Wood turning! (or is it woodturning?) No but wood carving a walnut dough bowl for the first time! Woodworking is a passion for me whether wood-turning or wood carving! My recent retiree friend, we'll call her TB, answered the question “what bowl can I make you for your retirement” with “how about a dough bowl!” Dough bowl I thought...what the heck is a dough bowl! So after a quick internet image search, I figured out that I wouldn't be turning this bowl but carving it! Fun times in the shop trying a new technique! Another quick trip to the internet and a set of three angle grinder compatible wood carving disks we're ordered. (only about $22 dollars on Am**on)!
After just a few minutes using the wood carving disk I got a feel for how much material it was removing and although the entire project could be completed with just the carving disk I figured the process would go quicker if I removed a sizable portion of the material with a forstner bit before returning to the disk grinder. Once done with power carving the bowls shape, it was finished with 40 grit sandpaper before final sanding with 60, 80, 120 and 220 grits. The last step was a flood coat of walnut oil followed by touch-up coats in areas the walnut quickly absorbed the oil. I used Mahoney's Walnut utility oil which is advertised as food safe immediately and cures within about 24-48 hours.

What I do First anytime crafting a bowl is get your drill bit measure your depth on your product board then depending on how far you need to go down in your bowl you take that number and apply it to your drillbit and add a piece of blue painters tapeto the exact height and don’t go no higher than the blue tape. Add a bunch of little pilot holes in there, and that helps move the process a lot quicker, as well as achieving your proper depth without going too far.

Beautiful job. Ivy had two big pieces of wood earmarked for dough bowls for two years now. I will work on mine outdoors so I can let the chips fall where they may. Thanks again.

I am almost 80 and absolutely love making biscuits. My heart says don't make biscuits unless they're for other people. I sneak out to a local biscuit place here in N.C. called Biscuitville so that my dough bowl doesn't get jealous.. I digress. I inherited a dough bowl from my grandmother, so it is quite old. I suspect it was made with hand tools. It does not seem to have had a finish applied but I expect the fat from the dough might have acted a bit like a finish. It is shaped almost like yours except the outside bottom surface .is more convex. A friend of ours had to remove a mulberry tree from her back yard. As a gift she had a local turner make a green dough bowl. It is beautiful wood. I have read that green turned bowls will change shape a bit as they dry and it did. Thanks for your video. For this type of project have you used a small chainsaw for gross removal.? Thanks

Super happy you enjoyed the video and it’s even better that you’re using a keepsake item from your grandmother. Have you ever figured out how long ago your grandmother’s bowl was made? I’ve never used a small chainsaw for that type of project. My angle grinder with a wood removal disk does a pretty good job. Take care and I hope you have a great day.

Try the kuzall carbide discs they work way better than those discs
@SapperWoodworking

Being my first carving project, I decided to go with the cheapie discs which were three different shapes for about 20 bucks total. The carbide ones I saw were $60 each. Kuzall does look like a great brand should I ever choose a better, longer lasting disc. Thanks for the suggestion.
