The Gauls unique unit is not rendered obsolete by Swordmen. They aren't obsolete until gunpowder. They are quite capable of tanking hits from a Swordman if they heal each turn. Edit: Statue of Zeus also gives you 3 gold each turn. Which is not much on its own, but adds up over time.
@LAZERAK47V24 жыл бұрын
Feels more like a Defensive Wonder, as it makes it cheaper to produce Anti-Cav units as well (basically the melee counterpart to the Temple of Artemis). Anti-Cav units are rarely used on offense against the AI (might be different against humans, never tried it).
@Krishnath.Dragon4 жыл бұрын
@@LAZERAK47V2 Tried it once, it's a pretty decent wonder, both on Offense and Defense. I wouldn't discount the three archers it gets. It is usually enough to trigger the inspiration for Mercenaries and boost Machinery on its own. And it boosts your military score as well, making the AI less likely to attack. And that is beyond the +3 gold each turn, and the Era score from building a wonder.
@maulkin43874 жыл бұрын
Respectfully disagree. First off, your low base strength means you'll get obliterated by ranged units even in your own territory, unless behind fortifications. Being able to tank a swordsman in friendly territory is very small use, again it only helps if you want to turtle. And if you want to turtle it's best doing that after Renaissance if you've already set your self up for victory. Not during the ancient/classical eras where this unit is useful. That's the time you should look to expand and eliminate the most dangerous civs. Trying to turtle early on while (for example) Korea races to an unassailable science lead, is a recipe for disaster.

"Gaul is a culture Civ" earlier Production, combat bonuses, gets Culture from building combat units now that I think about it, Gaul gets the culture version of the Basilikoi Paides in every city for free
@ChessJew4 жыл бұрын
To my eyes, the culture boosts are fantastic early game bonuses. Their trajectory seems like: rush to Oligarchy, earn some living space with your boosted warriors, then settle down to simcity to diplo or science. Though they're a bit diplo nerfed since you can't place the Diplo quarter next to a city and it loses some value.
@MrTrellheim4 жыл бұрын
They're an early domination civ, really. The boosts for culture help you get the combat cards you need earlier and the gaeseate has a bonus attacking districts. Not sure what the long-term strategy for Gaul should be, though.
@ChessJew4 жыл бұрын
@@MrTrellheim Yeah, ideally you're improving as many mines as possible to rush to Oligarchy. After your early power spike is over, they seem destined for a Diplo or Science win. Religion doesn't work, and their mines and IZs probably steer them away from culture victories. I do wonder how much of an edge the Oppidum is - an Aqueduct/Dam/IZ triangle is an easy way to get great adjacency, and that's not open to them

I was really disappointed in my Gaul playthrough to find that mines do not provide tourism after flight. This was the main reason I played them to get a culture victory, and by the time I found out I was in too deep. Thankfully Voidsingers provide you with all the faith you will ever need to get naturalists and rock bands, plus the extra production meant I was swimming in wonders. Never mind bonuses from having a monopoly on great engineers for a lot of the game. Managed a bittersweet win in the end tho. Doubt tourism from their mines will be implemented, I'd like for there to be an update to the wording of the tourism from flight unlock to prevent this kind of false hope happening again. Yeh I only used this option once, I lost 2 cities in one turn both being in better locations than my cap and both went over to 2 other civs which practically ended my game. @gulfwulf35974 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know as well. The only two reasons I can think of are the extra gold cost and the scout's low combat strength. That and they quickly lose value unless you're at war with some who's spamming support units because Special Ops can attack them directly. Late game I just make army of them and have the go around and clear out barb camps.

@@gulfwulf3597 it's purely for the opportunity cost, i.e. the fact that you don't get something else from the goody hut instead. Since you already have a scout (or two, if you also built one yourself) getting another one is usually less useful in the long term than getting any of the other rewards
@gulfwulf35974 жыл бұрын
@@houndofculann1793 I can see that, but does that apply to scouts you build yourself?
@houndofculann17934 жыл бұрын
@@gulfwulf3597 not in the same way. A scout is the more valuable the earlier you build it because firstly, you haven't yet explored a lot, and secondly because you don't have as many things you can do with your city yet, so the opportunity cost for building the scout is smaller. Building a second scout right after another means it still has decent value because your first scout hasn't yet explored much, and you probably still haven't researched a lot of other options for you to use your production on so the opportunity cost is still relatively low. The longer you wait between the scouts, the smaller the profit will be relative to the opportunity cost as the former will decrease while the other will increase. For tribal villages, the opportunity cost is always the same (and pretty high because of all the other options), but the value of the scout will only go downwards. I hope this answer helps =D

The unique unit is such a brutal warrior replacement. 20 + 15 vs spearman and 5 more if barb with the right stuff giving you a 40 strength warrior before promotions and quick to make with no downsides. Early war is an option.

They are definitely a cultural civ in my experience. I've accidentally won on the same map type you're on because I unlocked flight with ludicrous amounts of mines everywhere

This is like me turning on the tooltip/advisor option field with the "McWhiskey" mod.

You think huey teocalli is worth this game? While there aren't many big lakes on this map there's quite a number of single tile lakes which would benefit from huey. As I was thinking about that you missed out on a likely boost to military tactics at around 19:10. It's understandable getting the boost wasn't exactly in the forefront of the planning there. It still happened at a poor time.

With the bonus production Gaul feels a lot easier than Byzantium. Production gives you the option to do anything you want. Byzantium needs a lot of things to line up and they pretty much have to go total war.
