It seems the two wires directly from your battery gives the device a kind of reference. The two wires from the shunt measure the voltage drop across the shunt (which it can use to determine the current flow). Very simple and clever device.

Two wires from the the battery show the voltage. - Top left hand of the meter. The device can measure from 6.5 volts to 100 volts DC. The other two wires - from the shunt show the Amperage (current) draw of operating devices. top right hand of the meter. multiply the voltage 12.23 x the amps 0.84 = watts 10.2

Great video, one question. What happens to the meter when you start the engine and the alternator begins to charge the battery? The amps would essentially be moving in the reverse direction across the shunt. Does it show a negative number indicating how much charge energy is flowing back into the battery?
@Vantouristcom7 жыл бұрын
Hi! My alternator charging and appliance are connected in different separated electrical circuits (and solar charger is separated circle too). So charging from solar or alternator not affecting data on my appliance wattmeter. I think it couldn't measure negative amps flow btw. In conclusion i plan to install separate meter to all of my circuits and have separate data about any of solar, alternator and appliance data

VanTourist The setup is like inverter and solar panel connected to solar battery. Inverter is normal which charge and discharge and solar panel is connected to battery with charge controller. I want to put three of these. Two between inverter and battery(just reverse in shunt) and one between solar panel and battery. So, that I could measure how much energy is stored in battery. Or is there any other possible way to measure Tubular solar battery's energy level?

Hi, I have a question about how to wire this meter. I have a motorhome with a converter. Regarding the diagram on the back of the meter what does "load" mean? I saw on your video that you wired it to a fuse box for "load". Would I wire it to my converter? If I am supposed to wire it from my converter which wire off the converter would I use? Please be specific. Thank you.
@geraldhenrickson74726 жыл бұрын
Things that consume power are the load. An inverter, a fuse panel for low voltage devices, etc. in your rig. I believe these meters can go between any source of power and any load as long as they do not exceed the limits listed. In your case, the shunt would go between the output side of your converter (usually 12v) and your fuse panel for all your low voltage devices. A shunt always (in my limited experience) goes on the ground side of the circuit. Note that this device seems to have a wiring diagram on the backside to help you wire it into the circuit.
@charleshoward99837 жыл бұрын
that should be what are you using for the load?
@hotforit6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Nice wiring job in the van. I'm considering mounting my shunt on plastic. Does the shunt get warm under load?

It could get warm if you load it close to maximum capacity (150A) for a long time. Probably you will not. In normal usage (under 50A) it stays cold

+Gary Hiscutt I did correct wiring on video, but not sure how you meter looks like. It must have + & - connections for power and two more for shunt. It’s fine to connect shunt wrong - you just will see zero amount of watts - that means you need to rewire it opposite way

Installing this device to my ebike... Do I use two phase wires as the load?
@Vantouristcom7 жыл бұрын
Not sure how your ebike works. Only could say that this device needs 8-90V DC power to work and it could measure 0-100A DC power by shunt that need to be installed on negative wire between battery and load.

@Vantouristcom7 жыл бұрын
hi! The "Wh" meter showing how much energy was passed trough the shunt! It doesn't matter what capacity your batteries are. It just count all the watts you have used. For example if you connect to you batteries 300W drill and use it for 2 hours - this number will show "600Wh" (300w*2h). Also you can reset this counter by holding button near display. Now about your 3kW inverter - it's too much for this power meter. 3kW is 250Amps of power, but this device made for 100Amps! Shunt looks strong, so i think it can handle at least 200A for some time, but about the meter - i not sure what will happens after 100A++ of power. Maybe it will just show some "error" or "100A". Or it might die - i have not tested such big amount of power trough it. For inverters is better to use separate 110V/220V meters which can measure 10kW++ easily
