Potter for 50+ years. I've been seeing these "cheap" potter's wheels more and more recently. The big negatives I've encountered testing these kinds of wheels are: the wheel being very low to the ground, lack of responsiveness for wheel speed (even at low speed for the motor, rpms are too high), lack of torque (where the wheel slows down while centering or using all but the smallest amounts of clay), the wheelhead is small & no bat pins, & flimsy or no splash pan. The deal breaker for me is speed control at low speeds & lack of torque power. IMO just not worth the money, I'd recommend taking classes locally where a better quality wheel is available & you have a better experience learning. Access to quality tools & equipment leads to a much better learning experience and can guide one's equipment purchases. The wheel is just one aspect of making pottery, access to glazes & kilns to fire the ware are essential also. I completely get how expensive wheels are, but in my experience learn how to make pottery on the wheel before buying one (taking classes might give you experience on different models & types of wheels). At that point I believe the advantages of investing in a quality wheel become evident. I built my first wheel (kickwheel) and still have the first electric wheel I bought, I use both regularly.

All valid points! IMO, it’s not solely about the equipment, it’s also about the potter. You can do a lot with a little. A person can learn around the constraints and still be an incredible potter. I will always recommend taking classes but those can be pricey and the waitlists can be long. Studio memberships are pricey as well and can also be a time expense. So if someone’s sole intention is to just play with clay, I don’t think starting out with a $130 Amazon wheel and a $25 bag of clay is a bad idea. The plus side to the size of these Amazon wheels, they’re small and easy to have in a corner! I put mine on cinderblocks to elevate the wheel. Sure, the speed and is finicky and the torque can be weak but I’ve learned how to work around it at this point. As far as the wheel head, I use 10inch bats and a bat mate and it does the job. There are definitely creative solutions to any downfall imo!

6/10 because I think there’s still a lot of work around in order to make it work for me! I needed to elevate it and the foot pedal isn’t very useful, need to get a bat rug and bats that fit for the plate, etc. But! I still recommend to anyone who wants their own wheel but doesn’t have the 1k budget :) Hope your wheel worked for you!

What do you use for bats?

I don’t personally use bats right now since I don’t produce a lot! But I have been looking into the Hartley and noble system with a bat rug which I’ve seen other potters use.
