I love how you talk about replacing the binding at the hem and being able to adjust sizes if need be. I know that's how the cared for their garments "back in the day", but it is refreshing in the ocean of fast fashion that some people treat their garments with care. It's inspiring me to be more considerate of this as I slowly start to make my own clothes. And thank you for a good tutorial!

I googled 'cartridge pleats' and found myself here. Thanks for the detailed explanation of the process and the historical overview. I am from Nigeria and cartridge pleats don't catch out women's fancy here. African contemporary is in vogue here and because it has a lot of gathering, like cartridge pleats, I thought incorporating cartridge pleats instead of the usual gathering would definitely be a welcome development, ancient and modern sort of. ❤ Thanks for your time. Initially, I thought the pleated fabric would be sewn to the waist band or bodice. Now I know it's hand stitched.

How beautiful that was. I really enjoyed watching it, and it took me back to when I was little and we wore dresses, hand smocked by our mother. The smocking adds something really special. Please could I make a request? Please don’t add music to videos when you’re teaching because if anyone like me has a cognitive disability, it’s very painful. People will comment and tell me to mute, but of course I then live my whole life in silence! I enjoyed your teaching and I didn’t want to miss it. If people really like music, they can add music of their choice, but I can’t subtract it. Hope it’s OK to ask - I don’t find many videos where there’s no added music, but the ones I do, are peaceful and contemplative, which is a lovely thing in this noisy frantic world! Bless you ❤

Beautiful! I had some lovely cartridge pleated items growing up doing reenactments and living history of the early to mid Victorian era... Yes, you can use 150 cm fabric😊I wouldn't cut down the fabric (unless you're working with a heavy fabric like wool) as a 3 panels of 150 cm wide fabric will have a lovely swish!

When machine stitching a hem facing, there are ways to prevent a horizontal line of stiches. Use a blind hem stitch. It looks like a weird zig-zag with some going wider. To use this you sew most on just the folded facing, but the tips of the wider zigzags go into the skirt fabric. The result is hardly noticable little pricks of thread on the outside. If the threadcolour matches, its really hard to see. I would recommend practicing first, but its fast once you get the hang of it

Love those skirts. Will have to do some testers on fabrics to see how much I'll need and how small to make the pleats. It seems like you did about a 4.8 multiplier of waist size to fabric. With a larger waist, I'll need more fabric to get those beautiful pleats.
@Pour_La_Victoire8 ай бұрын
If you're working with a thicker fabric like wool, you can get by with fewer pleats due to the thickness of the material. That ratio sounds right - I think adding an extra half panel or panel of fabric is a great idea.

Perhaps your fabric was lightweight enough that it scrunched up really tight when you pulled the gathering threads? I recommend pulling the gathering threads to fit your waistband. This video came just when I needed it! Thank you for sharing these techniques. Do you know whether cartridge pleated skirts can be done on a curve, rather than just on a straight edge? I am planning to remake an 1850s dress that dips in the center of the waist, and as the entire skirt is cartridge pleated, I will need to make the pleated front curve down into the center ‘dip’, but cartridge pleating along a curve / bias sounds tricky. Do you have any advice for this? Thank you in advance!
@Pour_La_Victoire8 ай бұрын
Thank you ❤️ Yes, you can use this method for 1840s and 1850s skirts with a dip in the center front! You'll just have to fold the fabric down more at the center front and taper towards the side seams. For example, if your CF bodice point extends 3 inches past the bodice back bottom edge, fold the CF of the skirt down 6 inches and taper to 3 inches towards the side/back of the skirt. Kinda hard to explain, but I have photos of this with my blue 1840s dress on my blog. Feel free to message me on IG if you want to see extra photos.
