I call this my lights out kit, but it’s really more of a place that I put the supplies I don’t want touched, and I don’t want anyone to dig through on a daily basis.
What it’s Not...
It’s not everything you have or need. There are probably a lot of supplies that you have that won’t fit in a plastic tote, and there are a lot of supplies that are scattered around the house that you use regularly. We have items like candles, lighters, flashlights and solar chargers that we use regularly that don’t go in this kit.
It’s not for fuel or lamp oils. You don’t want to store kerosene or lamp oil in the same container with your other supplies, and if you store it in the garage you need to make sure everything in it can handle the extreme temperature changes…more on this later.
What it is...
It’s for stuff that you don’t want to be touched. The kids are notorious for taking batteries or mixing up dead batteries with new batteries, so I like to have a stash set up that I know for a fact that I have the supplies that I think I have.
It’s for stuff you won’t use regularly. As the saying goes, 1 is none, and 2 is 1. I have supplies around the house that I hope will be there when we need them, and I have supplies stored in my lights-out kit that I know will be there when I need them.
It’s an easy go-to for family. I like having this kit set up because the last thing I want to do is be running around the house trying to find batteries and flashlights, and if I am gone, I know that the family can just go grab the lights-out kit and have everything they need.

This is a great example of what everybody does, I was better prepared than this for hurricane Maria, a lot of this garbage will fail with daily use for months, including his generator, best items in his box are, the extension cord, head lamp, inverter and stove lighter. The tiny chargers will be helpful in the beginning, but practically useless after the generator breaks down...watching this video is like waiting for a car wreck, I don't prep like this no more.

Get a few of the Luci lights. They are solar powered only. Put them on your dash and you have lights at night. I have not had electricity since I started my travels. I mean, I plug in if I can, but normally I don’t. Stay well, and warm.

Goal zero makes a similar light that I prefer over the inflatable units. It uses a translucent plastic material that expands or collapses like an accordion. They are about twice the price though at $20-25.

I believe I had blown up one Luci light and it popped eventually so, I never had blown them up since. No need to really. Finally, getting some big snow (snowed all day yesterday and pretty much all day today as well). Checked on a friend and she said, her power went out this morning. My lights flickered, but the electric held all day so, far and got the Jackery completely charged up. Watched this video and I have my shopping list. 😁 I would maybe add some of those 7 day candles, Lisa knows. You can get then from the Dollar stores. They give off good light and well, I don’t think anyone would be burning them continuously for 7 days. 🤷‍♀️stay safe and well.

Great video you have given me some good ideas. just a small thing for computers you really need a pure wave converter as many laptops and desktops don't like the half wave converters.

in place of an inverter that requires a vehicle to power it I have 2 mini power stations that I can charge with my 10 watt folding solar panel or wall outlet -- I don't have a vehicle. because I live in a small apartment above the first floor I can't have a fuel generator

Having an inverter handy is pretty good since most of us have that $20k+ generator sitting in our driveway. Having the power station is much easier though as it's more portable. Of course they both have their limitations that one needs to assess whether it is worth paying to overcome.

Did the Xtar finally go to a standard usb type cable? I'll have to look at them again. You do have to be careful on the available chargers for USB connection. Many only charge Lithium batteries. Last time I looked there were only three that used standard USB, not a non-standard version, and could be used for ALL rechargeable batteries.

If I may, the rechargeable batteries in the bag is ok but to make it safer, tape the ends of the batteries so they do not contact any of the other ends as it can either damage the batteries or possibly cause a fire. Or, tape them together side by side in a position so they don’t connect by accident

Or keep them in an individual plastic container.

@@bigbrother9531 each battery in its own plastic container would take up a lot of space. As long as the ends don’t touch, an individual container is ok, just tape them all together and keep metal from completing a circuit
