I love this strange creature, very Pan. You did the eyes really well, eyes on ceramic sculpture can be a bit hit and miss. This creature has kind eyes. Watching you (and also Throwdown) has got me so enthusiastic for pottery again. I put it aside these last few years due to moving house a lot, and workshop time at my local pottery almost doubled in price, but now I'm confident to do my own thing and my first task back into it will be a set of feature tiles for my new house - thanks for your recent tiles video and all your content!

I guess black iron oxide will give you black or dark gray as long as there is some manganese included. DigitalFire did some experiments where some "synthetic" black iron oxides come out maroon. "Some form of manganese is needed to get an affordable black burning clay," they say.
