Which do you prefer??

I had a hydro and moved up to a power reverser and I'll never go back. Power reverser seems more like a tractor and the hydro seems like a garden tractor

@@dirtpicasso I completely agree. For city people that move to the country, I think they find the hydro easier. But for the country and farm folks, I think they appreciate the gears. Luckily there are options for everyone. I’m very happy with my power reverser. The shuttle shifter setup is perfect.

I got my 4044M back in June of this year. Exact spec as yours with the power reverser and so far I've really enjoyed it. Got a box blade and brush hog to go with it. FYI first time tractor owner too. @@Fever_Rides

@@marcusgarza7127 that’s great! I think a lot of people get the 1 & 2 series for their 1st tractor, then have to upgrade. You saved yourself some money

I grew up with reversers/shuttles. I can see someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with equipment or has needs for specific tasks. But for me, a shuttle is the way to go. They put the power down, arent as prone to overheating or losing power, and are more stout.

I completely agree. I grew up on the same. Thanks for the comment!

A good video showing how a power reverser works on the JD compact tractor. Have been struggling with the hydro vs. gear on the same model tractor. Farm implements I have worked with over the years that were hydro driven were non draft implements like swathers , combines, and yard lawn mowers. Have had a hydro combine "give up" traveling too fast going up a steep hill with a hopper full of grain. They can be susceptible to over heating if they are worked too much, hot summer days don't help much either. They also tend to have what is sometimes referred to as a hydraulic noise or squeal, how ever some gear transmissions can have their noises also. For mostly loader work and small spaces a hydro would be well adapted, for draft work requiring heavier pulling a gear transmission would be worth considering. The power reverser operates with out clutching is a big deal for me, i did not know that. I have couple larger tractors with power shift transmissions and they work fine for me and if the transmission has synchronized gears would prefer this gear transmission over a hydro. Dealer stock is low in my area, would like to look and drive one.

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. And I agree with you. The gear drive is great for field work, but the hydrostatic drive definitely has its benefits also.

So you say "a hydro loses 3-5% of power"; !! This is only "Probable " for the "Power delivery to the REAR POWER TAKE OFF SHAFT". A Hydrostatic Transmission is EXTREMELY Inefficient for "Power to the Wheels" in a Compact tractor. Did you ever SEE the Demostation of Two EXACT TRACTORS in comparison of the HYDROSTATIC'S VS. Gear Drive's.?( there are many out there) The Comparisons are totally ASTOUNDING. Gear Drives have 275% MORE PULLING POWER TO the WHEELS.!!! l have various configurations of tractors; shuttle shift great drive transmissions, "Hydro-slack-o-Howl-o-matic's ", and my favorite "Gear drive Power-Reversers : Power-Shuttles"& l can thoroughly Attest to these Claims. But NO Hydrostatic Bulldozer transmissions, or CVT's( constantly variable transmissions).... these are in a CLASS Of Their OWN... just for the BIG STUFF. The "hype" of the compact tractor with a "hydrostatic transmission " is "Geared" for the Convenience & ease of use for the "home-lowners " of the 23-50 HP 900-3500lb ,200 hours per year & LESS, BECAUSE They just wouldn't know what to DO "With REAL POWER" anyway !. Thank you Sir for the Excelent vidio and happy safe tractoring. Best wishes with all your endeavours.

A full mechanical trans is around 90% efficiency. An hydrostatic one is about 80 to 85%. Both to the wheel.
