All great tips! A lot of kiddos are successful with having a routine of when they have a chance to try on the potty. So at school, we would typically have them try before meals and snacks (since they're going to be in there washing their hands anyway), before and after going outside, and before and after nap. For the older kids still finalizing the transition, this was often enough, but it also gave them a chance to know and have queues of when they need to try. With the younger kids, it may help to add in a couple of extra times on the potty. But using transitions kids know, like nap, meal, etc, can be easier for the children to remember and look forward to than something like an hour or 30 minutes.

Thank you for this! Such great tips, I’ll be sure to use them now that my daughters are 12 months! Really quick, “vagina” isn’t the correct word to use for what body part expels urine, it’s the urethra, and the vulva is the outer part which your child will see most recognizably.

I simply meant as a way to differentiate the male and female parts. Girls - vagina, Boys - Penis. But yes, you can definitely go into detail and explain the functions of the urethra and the vulva, especially if your child is interested or curious.

Thank you for sharing all this information, I really appreciate! My toddler is 16 months now, she does poo in the potty from 6 months (it was easiest that way after we started solid foods) and from 15 months she doesn't pee through the night and during her nap time, but she didn't ever try to take her pants off. I started to tell her about peeing in the potty (and I put her on the potty every morning) and now she does the sign for poo when she also need pee, but she's already starting to pee when she does the sign. Is she ready or not? Should I continue to put her on the potty when she needs (it's also a time consumer, because she stays like half of hours everytime she needs because she loves book whes she's on the potty, with poo it was only half hour per day, but with pee it's a lot of time through the day)?

Revisiting this now that we're in the thick of it! We are facing the issue that our kid has almost all the necessary signals and physiological abilities, but refuses to sit on the potty. We just don't know how to get past this...🙈🙈🙈

I would place the potty in an area where they’re comfortable, even if it’s not going to be the official potty area. If they have a favorite show they like to watch, perhaps place it there and sit next to the potty and see if maybe they’ll come and sit on it as they watch their show. If you have a reading book, place the potty there so they can sit and read a book. You want them to feel comfortable and safe on their potty, but more importantly you want them to become familiar with seeing it daily. Start with the lid down (if it has a lid) then show them that the lid goes up and that you can sit on it with the lid up. Take your time, be patient and never rush or force. They’ll be ready when they’re ready. I hope that helps ❤️

Great tips! My daughter is 13 months but she's not ready to go potty but at least I should introduce her to the idea. She goes to the toilet with me all the time but she doesn't understand what I'm doing.

Introducing the idea early on by having her join you is a wonderful start. I suggest talking to her and explain everything you’re doing as you’re doing it. That will help her make the connection sooner ❤️
