I was really hoping you'd show how you removed the seal mentioned at 19:30/24:36. I'm currently rebuilding a rack and pinion but this is the only thing holding me back. On mine there is a sort of metal stopper/ring that keeps the seal in but I cant knock it out without risking damaging it.. I managed to destroy the old seal and remove it but in order to insert the new one I need to take out the stopper.

I first tried a socket attached to an extension, that did not work. I then used my picks and taped them to long screwdrivers. The seals are not easy to remove, and you don't want to scratch any part of the inside of the "tube" that could potentially cause a leak. Here is a link to the Fix the Rust Bucket Facebook Page, I posted some pictures of the picks and seal after it was removed. facebook.com/fixtherustbucket This one was stuck really hard in there. I had to get the sides freed up first then I was able to pick and pull the seal and white hard plastic rings out. This was for both of the seals. I hope this helps a bit more and helps you with yours.

This is a reply for another person that was having the same issue and their way of removing the seals. "I went to Harbor freight bought a long reach set of needle nose pliers and the longest flat head screw drivers you gotta bend the lip of the seal and use the pliers to grab it and pull it out but make sure you get a good bite and your good!"

The timing of this couldn't be more perfect. Trying to decide if to replace or rebuild mine, which is exactly the same unit. After watching your well filmed video I'm leaning towards saving $250 and doing the rebuild. Thanks to you I have the confidence I can do it. Thank you, sir!

If you're able to afford the vehicle downtime it's worth giving it a try. When I ordered the seal kits I had to order two different kits. One came with all the necessary seals for the rack and pinion but not a new pinion bearing. You might find a different kit that comes with everything, just check out what it comes with before ordering. I appreciate your comment and taking the time to watch the video.

Thank you so much for showing how to do this. I've been working on cars for 20 years but never tore one of these apart. My auto mechanics teacher, as well as several shops, always told me it's too difficult to rebuild a rack and always better to just replace them. Finally seeing how it's not that difficult, with the proper tools, I'm slightly irritated all these years I could've just done this and saved ppl a ton. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏

I am glad you found this video helpful. I have a second video out now reassembling this rack and pinion. The new Teflon O-rings can be a bit difficult to reinsert but with a few tricks, they slide right in. Thank you for watching. Best of luck with your hot rod!

Finally an installation video that is step by step, instead of a time lapse explanation of installation is the reverse of disassembly by other authors.

...yours is the first video I've ever seen on KZbin, that clearly shows how a hydraulic rack and pinion steering system works, and how to repair it. Thank you. 👍🏼🤘🏼✌🏼 Is it possible to repair just the Passenger side Outer seal on the rack, while it's still mounted on a vehicle. After you've removed the Inner tie rod assembly, without having to remove the whole unit. Thanks. -- Alfredo

Unfortunately I do not have those part numbers. The ones I had were in good shape so I reused them. A quick google search for your make and model will give you what you're looking for. CarParts and Rock Auto are good places to get the parts you need. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. Its free and we have tons of great content coming out. ALSO, check out this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XPq5yNjrmLd5Y , about my free giveaway information. I am giving away a new Milwaukee Impact Wrench Set when we reach 1k subscribers. Don t miss your chance to win this tool.

First time I installed a rack. I did it without any bushings. I didn’t know that I had to install my own bushings.

I have about 60 degrees turn back and forth with it clicking in the Rack, pretty violent on the freeway. Would that be a seal job or just replace the whole rack and pinion?

I do not want to guess or tell you how/what to repair. Its not safe to give someone an answer or advice on what to repair/replace without a proper diagnose of the vehicles issue.

Question for ya I got 2015 Escalade with front end accident the steering wheel just keeps spinning with loud noise wheels are not moving it all looks intact Is there a way to rebuild the steering rack what broke is there rebuild kits
@fixtherustbucket
@fixtherustbucket 10 ай бұрын
It could be one broken part/location or a combination of broken locations that are causing the issue. Its a bit hard to figure out not seeing it in person. I would start where the steering shaft exits the fire wall and work down. Your truck should be equipped with an intermediate shaft and a lower intermediate shaft, the universal joint could have broke inside the boot. That would give you a noise with no wheel movement. If not, then possibly the input shaft or steering rack has broken/stripped gears. Thanks for the question. I hope I was able to point you in a good direction to start looking. FTRB.

Where do you find info find torque value setting the preload on the pinion?
@fixtherustbucket
@fixtherustbucket Жыл бұрын
I sometimes purchase Manufacture Service Repair Manuals for vehicle(s) I own or do large projects on. Someone can find most of the information their looking for in a Chilton or Haynes manuals. Now a days, for almost the same cost, you can purchase a flash drive containing the entire Manufacture Service/Repair Manual. Those flash drives contain the same information that was or is distributed to dealership service shops. As for the Pinion on this piacular rack, I believe the torque was 27in/lbs.

Nice .. BUT you didn't film THE most difficult part : Removing and replacing the seals in the bottom of the tubes ! Pinion and Ram. Replacing the big rubber bushings is a waste of video time... in comparison.

I have had the handle for one of those craftsman screwdrivers EXPLODE on me when I was using it as a drift/chisel like that. I would absolutely advise against that.

hello, my 2010 suburban has slight stiff to the steer, compared to my friend 2008 suburban. will the rebuilt make it lighter to steer
@fixtherustbucket
@fixtherustbucket 2 ай бұрын
If its just a bit hard to steer there could be a few different things gong on. Below is a list of things to check before getting into a rebuild. 1. Front tire pressure is low 2. Worn out suspension parts. 3. See if the fluid level is low, any leaks around the inner tie rod boots, or lines back to the pump. 4. Power steering pump could be getting ready to go. The list of what to look at before a rebuild has many factors before diagnosing a rebuild. Without being there to look at it myself, I can only give you an idea where to start.
