a practical level how many lbs of potassium do you recommend for a lawn showing just below the ppm.. maybe give the dose needed for the full range of potassium levels in soils deficient in K..Assume the soil is clay and sand..thanks

Hi, I found 0-0-50 at local store but it had 2% chlorine in it. Does it effect anything. There are other granular fert 0-0-25 which has 25% chlorine. The reason I ask coz they sell stuff for pros and not sure if i can use the same on home lawn. Please advise. Thanks
@Lawncology

The 0-0-50 was sulfate of potash correct? This would be better than muriate of potash

Lawncology Yes, it says so. Below is the link to its label. www.siteone.com/pdf/sdsPDF?skuId=3783&resourceId=15732 I was wondering if that chlorine is ok for home lawns. Thanks a lot for your replies.

Kalyan V yes. You are totally fine with this. Chlorine is in high amounts in MOP and typically you would t see much if any in SOP. This is a good choice.
