One of the best looking bowls I have seen on YT...my opinion. Good simple design and easy to follow your progress. You have a great eye for design as can be seen on your other work too. Keep it up and load more. Thanks!

I've been considering getting into power carving as a hobby to scratch that hands on creative itch I've been having. I came across your videos in the research process and got even more excited about this endeavor. Your review videos gave me the information I needed to insure I did this right. I look forward to completing my first bowl (unless there is something else you would recommend for a novice to start with). Either way.... Thanks.

Awesome! Makes me really happy to hear that Ii might've encouraged you if even in just a small way. A bowl could be a nice start and people seem to really like wood bowls! Really though, more than what project to start on, the big thing is just to start. Have fun, get a feel for whatever tools you have available and have at it. Practice on cheap wood, have fine and don't put pressure on yourself to make a perfect piece right out of the gate.

No problem, Mike! It's a pretty cool tool. You might find abortech's channel helpful. They have a bunch of demo videos including how to it and how to sharpen it really easily. Also in a week or two I'm going to do a video where I show all the different tools I've experimented with for power carving, from budget to expensive.

my tip of the day is if you cut the bowl out of the template after carving the bowl set your band saw blade to about 30% angel then you good to just sand and not have to then recave the outter edge. also i cut the outter 1st so you can feel the depth of the bowl as you carve the inside out. so outside 1st inside 2nd.

The Salad Bowl finish is exactly the same as their regular varnish. people got wigged out with the whole Varnish/Food thing...so they re-labeled the can. I used to use Salad bowl finish as well until I found out that fact from one of their salesmen.
@BradleyMakesThings6 жыл бұрын
Yeah - after I used it I looked at the can a little more closely and realized it’s just a thinned down poly. That’s why it says not to use it for cutting boards and the like because you could ingest flakes of finish since it’s a film finish. After I finished the bowl for the video I found some more scratches so I had to sand it all back, and ended up with a Beezwax/mineral oil finish which I use for most of my food stuff. I did switch from that to making my own finish from organic Beezwax and organic toasted walnut oil though to get the most natural finish possible for those who would be wigged out with synthetics. I personally don’t have a huge issue with them, but enjoy using the wax/oil finishes for ease and also enjoyed making my own.
@Splash1116 жыл бұрын
Beautiful bowl by the way...absolutely beautiful. . Nice job. The wood whisperer says that he dilutes tung and puts one coat on to help seal the fibers...then finishes with mineral oil/beeswax thin after the tung dries. . I have used diluted tung oil on gun stocks..... 25% and 75% mineral spirits to get more penetration and it works really nice. I then go to a 50%/50%.....then 75 % tung / 25% mineral spirits, then finish with 100% Tung. I just tried my first cutting board with 25% T / 75% MS then finished with beeswax and mineral oil. so far so good. Keep up the great work.

Awesome bowl carter! Cant afford the Festool RAS 115 sander - is it hard bottomed? And is the only way you could sand the inside of the bowl, becuase the sandpaper overlapped? (Im trying to find something to sand the inside of bowls with, right now Im using a drill with 2 inch pads which isnt ideal as the drill is tiring to hold) - Can you advise?

Nice bowl and great vid. I been traditional hand carving and then power carving, on and off, here in the uk for 35 years and I'm getting back into it after accidentally becoming a builder for a few years! I think the arbortech industrial blade is much quicker for initial roughing out, then the turbo plane for refining the shape before sanding. I have recently got the arbortech ball gouge, which i at first thought was a bit of a gimmick, but it is great for undercutting and doing smaller bowls and hollow forms, and if used gently and carefully, can create a texture that can pass for hand gouge tool marks (after a light sanding) . Do you use this attachment? It's slower than the discs of course, but is a great addition to my power carving arsenal! Keep up the good work, be safe and have fun : )
@BradleyMakesThings7 жыл бұрын
+Jules Webb Thanks for the tip, Jules! I actually have a blade similar to the arbortech industrial that I’ve been asked to review called the DBX cutter - has round carbide replaceable blades like the industrial but has 6 instead of two. Hoping that works out well! There’s also the chainsaw style blades the likes of the Lancelot by King Arthur Tools which I have, but because it’s so easy to overdo it in power carving I actually don’t mind the extra time the turboplane takes. We’ll see how it compares to the DBX cutter though.
@juleswebb18857 жыл бұрын
Carter Wilson Workshop you're right carter, it is easy to over do it with the discs! I look forward to your review of the dbx cutter, although it may not be available here in the uk. Keep the vids coming, as I'm doing similar work to you at the moment !
@BradleyMakesThings7 жыл бұрын
+Jules Webb The new DBX cutter I’m talking about actually comes from the UK. :) I’m going to be posting a review of it in the next week or two, as well as a video of a walnut trench bowl I hope to use it on.

to Carter W...; what is corner sander that you use? it's very good to take by a hand !
@BradleyMakesThings7 жыл бұрын
+Thuan Duong I'm not sure which you're talking about - if it was earlier in the video it's the Festool RAS115. If it's later in the video, it's the Festool RO90. Both are great sanders. For the RAS115, you can do something similar by adding a resin fiber sanding disc to a variable speed grinder.

Do you skip the drying process? Does it warp or crack?
@BradleyMakesThings8 жыл бұрын
I was using wood that was already dry so there were no issues there. There was a little warping in the boards before I glued them up from the drying process, but I corrected that with the jointer and planer before glue up. I haven't done any green wood carving so I've not had really any issues with warping or cracking.

@BreeXD45C8 жыл бұрын
At 1:26 and following you do something incredibly dangerous. You are cutting the inside slope of the bowl with the cutter head facing your body. Your shirt and body are way too close to the spinning blade. What would happen is that it would grab your shirt pull it in and start wrapping it around the shaft and pull you into the blade. In an instant it would wrench the entire unit right out of your hands and you would be seriously injured. And the angle grinder doesn't have a momentary switch so it will keep running though you are no longer controlling it. You do nice work but you have to do it safely so you can keep making new things for us to see.

Personally I don't think it would be easier to use a router, especially given the shape of the inside. From what I've seen, router-made bowls tend to have straight/vertical sides. Nothing wrong with that but not the look I was going for here. :)

Yes - the maple and the walnut were run over a jointer to make them flat, and then they were glued together before the carving was done.
