This is great. I've been trying to teach myself butterfly for two weeks. Most of the videos give the impression that it is all power. I was plowing through the water like a dental drill through teeth. At the end of every 50 I'd be gasping for breath. This is what i need to do -- flow, relax, enjoy the sense of the wave, glide through the water. Butterfly is such a beautiful stroke to watch. But I was killing myself trying to imitate Michael Phelps.

This series on teaching the butterfly stroke is BY FAR THE BEST ONE I have ever seen! I have watched countless videos but none of them goes as in depth or as gradual as this one. All other videos only focus on techniques and timing, but this series goes beyond that and teaches and encourages us to use our senses and feel the flow of our body in the water. Best part is, now I can potentially swim the fly gracefully and not have to plow through the water like Pac-man and then run out of breath after 30 m. Thank you for the video series!!

Body balance 1. 6 00:00:31,880 --> 00:00:36,100 Arms trailing and head leading, gently drift into a glide, 7 00:00:36,180 --> 00:00:38,580 and tuck up to regain your feet 8 00:00:46,020 --> 00:00:52,080 These exercises with the arms trailing will help to develop your awareness of your head, neck, and torso. 9 00:00:57,020 --> 00:01:01,560 Breathe out gently through the mouth or a combination of the mouth and nose. 10 00:01:10,720 --> 00:01:12,860 2. Wave - arms trailing single leg beat 2. 11 00:01:13,000 --> 00:01:17,000 Practice a single beat first of all, to feel your way into the stroke. 12 00:01:18,560 --> 00:01:20,300 Allowing the head to lead, 13 00:01:20,400 --> 00:01:25,260 collapse the chest and actively press down, while releasing the lower back. 14 00:01:25,760 --> 00:01:29,380 The hips are driven upwards as the legs extend. 15 00:01:31,960 --> 00:01:35,460 Let the arms, wrists, and hands be relaxed and free. 16 00:01:38,460 --> 00:01:42,280 Let the upthrust of the water raise the head and upper body. 17 00:01:42,360 --> 00:01:45,780 The hips move forwards and knees release. 18 00:01:48,180 --> 00:01:54,580 Notice how the head rows, the eyes lead and there's an active pressing down motion through the torso. 19 00:01:56,360 --> 00:01:58,620 Avoid unduly arching the back. 20 00:01:59,200 --> 00:02:01,340 3. Wave - arms trailing double leg beat 3. 21 00:02:03,260 --> 00:02:09,000 Going a little deeper on the first undulation, allow space for a second smaller wave through the body. 22 00:02:11,840 --> 00:02:14,640 Avoid putting too much force into the kick. 23 00:02:16,780 --> 00:02:19,720 Enjoy a sense of the wave flowing through your whole body. 24 00:02:38,940 --> 00:02:41,020 4. Wave - arms extended 4. 25 00:02:41,820 --> 00:02:45,860 With arms extended, the undulation becomes a more propulsive motion. 26 00:03:00,860 --> 00:03:05,040 There's an active press down, followed by a gentle release and float up. 27 00:03:19,640 --> 00:03:20,440 5. Wave - on the back 5. 28 00:03:20,460 --> 00:03:27,000 Practicing the wave on the back is fun, and allows you to focus on your technique without the distraction of breathing, 29 00:03:31,090 --> 00:03:37,890 the more active movement of the head employed in the wave on your front, or replaced by cushioning of the head and upper body on the water. 30 00:03:44,190 --> 00:03:47,310 Explore undulating with arms trailing by your side, 31 00:03:47,420 --> 00:03:49,660 and with your arms extended behind your head. 32 00:04:05,020 --> 00:04:08,240 Relax and let the water cushion your head and upper body. 33 00:04:12,100 --> 00:04:17,320 Let your arms be free of tension and supported by the water in the extended arm position. 34 00:04:21,040 --> 00:04:25,860 Notice how the emphasis or effort with a dolphin leg action is on the upbeat.

@ijelev68, your complaints about arm movement being "incomplete" are, of course true. But - this is merely lesson one. You do not have to be a senior citizen to benefit from using less effort to swim further. Although I'm quite comfortable floating, doing this undulation action with my whole body is very tricky to do. I wish there was even more about how this whole body movement could be learned.

At 1:38, this guy also kicks by ending his knees. Is this right? I thought the whole undulation ought t come from the core and there should be no kick from the knee

There are some fine points especially in the body dolphin/undulation part, but generally it appears you've tried to adapt the stroke for senior citizens. Your volunteers look like they're drowning when trying to swim proper butterfly, the guy is simply in survival mode. The arm movement is totally wrong and incomplete, the leg action is shy and ineffective. Floating and swimming are different sports, for best results get a swimming coach, the DIY culture is not relevant in swimming.
