Why skip the Franks and Clovis? They are the namesake and founders of France, and Clovis is the Germanic name that became Louis after all.

It is weird it is skipped here because for some French people Clovis marks the founding of their country. But that is basically just French-Catholic propaganda. Saying that the Frankish kingdom under Clovis was the founding of France has always been a stretch. It was more so a predecessor to France. They also are not Frankish. The French are basically Gallo-Romans who had a Germanic ruling class for a few centuries. But the people, language and culture as such were never Frankish Still you are right, it is weird to skip because the Franks do lay the foundation for France as a state (especially the Karolingians and West Frankia). Even if the French aren’t a continuation of the Frankish people (those would be the Dutch, a part of the West Germans, Luxemburgish and technically even the Afrikaners)

You began ill, because you began by despising everything that belonged to you. You set up your trade without a capital. If the last generations of your country appeared without much luster in your eyes, you might have passed them by and derived your claims from a more early race of ancestors. Under a pious predilection for those ancestors, your imaginations would have realized in them a standard of virtue and wisdom beyond the vulgar practice of the hour; and you would have risen with the example to whose imitation you aspired. Respecting your forefathers, you would have been taught to respect yourselves. You would not have chosen to consider the French as a people of yesterday, as a nation of lowborn servile wretches until the emancipating year of 1789.” - Edmund Burke, Reflections on the French Revolution

France was really born under the Karolingians though. It specifically comes out of West Frankia. Though the original Frankish Kingdom under Clovis can be seen as a sort of predecessor to that. And there is a lot of Merovingian history in Northern France particularly
@camelotduroy1168 Жыл бұрын
@@sebe2255 well officially, France's birth is December 25, 496. It is considered in France that the kingdom of France was just France with an older name, but still the same country, under the merovingians/carolingians, and that it is the two other frankish nations, middle and east frankia (futur Italy/Luxembourg and Germany) which separated other time but the original kingdom always was West frankia as Clovis was the first to make Paris capital. Also the title eldest daughter of the church was given to France and that us inherited from Clovis directly
@sebe2255 Жыл бұрын
@@camelotduroy1168 Officially? There is no real officially in this case. You can make an argument for why you can maybe consider it to be France, but those are usually ridiculous The original kingdom was never West Frankia, it was just The Frankish Kingdom. Which underwent plenty of changes over the course of the centuries that it existed. France as such comes directly from West Francia, and not the Original Frankish kingdom. Also, East Frankia became the Roman (later Holy) Empire in the west again, reviving the Imperial title that was initially inherited by middle Frankia but went defunct. East Frankia doesn’t lead to Germany in the same one-to-one way that West Frankia leads to France. Luxemburg is also not the successor of Middle Frankia but just one if the many Duchies that came out of the break-up of Lotharingia But yes, Clovis invading Northern Gaul doesn’t automatically lead to “France.” The merging of Gallo-Roman and Frankish elite and the adoption of the French language by the Franks that settled in Gaul is a process that would take centuries. The Merovingian Kingdom of the Franks is a predecessor to France, but they weren’t French at all. That wouldn’t exist for centuries to come. They just set the process in motion
@camelotduroy1168 Жыл бұрын
@@sebe2255 I did it simple for understandability but I get your point for Middle and East Frankia. Yet you cannot deny that the ancestral capital of Paris was kept by West Frankia, as well as the title of Eldest Daughter of the Church. Also, all merovingian artefacts belong to the kingdom of France, so we are the true heirs of Clovis. Clovis is the first king of France according to every single genealogy of the Kings of France, and only the kings of France could get sacred, not crowned like other kings. And only the french kings could do so in the Cathedral of Reims, where Clovis was baptised. So, it is pretty clear that the start of France is with Clovis as everything about the french nation derives from his baptism
@sebe2255 Жыл бұрын
@@camelotduroy1168The French kings liked to claim that continuity, just like the Holy Roman Emperors liked to claim direct continuity with Charlemagne. But neither was actually a case of direct continuity. Also, Turkey is the home of many ancient greek cities and artifacts. But that doesn’t mean that they are a direct continuation of the city of Troye either. Obviously the Merovingian artifacts are mostly in what is now (key word being now) France. But back then it would have been the Frankish Kingdom, France and French identity and culture didn’t exist. These were Germanic warlords who just ruled over the people that would become the French

Charlemagne spoke old german, this kills the frenchie.

Charlemagne was bilingual, he spoke an old German dialect and also a Gallo-Roman (old-old French) dialect spoke by most of his Carolingian and Merovingian ancestors. So despite what the German propaganda want you to believe, Charlemagne was the incarnation of mixed French-German emperor and his dual culture is what makes him interesting.
