I am potter since1980 but still a beginner?. I have only watched your videos just recently. I am now watching you coloring slip and how to use this. I will be 87 this November and planning to keep this my hobby. You make it all look easy.

Pottery Crafters I've tried a few more casserole pots this week, it's good for me, now I'm trying strainers. Unfortunately I still have not succeeded. There is a vase next.

Wonderful! 🌻 Try to make the strainer thicker and trim the extra clay off if you need to like I did with the casserole dish when it's leather hard. Then make the holes.😍 Keep up the good work. Thank you for keeping me updated on your progress.💙

I love how you are not in a rush to get things done. When I slow and calm I get better results. It amazes me all the layers of glaze that can go on. When I put on one layer of clear glaze I got crawling, was said glaze was too thick. I don’t understand how that can be when I watch glazes go on layer after layer and all I see is gorgeous colour

Thank you Dawn. That's wonderful, plus it's more relaxing. 😍Good Question. First of all, you have to know which glazes like to run and which ones don't. The label will tell you. Like seaweed, so I always put it near the top. Also, it's best to put a hold of 2 to 5 minutes to allow the glaze to cure and a slow cooldown. I also use a cookie just in case.😆

Could I ask you a question about firing? So I understand that a piece gets fired twice. How long between firings? It there any minimum or maximum period of time?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 4 жыл бұрын
Good question Alexandra. 😀After your pottery has cooled down to room temperature you can start glazing. After glazing, I always wait at least 5 hours before I do a final fire to make sure all the layers of glaze have dried. 🌼

Hi! I was wondering if the unglazed "foot" of the mug would get stained over time? Doesn't it come into contact with tea/coffee in the mug and absorb some of the liquid? Is there any way to protect the foot from moisture and staining? I really love your videos. Thank you for explaining everything so thoroughly 😍
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question. Yes, and the unglazed areas can absorb water. Earthenware more than stoneware. It is best to trim the bottoms and make a foot so more of your mug can be glazed and insulated. The only time I do not trim the bottoms is when I wait too long and it's too dry to trim. 😀 If you look at the bottom of mass-made pottery it also has an unglazed area on the foot. In this video, I did trim the bottom. Here is the link if you would like to check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH62oqqNbpp-lcU I do hand wash my pottery and keep the bottoms dry. If you would like to glaze the bottom of your pottery this article may help. Here is the link for you. potterycrafters.com/how-do-you-glaze-the-bottom-of-pottery/ I hope that will help. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. 😊

Very nice, when I put that much glaze I seen to get run past the foot, I guess because our studio uses dip glazes. Ideas? Ps I love the ultimate foot tool you suggested!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. 💙 I applied two coats of toasted sage on the top and only one coat of Amaco Obsidian on the bottom half so the glaze won't run past the foot. I used bottled glaze for this piece. Hope this helped you to create a cool looking mug. Good luck. 😀

Thank you SO much, Marie, for your reply about your kiln model. And, I LOVE your kiln article, and did read it, but did not recognize the model of your kiln until you told me. May I ask how often do you usually fire your kiln? Also, I am hugely interested in how you decided to set up your pottery studio, too. It looks very efficient and inviting. Am I correct in that you are not a "production" potter, but that you simply enjoy creating ceramic pieces? Also, I LOVE your calm, clear videos. Each of your videos is super inspiring for a beginner like me. Again, thank you SO much for your time and talents with your videos. Also, I love your glaze choices, and seeing in your videos the holder that says "progress not perfection"

Thank you MaryJean, I fire about once a week. And you are correct, I am not a high production Potter but I do small scale selling for now. Thank you for inquiring about my Studio. I have an article I am working on right now about setting up your Pottery Studio that I think you will like. 😀👍

When did you remove the glaze from the mug topper before firing. Sure beats the waxing!
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortanily I had to put wax resist on. I don't like doing that step but it sure pays off, especially when using a glaze that can stain. I applied the wax resist at 17:50 in the video but did not show the part where I wiped it off. I wiped the topper off after the glaze dried. 😍
