After catching ELS 1221 and 502 leaving the mill to Channing, I caught ELS 503 and 501 also coming out of the mill heading north.. It's not very often you get ALL the power in Channing, but seeing the 70 PLUS car train they were building, it all made sense..

It is nice to see such a young railfan. So many hobbies are not being pursued by young people, and because the older members are aging out the hobby dies. Rockhounding is facing that predicament.

Nice to see the old Cadillac switching. Long gone are the days when rail crews would let us kids up in the cab and in the crummy and sometimes even let us ride while switching. Great video as always, thanks Jason!

Yeah, when I was in my teens in the 1960s a nice PRR crew used to let me ride up a short branch with them on Saturday mornings. They had to push the train up the branch, so I rode on the cabin car going up and the Baldwin switcher coming back down. Will never forget the experience.

I wonder if that young railfan is aware of how lucky he is to see a RARE SD 9, in 2024.

The boy was a little close tho. Give folks an idea why, I saw something shoot out of the trucks on an empty rail car a couple times. One particular time, the switchman was climbing down when it happened. An inner coil spring has broken and when the car crossed the Frog it dipped and a piece of the spring came out the side. We figured it was maybe stuck between the turns of an outer spring and got squeezed out from the dip in the rail at the Frog. Springs don't compress much on an empty but it was a freak thing.

Great video! Nice catch of a '55 Chevy cruising by! ELS has to be the most unfriendly railroad when it comes to railfans! The boy is just interested in trains and filming them. Nice to see him having fun. That old locomotive is really interesting to see still working!

It was surprising to see them clipping along that fast but the activity at Channing virtually begs for promptness if they do leave there with 70 some cars that should mean minimal cars to be added at Crivitz. With the siding loads already at the lead of the train there should be no switching at Sagola. Also worthy of note is that the 1221 was turned to face SB. Another reason to get things moving is that the gondolas of ore concentrates will probably need to be weighed and the closest scale probably is the CN at Green Bay. Sadly no listing for the NB log flat behind the power which was MLGX so we'll see if it's a storage car. Looking forward to the next journey of the 1221 plus the SD40s

The old SD9s and GPs and F units all great locomotives my favorite were the U boats! Those old locomotives had character unlike the ugly ones of today! Smdh! Good video Jason!

@erie910 I grew up with Kansas City Southern rolling past my parents backyard day and night! That was back when they had tracks running beside Airline hwy in Metairie and New Orleans! After many wrecks between 18 wheelers and trains they moved the tracks! This was during the 60s and 80s. I used to have nightmares of trains running through the house lol! When I moved away it took me forever to go to sleep without the train noise! Crazy how certain things you miss.

At least 25 to 50ft usually. You can tell sometimes by how the area away from the tracks are maintained. Farther is better! You never can tell when something will happen.

Hey, Jason, another good video! Did you catch the drones at 3:50 and 18:01? I kinda felt sorry for the kid. That’s what I would have done at his age. They don’t want you to trespass these days! Back in my day, it was somewhat ignored, as long as you were minding your own business. Back then, we were just watching trains. I never had a camera; I just sat and enjoyed. Now, because of liability issues and the strictness of management, they don’t want us around.

Are they working with three tracks? Hard to tell. Maybe you can figure how to add some graphics to your videos with track layouts that would help following all the switching action. Cool if you could automate thee to show what is happening in building all the configurations. But still fun to watch without this suff.
