Would it be possible to provide the icons directly or through a different method that doesn't involve pasting a URL?

Hi yes you can also import icons as image files and then reference them directly. The only thing is you won't be able to dynamically change its colors and it won't scale as well as svgs

What's stopping Microsoft from actively offering us several thousand icons, it would be so much simpler ? Or at least let copilot generate icon based on prompt
