Wow an impressive difference. Today I was looking at pictures and videos taken just 3 years ago of my daughter for her birthday .. there's an incredible increase in quality. So I can only imagine what another 3-4 years can bring.

If you use Filmic Pro with the flat or log profile you can even get better results, but yes, all else being equal, it appears that the Xs has better dynamic range. Also, as Sam Sheffer pointed out, the Xs also wider at the widest focal length on the rear camera. Nice to see Apple appears to be addressing the OIS issues when using a gimbal. I heard the Note 9 is good in low light.

Just take a moment and think about this- Before iphone Xs Max, the iphone X was the best of all, in terms of camera, audio, screen resolution, pixels, dynamic range etc... and when the new iphone came, the "almost NEW" slightly older iphone X is not good for video or photo.. I mean look at this video, look what the comparison is showing. Iphone X looks even bad than iphone 6 here. greatttt.. What the hell apple wants ? This reviews showed me that they just fake it everytime! Anybody noticed this?

Okay, this camera improvement is actually pretty solid. Wow. Thanks for the comparison. Interestingly with the audio, the XS Max sounded "fuller" but also had wind noise, where as the X seemed to be cutting that out. weird. Also Y U NO shoot videos ON the Arri Alexa while you have it?

Believe me I have the iPhone Xs Max and I took some pictures in a garden and wow!!! I’m still surprise I can’t believe that I took those pictures and I’m not a person who take pictures and now I want to take a lot of pictures with this phone lol

I think that’s because the X is only mono. So the mic is on one side (probably the side away from the wind in this case). The Xs records is stereo, 2 mics one likely copping all the wind.

Some review I watched (I think iphonedo) said Apple made the new sensor with bigger pixels to help with low light, and the review showed an image that had the sky and shadows both well exposed in the same shot as proof, looks like it was mostly an hdr trick rather than bigger pixels. Awesome video.

Thanks for this, PJ. The image quality (sharpness, colour saturation), and stability are a lot better on the XS, but I have to disagree with you about sound quality. The XS obviously lacks the kind of wind screen / pop filter that the other phone in your test has, and the audio is much clearer on the other phone.

👍🏼Wow, this was a very helpful side-by-side review! I've been on the fence to upgrade my iPhone X (barely a year old!), but I'm seriously considering it based on the improved camera... Any further thoughts on the "jello effect" stabilizer problem? Did Apple really re-engineer to prevent that? You said that it reduces it, but not eliminates it completely? Also, from your video, it appears that the X-max DOES fit in the Movi Cinema Robot, correct? It'd be great if you did an in-depth video/test just focused on the cameras and stabilizers for both cameras, by hand-held, gimbal usage, etc. (using Filmic Pro and other apps).
