Such a fun video Mia, you must continue the series 🙌🏻 the Throwdown is filmed over several weeks, it looks like they make and fire in one weekend but they don’t. They film for around 30 days over 9-10 weeks.
@PotterytothePeople Жыл бұрын
Woooahh! Thanks for the info!!! Honestly after watching the second episode yesterday, I really started to question my weekend theory (they mentioned a 24-hour firing and I'm like... wait...) By chance, do you know how many days it takes to film one episode?
@ixchelssong Жыл бұрын
Ok... That makes a lot more sense! 😁😁😁 And I agree about continuing the series! ♥️
@ceramista28 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 24 hour firing AND Rose took the pieces out of the kiln with no gloves so there's another 24 hours at least....
@TheSeedOfChange Жыл бұрын
@@PotterytothePeople Ok, this is approximately how I think they film this show... Weekend #1- Throw/Build ALL episode 1 challenges. Weekend #2- Glaze All episode 1 challenges. Weekend #3- Film all episode 1 challenge reveals and judging AND Throw/Build episode 2 challenges. Weekend #4- Glaze episode 2 challenges. Some of these weekends might be 3-4 days if more drying time is necessary. In Between filming, the pieces are fired by the kiln keeper. In the first few seasons, it was the current judge Rich Miller who was in charge of firing. Also, keep in mind that some challenges only require throwing so there is no drying or firing time needed.

Maybe you can invite a previous contestant to be a guest on your channel and ask about all the logistics, I’d be so interested to know more about it!
@mmoolloo Жыл бұрын
Just so you know, the contestants in the show know what the challenges will be well before shooting and while they still have access to their own studios. This lets them design, plan and even practice their pieces in advance. AFAIK, they do throw / build the final pieces in the allocated time and in the show's studio, but problems like your leaves being too flat to leave an imprint can be ironed out in advance. (BTW, I do a lot of leaf imprints in my pottery, so I know the pain of finding a cool leaf to then find out that the veining is not raised enough).

The shows are designed so the viewer only gets a sense of tension, chaos, stress. That is what sells the show. I don’t really think it is that tense or chaotic when the contestants are making their items. They are in a time crunch but the stress is a built in media thing with tense music and video cuts giving a sense of that chaos. Chill and enjoy the process just like you are doing here. I learn a lot from your videos.

I loved watching you do this challenge. I’m a hand builder from the uk, and watch throw down every week. What you achieved over the time was amazing, how they do it without everything blowing up I’ve no idea. It takes weeks sometimes for my mugs etc., to dry slowly and evenly. Please do it again, but when you are fully better. Well done your concept was wonderful. ❤

I think every potter needs to take painting classes to learn basic painting techniques. I was an advanced artist before moving into pottery and it was a real advantage for painting the underglazes and such. Painting is all about learning the tricks, tips and just lots of practice.

Oh, you simply HAVE TO continue with this series. I love the TV programme and always thought it would be so intriguing if my teacher gave us challenges. Obviously not those big ones (that would simply not be feasible in a once-a-week course), but maybe some blind throwing challenges or time restricted ones. And it’s great to see you do some of this, too.

20:00 yes, they film the show at the weekend. But it’s not necessarily all the same weekend. I think they are required to go in the evening as well. I’m sure I saw one where it said “three days later”. But obviously during covid they did leave their homes and families to stay at the place, which made their friendship with each other and the emotional connection with the judges stronger, as they would’ve all been socialising and eating their meals together.

Wonderful work! Your “asking a hella lot comment” is apt. Much of the issues with cracking on the show amount to drying clay too quickly. And they get explosions in the kiln for exactly the kind of reasons that you mentioned. I’m shocked your cake stand didn’t crack; I’ve made them that way and cracking at the foot is an issue with that style of construction.

So much fun, I'd love to see more! I don't understand why they would have the contestants make a full cake slicer in pottery. Making a ceramic handle for a metal cake slicer would make more sense. I agree with you on the green glaze, especially on the cake stand. I think the color the green came out as more of a dull olive color, rather than a bright leaf color. Needs to be a brighter green, but that's so hard to tell before you fire it. And perhaps a darker green antiquing on the leaf textures, to catch just in the veins and make them stand out more.

The trick is to throw 1/4” thick, use very little water. Have good compression and let them dry uncovered. Run small coils along the handle joints and smooth. Then, dry them in your home oven at 200 degrees F with the door cracked, no need to candle and wreck your elements. The handle cracked and the strawberry foot didn’t work because they were not secure. Sand before you bisque (better to smooth with fingers)

hi:) I've been binge-ing Pottery Throw Down, to catch up on a few years I hadn't watched. I get the impression that they do take about a week per episode - they refer to 'this week has been...', and they sometimes go home for a couple days while their work is being fired, etc, so that means they would come back to decorate, then I suppose come back the next day for judging? I'm not sure, but that's the impression I get. Obvs, you are allowing for not having a drying room, etc. I must say, you seem very professional - you work quickly, neatly and consistently (from what I can tell - I'm not a potter - just dabbled many years ago - but would still love to get my own equipment one day - then will defs check out your channel for some help:) ). Anyway, I'm chuffed that someone else is as obsessed as I am with this tv programme! lols
