Lupe didn't fall off. He can stop and go whenever he wants. He's one of those very few mc's who can actually control his career. He's smarter than everyone else. And the part where he's talkin about kendrick and how there's many other unknown mc's that can eat him alive; that's lupe telling kendrick to show some humility. Agreed, he's kinda like Eminem, Jay Z or Nas. Lupe is clearly annoyed by all the praising thats going towards Kendrick, but he kinda has a point. To pimp a butterfly was declared a classic by so many while the songs were mediocre at most. I understand the message is important and its what hiphop needs, but that doesn't justify the fact that the songs were not as good as he used to make them. Tetsuo and youth had a message and was a genius album, it was better than kendrick's album IMHO and so was under pressure by logic. This is coming from a longtime fan of K dot and his music.

While I still feel like FL2 as an album was a bit wayward, there's one thing that Lupe is undeniably consistent about and that's his lyricism. My brother and I were talking about this the other day and I feel like we're coming full circle in hip-hop now. We're arriving back to a point where emcees are actually saying something constructive and meaningful, not just looking to make a fat wad o' cash off a track that really is a three-minute long chant/hook. Lupe got the ill-treatment from his label to those that refuse/simply can't understand him because he refused to deviate from his principles while everyone else wanted to participate in the minstrel show talmbout wealth, ho's, violent gangland fantasies, the false ideal of hyper-masculinity, and materialism. That's not only really admirable but that's real strength right there. I haven't seen a more intelligent emcee since Q-Tip & Posdonus. I can say that with confidence now.

I love Lupe. He's phenomenal. Defiantly a great lyricist and an intriguing talented artist. However, although there is always a bit of truth behind an opinion, I think Lupe holds a bit of salty towards K Dot for being essentially what Lupe was suppose to be. The thing is, lyricism is a tricky concept. A lot of you in the comments are saying Lupe will murder K Dot. I can see where that opinion comes from, being someone who enjoys Lupe's work, can understand and grasp it, and considers him a top 5 personal favorite still making music (Excluding legends like Nas, Em), but it's a bit silly. What you people need to understand is a lot of Lupe's praise comes from his lyrical tendency to go over heads. Much like Jay Z. To me, like Jigga, and in my eyes, that doesn't make you 10x better, but unfortunately to most people it does. Just the fact that they grasp the magnitude of a power bar after the initial listen, blows their mind, and automatically the emotional excitement that comes with that puts it in your head, that he is ten fold of what he is. You got to understand, just because you don't get what someone says, doesn't make it hot. I call it a "Personal" bar, not meaning as far as their personal life, but a bar that is inspired by a spark of an idea, and is so vague, that only they would initially understand. That's it. Anyone with decent knack for writing can literally do it. Lupe is so personal with his bars, you have to look deeper to understand them a lot of the time. With that being said. Kendrick's style is so great because not only is he giving you a little of every lyrical ability such as wordplay, flow, delivery, complex rhyme schemes, metaphors, and entendres, but he does it WHILE appealing to your average listener, a.k.a the masses. That's not easy to do at all. Like a guy in these comments said "He found that sweet spot". It's very hard to find and walk that thin line that doesn't cross into being over lyrical like Jay Z's new style a lot of times; where he seems trash because he is TOO personal/vague with his bars, or being under lyrical, not saying shit. He's right between. Rapping with a greater message than any rapper in awhile, doing it so well. There's a reason he's praised the way he is. He is literally like Pac. Spreading knowledge, awareness, and provoking thought, lyrically as hell, emotionally, passionately, ALL WHILE appealing to the masses! To broaden the message and spread the idea. Revolutionary shit. Bigger picture. He spits like an underground rapper with the advanced vocabulary and yet sells that shit on a massive scale. That shit is RARE. He knows just the right formula like Pac and what puts the cherry on top is he's real as hell. Examples: His control verse. A lot of people hate because they think it's hyped. When the truth is, a real hip hop head appreciates the lyrical content in that verse, but that's not at all the MAIN reason we praise it, contrary to popular belief, but the fact that a rapper in Kendrick's position, who is relevant, selling, killing the game, and speaking truth was the one to drop a verse that was meant to purposely bring forth responses and reactions out of rappers, for the sole purpose of REAL MUSIC. Wanting to bring back that competitive, fun, natural rap like the golden era! While also playing a smart business move for traffic sales. Yet people assume we "Hype" it cause of him rapping his ass off, when that's far from the truth. Again, bigger picture shit. K Dot and Cole are literally the two kings of this shit rn, and Drake's the cash cow King, doing his own real thing, murdering the game on top. As far as the real rap MCs, Dot and Cole represent it for us right now, and that's what Lupe was suppose to be! Instead he got too lost in sacrificing the message for the sake of greater lyricism. Where only the real hip hopheads like us can understand him, and only then say, "Damn this kid is out of this world". Don't get me wrong. Lupe is a top tier lyrical genius. However, you CANNOT compare him and Kendrick. It's deeper than just lyrics. But, for lyrics sake, let's say you don't gaf about all this preaching. Listen to his control response to Kendrick. Wasn't the hottest shit. Though to his defense, I'll say he was playing around a bit as well. Still, Lupe doesn't want Kendrick, trust me. His style is too unorthodox and mysterious for diss tracks. His bars would fly overhead and about them you get them, he could've said 4 hot bars for the same message. It's the type of style not made for dissing rappers, and if he dumbed himself down, blow for blow, Kendrick would take the cake, because Lupe's over complicated lyrics MAKE him who he is. Take Nas' Ether for example. Arguably the best diss track ever made. Is it blatant, vague, or packed with double entendre power bars too complicated to understand? No. It's straight to the point, sweet, punchline/rhyme scheme style rhyming, straight shredding with bars and facts. Kendrick would do that better than Lupe. Trust. I love Lupe. His body of work is underrated and outstanding. But he doesn't take this beef is it ever happened so quit with the "Murder" comments, cause "Murder" means totally outclassing and if he somehow won the beef, it wouldn't be by a long shot, can tell you that. Moral of this long ass rant: Aside from the business, sales, and strategic aspects of rapping, styles matter the most when it comes to going at each other's throat, and Kendrick's style is better fit for that here. Case closed. Now let's jam some Tetsuo and enjoy the artistry.

