We can use an internal 2,5'' HDD as external, but using SATA and feeding it with a USB cable instead a power supply. I.e. we can edit a complex video project (Premiere, Final Cut Pro, etc.) in different computers without copying it to the local hard disk. If the HDD were a 2,5'' USB one, we couldnt edit with it, because USB is very slow compared to SATA.

I dont know what it could be. Perhaps is a power issue that the USB port doesnt offer the needed power. Do you do this with the power supply (charger) connected?

I tried to do it but the external drive does not show in My Computer. It will just show i restart my pc..It would be better if it will autoplay once you plug the drive just like the usb..

Perhaps it is hasnt enough power. Have you tried it with the laptop plugged to the mains?

Perhaps if you cut one of the it works ok, but it is better to use both because you dont know if in some connectors one of them doesnt exist.

ok, what if I have 3,5'' HDD and want to connect it to my laptop/pc to USB? Power from USB is not enough to run it, how do I do it then? (I tried 1 USB, so... or how to connect HDD SATA disk to usb with external power supply? - dunno what cords/etc need to buy)

By the way! There is not a bad option Docking Station (with RAID function), 5 pieces of hard. With a total volume of up to 40 TB. Support for hot-swappable. (Ie, during operation, you can get any hard drive). Description here: videovsvet.blogspot.com/

BTW my usb-molex cable is not thick like the one in video , i took the usb cable from a broken mouse and it was easy to identify the v+ g d+ d- it was wrote inside the mouse , is it problem that the cable is not thick?

Because 3.5 ones need more power. They need also 12V. I copy this comment from zenabir21: "a 3.5" hard drive needs the yellow cable which gives off 12v. but usb can only give 5volts so it wouldn't work. you'd need a 12v power adapter and do the same thing.:)"

I tried the exact same method on my WD Internal HDD. But it keeps disconnecting after every 1 minute. What can be the problem? The soldering is correct and so is the SATA Cable.

WHATS THE POINT, WHEN THAT SAME POWER IS IN THE PC?AND YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE PC TO PREPARE THE SATA CABLE, THE POWER CABLE IS THERE TOO, WHY ARE YOU CUTTING THE WORKING POWER SUPPLY AND MAKING IT EXTERNAL USB? sorry for caps lock, not yelling, but not typing it all again either :)

Only if the drive requires it. Most 2.5" Drives only require 5v to operate (which is why you can get USB powered external drives) .

No doesn't work... a 3.5" disk requires +5V and +12V power, and usb doesn't supply 12V, and also the power of an usb port, even a usb 3.0 port is not enough for a 3.5" disk, those disk requires a lot more power, even for some 2.5" disk the power of an usb 2.0 port is not enough, those need at least 2 usb 2.0 or one usb 3.0 port.
