⚠️ Just to say that daisy-chaining extension leads as I did here is NOT a great idea but this was obviously an emergency. If you do the same, make sure they're fully uncoiled (as I did) to avoid heat build-up and a possible fire risk. Also, avoid drawing too much power over a long period. Trying to get the full 3.6kW over a 13amp plug (in the UK) is asking for trouble!

This is the key reason it's V2L and not described in anyway for use as emergency backup due to safety and fire hazard. V2G is kinda here with Chademo and LEAF, and F150 Lightning with be the first in US for V2H for actual house backup with power going back into the 80A EVSE and into the house supply. VW announced we should see the ID.4 with bidirectional soon

@@JeanPierreWhite anyone can have a go without the Ioniq 5, it's a bit like flipping the breakers on all but sockets on the CU, unplugging everything in the house and attempting to run it all via one socket. 🙈 Lots of devices should not be run on power strips, and people aren't electrically savvy enough to make sure it's not overloaded 😔 it's credit to Andrew to pin the warning

Andrew good man, I would be concerned my self with coiled wires and extension leads running inside the home. Another concern for me is protection for people as now your running power from a car on rubber on its own circuits and as the advert claims run your microwave and kettle from your ev. All these devices need to be on rcds and that rcd needs to work as it should be to the BS 7671 regs. It's your safety first.
@JeanPierreWhite

@@gino2465 All of what you have said is applicable to permanent wiring. Extension leads are intended for temporary use in all cases. This scenario was for a temporary duration while power was cut. Extension leads do come with their risks as I think everyone has pointed out and should be used with caution. Andrew did not do anything improper, he knew his power draw was only 100w, enough for the fridge and internet/computers. Some light bulbs are 100w, this wasn't a large amount of electricity that could melt leads. Could his setup have been dangerous, sure, that's why he kept a close eye on what he was connecting and not trying to heat his home using a series of fan heaters.

Here in Canada it's even more crucial to plug in your furnace (99% of houses are heated with gas which require just a tiny bit of current to run the electronics) to avoid freezing pipes. When not charging the car, our house consumption is 10-11kW/day, so our 77kW Ioniq 5 could power the house for up to 5 days before hitting 20%.

This has to be the way forward. The process looks a bit messy, but that's a matter of tweaking the technology. An EV is a big battery on wheels. By including rooftop solar and off-peak charging, many of the issues associated with the intermittency of renewables are mitigated. All that is needed is cooperation between the manufacturers and the authorities. And that is where the problems will arise.

Our power was off for about 10 hours and we did the same, powered all the vital stuff from the EV, including TV and home entertainment systems! Except it is a 6 year old nissan leaf - I have a 600w inverter which I attach to the 12v then leave the car in drive mode. It powers our central heating pump too since I had the electrician put a plug on it which is normally plugged into a socket powered by the central heating timer but lets me run it manually when we have power cuts.. which we do from time to time in bad weather as we are also living in the sticks. The heat comes from a solid fuel Rayburn. Normally it's an oil boiler that runs the heating. We used 15% battery over that time. Have left it wired up as we have another storm right now. It's nice to see that newer EVs have this built in now so no messing about under the bonnet. And also you can drawer much more power! Super handy!

If you have a transfer switch installed near your consumer unit, in the event of a power cut you can just plug into that and all your circuits would be live at the consumer unit. That would mean all the lighting in the house for instance and if worried about overloading it would just be a case of turning off some circuit breakers. Would avoid running around and having to plug in appliances.
@WooShell
@WooShell 2 жыл бұрын
You should ask your local electrician to install a manual transfer switch in your fusebox, and have that wired up to an appropriately thick and long cable. That way, it's just throwing the switch and plugging into the car, and you'll be up and running again. Total cost of less than 500 pounds.

Rav4 Prime XSE also has V2L, and some people in Texas used it during their massive power outage during last winter. Was a life saver. The power output is half of the Hyundai, but in some ways, it's a bit better because the engine can turn on an act as a generator itself as well as charge the battery at the same time. So, you could in theory have a perpetual power generator as long as you have gas. Also, do yourself a favor and buy a small air fryer. They're about $50 USD, takes about 1500 watts to run, and is amazing. Way better than a microwave. I use mine in my Rav4 at the beach to heat up pizza, and it makes it crispy and hot.

Would be nice to wire the house to prepare for this situation. Have a switch on essential circuits to flip them to alternative supply. And have a 16A CEE input on the outside. Then you just have plug in the cable, and flip the applicable switch. And no cables though open doors, windows, drawers and cabinets. This kind of wiring would allow any external backup supply, V2L or just a traditional generator. I think the essentials are (in this order): freezer and refrigerator (you don't want food to go bad) bathroom lights (you don't want to miss the toilet making mess on the floor) coffee (you want to stay focused) internet, TV and computer etc. (you want to stay connected) To go even one step further, you could have smart switching. Cycling through to stay within maximum power, and a request button to switch on high power device (like coffee) on demand. I guess for "emergency" purpose, the cost of smart switching would probably not be defendable compared to manual switching.

In the end no power cuts here and of course the Tesla PW takes over seamlessly when called upon (the house lights etc do not go off, the PW just takes over immediately. This PW reaction time has improved over the years). But nice to know I could have used the P45 if needed (but a bit more hassle going out to car and connecting up cables etc. Would not have been nice in the midst of a terrible storm). This just shows how EVs and the fact that they are an electrical Energy Storage solution, and are far more advantageous than ICE vehicles on the driveway. Roll on V2G/V2H. No brainer.

