PotatoMcWhiskey I’m late on this but I desperately need your advice. I found religions in 9/10 games without a problem just by a combo of holy site, pantheon and holy site project in the capital, as religion helps in any game, even if you don’t bother spreading it until later in the game. Then I get a good campus in the second city to get era score and use the GA dedication towards builders and settlers. And even with 3/4 great tall cities at the start I later on fall behind somehow... Should I just aggressively spawn archers and take out an AI in asap every game?..

Ikr, I think Peter and Mansa Musa are just a little bit better but just that safety of knowing you don't have to go straight to astrology is so game altering.....

gunzakimbo you don’t have to either way. I open through mining/animal husbandry (whichever is usable for craftsmanship boost) and hope to find a wonder by then. By about turn 30 I have a holy site, then go shrine and then holy site prayers (a coupe times if need be). This works 9 times out of 10 at least. But of course early astrology (if boosted), a shrine and Divine Spark are still the best to get a religion by about turn 40-50 effortlessly with 3 prophet point per turn. However it means not going earth goddess or not getting the settler. The choice is fully up to you tbh) Just playing Peter is the easiest with the Lavra getting 2 prophet points. Have 2 of those built early = having a religion

Nikolai Tregouet I agree that that can work (Like you said usually does) but then there are times when rushing straight to Astrology doesn't work fast enough. Highly agree Peter and Mansa Musa are probably my fav Religion civs.

I like it. So simple. I think many people ignore the Holy Site Prayers when they are actually really important. While this strategy slows down your early game, you will have a good mid game to snowball into the late game. Assuming you get that Medieval golden age and spam some settlements.

Ah, someone else who appreciates the Monumentality rapid expansion push! I’m not sure if classical or medieval is better though; you don’t have the faith income most of the time to really abuse it in the classical era, but waiting can cost you some potentially valuable city locations. I think you can even use it in the renaissance era, but that’s often too late to really matter (unless you exploit Serfdom and Ancestral Hall for a ridiculous amount of build charges for new cities).

i got a turn 172 great prophet on a standard size deity game a few weeks ago. i didnt even notice there were any religions left

My strategy for this, although it definitely doesn't work all the time, is to build 2 scouts. Aggressively scout out other civs and steal their workers (declare war then take the worker at the same turn before they can pull them back to the city). The workers are usually undefended and there are no penalties for doing this early game. Also the scouts can help discover a wonder making researching astrology that much easier. Then bring the workers back, buy tiles with woods and rush out the stonehenge by cutting down all the woods. Then, once I have the religion, make peace with all but 1 AI civ, build 3 archers and use the scouts, the archers and the warrior to conquer the final one before they get their walls up. Doing this gets me actually ahead of the other civs while also getting a religion.

I started my first Deity game yesterday... with Arabia.... where i received that last prophet while i was only producing like my 3rd or 4th unit around turn 30 and hadn't even had a chance to research the Holy Site yet. How are all Prophets gone that early??? Also how do you survive with only 1 slinger in the beginning? I had to produce like 3 slingers straight up because those barbarians sent 3 warriors and 3 slingers along with the spearman right off the bat

With the Secret Societies, you can substantially speed up the process if you can nab the Voidsingers early. The faith generation from your Old God Obelisks is faster and more reliable than the Holy Sites early on.

Warrior Monks might be a good religion belief if only it wasn't always the AI autopick. Basically, you have to go for Stonehenge and get it to win Warrior Monks. On a recent deity game, my first, I was able to make a declared friendship with an AI just as his army was approaching on my forward-settled city. It helped, too, that I had Russia and a lot of extra sight outside my city. (I won this game, and with a religious victory! I was so excited.)

What CIvs would you even recommend for a religious strategy? I tried it with Indonesia a bunch of times but I always end up behind so badly on deity that I just give up.

There wouldn't be an unoccupied tile on the map if every AI had the ability to spam religious units. The system is already annoying as is with this issue. I like going to for a religion for the benefits but it gets so dull dealing with AI spam.

Here's my religion build order from my most recent deity game: 1 - Spawn into the game 2 - Settle city, ideally 3+ stats in my city and 4+ on my first couple of tiles 3 - Find Mt. Roraima, immediately rush it (I often get my settler right after slinger like you do) 4 - Crank out another settler after a builder and some growth time 5 - Go for campuses, grab another settler at some point 6 - Oh wow I have just enough faith to buy a great prophet, but no holy sites 7 - Buy great prophet, *then* start working on a holy site 8 - Found 5th religion

Step 1: first turn research astrology and crank builders. Step 2: once astrology is complete build stonehenge. Use your builders to chop woods and accelerate the build. Voila. You dont need a holy site to get a prophet and you can sleep your prophet until whenever you feel like it and still get your religion. Step 3: build holy site, chop woods to speed it up.

@@PotatoMcWhiskey currently dueling saladin on deity with mali. Was able to speed build stonehenge and chain 2 golden ages back to back. Slumped a dark age 3rd round tho its tough to keep those going. If he sends faith units my way i just declare war, take my grievances, and take his faith units. It keeps them from getting religious victory.
