A pair of the seesaw steel frame ramps that dealerships use to elevate their promoted cars would be good for driving the vehicle up and giving access for this type of work.

Very familiar! I do this to my 130 every second year, and end up exactly that wet, cold and mucky. Then rustproofing with lanolin based grease. Essential, as the roads I go on gets salted and gritted during winter. I might get round to make a film as well.

We used to have to get the taxis steam cleaned before they were council MOT’d every year and I always used to think that no matter how bad your job is, it’s better than the lad with the sou’wester on working in a pit in the floor in two foot of cold muddy water on a December day steam cleaning a cab.

I have made up extensions to the front wheel arches (on the rear side at the bottom) which removes the mud traps and protects the outriggers. A simple bbut very effective mod. I have bought mud protectors for the rear ( from Gwyn Lewis in Wales) but I haven't seen similar items for the front on sale anywhere.

I enjoyed this video! It reminds me of when I used to work for Mighty Minis And Metros in East Devon (long gone now). Mild steel floors, sills, valances and subframes would continue to excessively rot away underneath the sticky bitumen-based thick rubber coatings applied just to get each car through an MoT. To initially prep each car for work, I used to jetwash the undersides only for me to get showered with black rubber excess coating which was stuck to very flakey, long-corroded metal. It really was a crap job!

IT WAS A BIT EASIER THAN WHAT YOUR DOING, AS IT WAS UP ON LARGE CONCRETE RAMPS. WE HAD ALL THE GEAR. BUT GOT JUST AS WET AND DIRTY! I DID IT FOR 3 MONTHS 8 HOUR SHIFTS, GOOD MONEY, BUT THAT WAS ENOUGH FOR ME!! TAKE CARE MIKE, STAY SAFE! AS IT SEEMS YOUR ON YOUR OWN THERE,MOST OF THE TIME!

How did you clean out the inside of the members? My solution is to drill holes so I can pass a garden hose along the full length flushing out any dirt. I have bought plastic plugs to fill the holes keeping out mud etc. This works much better than trying to pressure wash through small dia holes which only permit a limited spray pattern. My 30 year Defender has very limited corrosion (hardly any) and shows the value of taking these precautions.

Hi Mike i had all the wax accidently taken off using this although it was a recent coating put on i had started to clean the engine with a pump sprayer id mixed it in but using the rest up on the chassis thinking it would just get the dirt off after leaving it on for 5/10 mins then power washed it and it came up clean this is the stuff Surfex HD buy Bilt Hamber This great wash / prep stage development from Bilt Hamber is a spray and wipe clean product designed to attack all oil and grease based dirt and grime build up on your vehicles paintwork. Because this product isn't solvent based (which is great in environmental terms) this product is able to attack and effortlessly clean organic, or water deposited grime. This great product provides performance levels that match and even exceed solvent systems while meeting the latest standards of biodegradability. Adjust this product to the strength suiting the level of soil and dirt as it remains active at levels of just 1 part to 200 in water for light work, or used neat for extreme duty. Surfex HD is recommended for all arduous automotive, commercial and domestic cleaning duties. Can be used on paint, wheels, tyres, fabric, carpets and most surfaces. Spot tests are always advisable

The powdercoating on my Defender bullbar acted much the same way - once compromised, it allowed water to wick in and it was "always wet" and always rusting. It was cheaper to buy a new one (from a LR dealer!) than repair

That's why I stopped buying and supplying anything plasticoated 10 years ago Powder coat is a real bond, but this plastic coating is terrible here - as you say it cracking in the cold, and water gets in and cannot get out

Sounds like me removing wood-chip wallpaper :-) I'm surprised you can't find someone local to do this. Usually truck stops have HP washing services either onsite or nearby? I used to think Karcher was German (based on the name), but the first time mine froze in the garage over winter and disabled it (broke a 25¢ plastic part that was $20 to buy) I discovered it is Italian - now I understand. So now I am fastidious about draining befor winter comes. But really - do they expect me to bring the thing into the lounge over winter?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
You should run some used antifreeze though it on the last use before winter ( great use for it BTW!) This is a good old German one when they made proper power washers - I was tempted to buy new but this came up used but broken I had to replace the contactor and bypass a few features (low fuel level as it is interlocked to starting) but runs like new Also I run some muriatic acid through the boiler coil once a year to reduce scale which reduces the output - amazing difference to performance Karcher sold out to the cheap home market use, and the smaller stuff is not much good - plastic parts as you say I recently bought a Karcher upholstery cleaner and broke after the warranty was up - and that was a $800 machine!

Hi Mike. I wonder what precautions you suggest to avoid high pressure water getting where you don't want it to go. Personal experience is you can end up with a real mess inside the vehicle. Most Land Rover owners will know that there are lots of holes, unsealed seams etc which will allow water in - and unless you do a lot of wading you might not have discovered before. It may be that you just let it dry out afterwards. What do you suggest? Cheers Simon

I have just done a thorough DIY underbody pressure washing as a part of the preparation for preventive underbody rust proofing. The underbody has never been washed since the vehicle was produced 8 years ago. A thick and super tough layer of dirt called "traffic film" has accumulated on it. I can now confidently say that the only worse washing job might be when those Indians wash their grudgy working elephants with a hard on.