Charge the car from solar, or off peak and use a portion of its battery to power the car during more expensive times. 70kw+ of potential energy as opposed to around 10kw for mid to large sized home storage systems. There's two different V2X varieties, the ones with the inverter in the vehicle and the ones using an external inverter. The Ioniq 5 / Kia EV6 uses aon onboard inverter where you then plug straight into the adaptor, and the Wallbox approach currently uses the CHAdeMO plug to connect to the high-voltage DC battery and then inverts that to mains voltage. There is absolutely no reason as to why there could not be a CCS-version of the Wallbox approach, and when that comes out _any_ vehicle with a CCS adaptor will then be able to be used with the external inverter but that will come at an additional cost of the external inverter, and they are not cheap! The Ioniq 5 / EV6 are using onboard inverters to directly provide the mains voltage from the adaptor which I think is a better approach as the hardware is already there and it's just a question or programming it to provide V2H / V2G on top of the already provided V2L feature, but the vehicles have to have a bi-directional inverter / charger for this to work. The Wallbox external inverter approach will work with any vehicle that has the high-voltage DC battery pins in the CCS plug but so far only the CHAdeMO plug has been used for his.

So annoyingly if you have solar and you get a powercut because of islanding the supply to prevent killing any linemen working on the line this means you dont get to use the solar you could be using. A really neat trick would be a dc input to the car from the house solar and simulateously provide v2l as it already does. Then you could wait out a return to grid power alot longer.

well i think most cars can run a 12V inverter with about 1kW of power. but other than running stuff that already can be run of of 12V(fridges, laptops, USB powered stuff, chargers) that is maybe enough power for a toaster or a travel version of a kettle and the biggest problem is the fact that the car is powered on so if someone wanted, they could brake in the car and drive off. plus it uses some power to keep the dash lit up.

How about getting a 100 amp transfer switch fitted to the feed to the consumer unit feed. That way you could just throw the switch and run the whole house of the V2L unit you would just need to be aware of the loads that you are switching on. Three things. One, you guys are lucky that you can output 3.6 kW from the Ioniq 5 and EV6. In practical terms, I think the average person in Canada or the U.S. would be hard pressed to get even the maximum 1.9 kW of output (120v@16a). Most regular wall outlets, and therefore most appliances, are rated for 1.44 kW (120v@12a) here in North America. You could try to run a power extension cord, but most of those are also rated only for the 12a/1.44 kW standard, so that could be sketchy if you tried to run something off of it that is trying to draw the full 1.9 kW, or multiple appliances trying to draw up to 1.44 kW. A wildcard would be whether you can simultaneously output from both the car charge port and from the outlet inside the car? Then maybe you can exceed 1.44 or 1.9 kW? That would have the inconvenience of needing to run two extension cords into the house (one of which would be coming from the inside of the car), but (if so) at least you could do it. That's worth looking into, IMO. And if you could somehow find two extension cords that both supported 120v@16a (if such things even exist, I've never seen one) then in theory maybe you could actually get the full 3.6 kW? Two, this feature is absolutely killer, and I won't replace our current EV with a new one unless it has this feature! Even if it is a mere 1.4 kW output. Though our (typically) huge refrigerators in North America would use a lot more power than the one shown in your video. ;) Three, "power cut" is an interesting way to describe it. Where I live (on Canada's west coast) we typically describe it as a "power outage", or just "an outage" for short. (I'm just as big a language nerd as I am an EV nerd. ;) )

Update: one website successfully tested using both outlets (the one in the back seat, and the one in the charging port with adaptor) simultaneously, and they did both function. That's the good news. However, this website claimed that the maximum output for both was 1.9 kW. What a strange restriction. If the European car can output 3.6 kW, why can't the North American car output up to a maximum of 3.6 kW distributed at up to a maximum of 1.9 kW per port? Weird. Well, weird if the claim from that particular website is true. They tested 1.7 kW of output out of one outlet, and only 30 W from the other, so their claim remains unproven. But if the claim comes from Hyundai, they surely ought to know?

@@cwt5654 Both European and North American panels are 240v. European panels output 240v to each outlet, North American panels output half to each outlet. But, that means if you have two outlets on opposite phases of the panel you can access the entire 240v. There are even extension cords that are designed this way, with two plugs (generally one short and one long) that are designed to be plugged into two outlets to merge into one 240v outlet at the end of the extension cord (with certain restrictions). Since there ARE two outlets, it opens up the possibility to access the full 240v@16a, if the car were designed that way. So is it? Can I run two extension cords and get the same 3.6 kW of the European car (or even 3.8 kW)? I see no reason that it couldn't/shouldn't have been designed that way.

Andrew the 3.6 Kw is only available with the schuko continental socket, with the UK socket you are limited to 10 amps i.e. 2.3Kw. This is because the UK 13 amp plug is only rated for 10 amp over a long period. Quite why it rated at 13 amps heaven only knows! Run a plug at 10 amps and it does get quite warm, at 13 amps it gets rather hot after a time! Also the MG ZS EV LR has V2L as an external I understand it. That is limited to 2.3 Kwh. Enough to boil a kettle though! As for house batteries, you only really need 13 or so Kwh to cover you for most eventualities, even a 8 Kwh will probably be OK for most households. As for induction hobs, their current consumption is approx 32amps flat out! This is about the limit for most inverters. Finally the price of house batteries is coming down much the same with vehicle batteries, so your estimate might be a bit high!
