@@Nancy_Shorts13 you have to see the expression of potential at point P that was derived earlier. You need to see that here. The difference of R1 and R2 is used to define the potential. Similarly, when he derive the difference between R1 and R2 as two a cost theta, then he substituted the same in the earlier equation, thereby resulting in the main formula.
