I just found your channel and your passion for propagating Green Giants is infectious! I found you because my 5-6' green giants, which I planted in mid Fall, seem to be dying, and I really feel I can bring them back to life because they are such hardy plants. You have given me hope! I don't understand what happened to them. They looked fine in March, but once they started waking up in April, half of them have turned yellow. I'm actually considering propagating cuttings to replace them, but my wife wants me to buy new ones. I don't know what to do. Your videos prove these things should be growing like crazy, which is why I bought them.

Hi Mike, I planted 80 of these trees on the 11th of this month. I watered them thoroughly the planting day and over the past week they have received over 3-4 inches of rain. Although most of that was quick 30-40min downpours. I noticed that some of the tips of the "leaves" are turning brown/yellow. Should I be concerned? Maybe I should be watering more by hand? I was going to mulch and add some 10-10-10 fertilizer hoping that would help.
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
Don't do anything drastic. It's hard to diagnose without seeing them but I'm fairly confident that it's just the move from a different climate. When I purchased my original 100 of these, they came from Florida to a much cooler climate and immediately started turning bronze and going into dormancy. About a month or so later they started waking up and doubled their size by the end of summer. Don't try to force anything, just let nature take its course. Mulch is your best bet, don't over-fertilize, and don't let them dry out the first summer. Good luck.

@MikeKincaid7911 ай бұрын
They definitely need to be protected if they just came from Florida. Get them through the winter, water only as needed to keep the pots slightly moist, wait until spring to fertilize. They should be dormant right now. I’d just protect them in your greenhouse until spring, but don’t heat the greenhouse. Allow the plants to stay dormant until your growing season starts. Hi Mike, do you think after moving rooted cuttings to 2-gallon pots in the spring, and letting them grow through the summer, that they could survive as containerized trees during a New England winter? Or is a hoop house mandatory?
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the cold hardiness of the plants but you would definitely have a better chance doing what you said and letting them get established in the pots all summer. Also, green giants are way more prevalent on the east coast and do even better in colder climates like you have so I think these plants would be ok without a hoop house. That being said, I don't have any personal experience in your climate zone so I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction. I do know that a lot of fig people over there store their figs in their garage during the winter and that's enough protection for them so I know it would be more than enough for landscape plants like green giants. Hope that helps.

I was waiting for this video ! Btw don’t you think you plant them so little far ?
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
These plants will get 12 foot wide at the base eventually so they're planted close enough together. I also wanted to make sure that each plant's roots had room to grow.
@shinnersplit88165 жыл бұрын
Mike Kincaid i agree. but how long they need to be 12 foot wide ?
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
I would guess it's going to be over 10 more years before they're that big.

Rhododendrons are always on topic! I do not ship them but you can check out Van Veen Nursery in Oregon, they do ship.

I call them neighbor haters. Watch them grow. Remember they dont like wet feet much and if your bottom dies off its gone. Thank you

I'm sure there are many opinions on the subject. I spent a lot of time reading and planning to arrive at my decision. So far, I like the decision.

Would you consider selling me about 100 fresh small cuttings off your trees right now since they are still dormant? I’ll do all the rest when they arrive here! 👍

You've planted them too close to Rhododendrons
@MikeKincaid795 жыл бұрын
On purpose. That's a really hot area that gets a lot of sun and the green giants will do great there. As the green giants get bigger, the rhododendrons will grow out away from them and show on the inside of the hedge where I want to see them. I'm sure in 20 years, some of the rhododendrons in that area will become completely smothered and die but I've got plenty more planted further inside the hedge. It will all make sense in 20 years, or at least it does in my mind, lol.

Thanks. I brought. I am very interested in breeding this species and do not understand your language. Please help me get some information. You have just finished building the greenhouse. 1 What is the best time? 2 What is the temperature? Greenhouse Ground and Air 3 What humidity level do you need?
@MikeKincaid79 Жыл бұрын
1. The best time is in the early spring, right before the trees break dormancy. 2. The temperature around the roots just needs to be about 10 degrees F. warmer than the ambient air. 3. I don't use a lid for hardwood cuttings like these, so the humidity is the same as the outside air.
