👣 Step-by-Step Guide:
1️⃣ : Clean the Metal Objects
The first step to a successful powder coating job is to clean the metal objects thoroughly. Use a degreaser to remove any oils, grease, or other contaminants from the surface of the metal. Rinse the objects thoroughly with water and let them dry completely.
2️⃣ : Preheat the Objects
Preheating the objects helps the powder to adhere better and can prevent common issues like sagging or wrinkling. Place the objects in an oven or other heat source and heat them to the recommended temperature for the specific powder you are using.
3️⃣ : Apply the Powder
Once the objects are preheated, it's time to apply the powder. Load the powder coating gun with the material and adjust the settings to the recommended levels for the powder you are using. Place the objects in the powder coating booth and apply the powder in even, overlapping passes. Make sure to coat the objects thoroughly and from all angles to ensure an even, uniform finish.
4️⃣ : Bake the Powder
Once the objects are coated, they need to be baked to activate the curing process. Place the objects in an oven or other heat source and bake them according to the recommended time and temperature for the specific powder you are using.
5️⃣: Cool and Inspect the Objects
After baking, let the objects cool completely before inspecting them for any missed spots or defects. Touch up any areas that need attention, and then you're done!
By following these steps, you can easily powder coat at home and get professional results. Keep in mind that powder coating can be a bit tricky to master, so be patient and practice to get the best results. Remember to always use protective gear and work in a well-ventilated area to ensure your safety.

I'm defiantly gonna get into this. I highly recommend getting away from paper towels. they will leave residue. you can use muriatic acid for rust removal, but do your homework on that process it is mildly dangerous. Nice video!

Nice vid! You could connect the ground to a magnet like they do for welding and then stick that on the side of the piece that will not receive powder.
@DrSidewayZ
@DrSidewayZ 10 ай бұрын
So some parts are non ferrous so honestly using the little clawed grounding clamp is ideal while a magnet may work the ionization of the air may attract to the part differently then if you’re welding

Is sand blasting comparable with the vapor honing? Trying to get into powder coating and want to know what I need.
@DrSidewayZ
@DrSidewayZ 5 ай бұрын
Yeah you can achieve a finer finish with vapor hone and it’s less dusty but industry standard is to sandblast prior to powder coat

Super simple, but still not practical. Unless you do multiple part regularly, it's still less hassle to have someone else do it. You may pay more, but you have no setup, no proprietary tool you will never use again, and you drop off and pick up your part. If you factor in having to to get an oven and mask then it's cheaper to have it does by a pro.
@DrSidewayZ
@DrSidewayZ Жыл бұрын
My oven was free, the gun was $159, you can get by using a wire brush and sander for parts, my mask was $23, some of us can’t afford taking our stuff to “pros” whom want to charge $200+ for a power steering pump that is less the 5x5x5 requiring it to be disassembled and cleaned prior. It’s honestly a joke tbh i understand having a business but it doesn’t justify highway robbery.

How about just not being lazy. I think this young man has a proactive mindset and a bright future ahead. I own the same gun and bought my setup with similar ideas in mind although I utilize mine to powder coat cast lead bullets. I can pick the colors I want, vary the thickness at will, do it at my convenience or rush, once I buy the powder, I have plenty to coat other items. I have been using mine to make custom powder coated aluminum cups for people I know. I take the tops of regular soda pop cans, use high temp tape to lay out simple designs, and blast away. I get $10.00 per coated can that I paid $0.50 plus another $0.50-$1.00 for powder. Just when it seems I won't ever need/use it again, I have someone ask me to do some powder coating. It was a very small investment that has already paid for itself several times over. Just the powder coated bullets has already saved me money on bullet lube, chemicals and patches to clean the lead out of my barrels...not to mention my labor plus I can now recover 90-95 percent of my lead after firing due to the bright colors. Try paying someone to go recover your raw lead bullets from a hillside...
