I love this. I just started learning about gardening and it amazes me to see my plants growing. I spent a fortune on my backyard and plan to attack the front yard next year. In the meantime, I’ve started propagating the Danica arborvitaes that I have in my backyard. It’s so exciting!

I’m so happy I found your channel! I’m in Athens, Tennessee and I’ve tried twice now to root my arborvitae with no luck! I’m going to follow this exactly! Thank you so much!

Hi Amber, thanks for watching! I hope the video helps! Just remember if it doesn't work, keep trying! Pay attention to what didn't work and make adjustments as you go. :)

I took a bunch of clippings from emerald greens, I used rooting powder and planted directly in a protected area (in between much taller evergreens) after last frost. I plan to spray them daily .. limited sunlight. Think I have a chance ? Which part of this is no good ? Thanks, Ron

I think you do have a chance! Just make sure they don't dry out between watering. Usually my failures are when I accidentally let something dryout.

I like the tray idea .. did you cover them over the winter or take them inside ? I have 4 emerald donors that I'd like to propagate in many. I'm in CT so the growing season is just starting. Appreciate advice.

In our area I don't cover them but I probably would in CT. You're winters will be harsher than here in TN. I left them outside. If brought indoors it might trigger growth on the leaves before they get far enough along to create roots.

I am so impatient, how much growth per year should I expect?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 3 жыл бұрын
Once established you could expect about 2 to 3 feet per year depending on the variety. It may take a year or so before they get established though.

When would you start to shape them, or do they naturally grow in that cone shape?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 3 жыл бұрын
They will grow naturally into that form but you could do a little corrective pruning as they grow. Probably in the second year or so.

I just did 1 and it has roots; do the cuttings grow into a full tree over time or will they only grow aa big as a branch would have?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
They are genetic clones of the original tree and should have all the traits it would. So it will grow into an arborvitae just like the original.

How many weeks did it took for them to root out?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
They probably began rooting around 10 weeks or so. Depending on conditions you could expect 2 weeks in either direction. They can take longer. As long as the plant is still green and alive with no signs of rotting you can leave them to root.

How long does it take for them to grow? I planted 110 green giant seedlings 12 to 15 inches in October so far they haven't grown any.
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 3 жыл бұрын
In the winter they will grow under the soil a little but it is slow. Once they are established you will see a faster growth rate. They can grow as much as 3 ft in a year depending on the variety. Just baby them and give them some time this year. Sounds like a big privacy screen!

@@Growingthehomegarden Thank you for the reply. They have been a lot of maintenance so far, but it will be worth it to have the privacy. We have 12 acres so I stretched them across one of our fields. Weeds and unwanted grass have been another battle. I recently added new mulch this time putting newspaper down first.

They will be tough to keep weed free for a while until they grow taller and can shade the base of the plants. Newspaper and mulch sounds like a good approach for now. Cardboard will help too.