+Bishop Alexander I enjoyed reading your perspective on 'K Dot v. Lupe. Interesting and you made some pretty agreeable points. However, Kendrick wants no parts of Lupe in a battle. His only advantage in a battle versus Lupe would be the fact that Kendrick is currently hotter than him. Sadly tho, in the eyes f the public that fact would be significant enough to give Kendrick the W over Fiasco.

I understand Lupe's sentiment here, but I don't think he understood where Kendrick was coming from. He wasn't on some "I'm gonna drop this and make everyone else obsolete". He just was trying to bring back the competition to Hip-hop in the mainstream, it was almost like an invitation to everyone. On some "I'm challenging you all to come over here and try to be the best" type thing. He left out some people, his own camp, and most notably OGs like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop, and Lupe can be considered among them too. He respects all of them too.

Lupe just keeps amazing me time after time. I noticed that a lot of the comments down below were saying stuff like "Why would he name it crack? Does he even know how much of an influence he is on society?" Let's go back to Kick Push, when he released that song in 06, he stated that the song was about skateboarding, AND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE because people thought that he was talking about pushing drugs and that that is was lupe's message was(considering he also had songs like Fast Money, DopeBoy, and Hustlaz Due at the time), but with this new song entitled "Crack," he is using reverse psychology by saying that this song is literally about smoking crack, and he wants to see what people take from that. Also now that people know the type of person that lupe is, they'll be like, "Oh, well everyone knows about his conceptuality, so this must mean something." Well, It does mean something. This song is going to be Kick Push, but in a parallel universe. Understand what I'm saying?

A few things. One, this lady is an excellent hiphop interviewer. Two, watching this video just kind of saddens me, for strange reasons that I don't completely understand. Three, I find it harder and harder to separate and artist from news that I've heard about the artist, unlike my teen days, when I did tons of research on the artists and their music, and didn't care as much about opinion on the artists from other people, except seasoned critics. Four, Lupe is to rap music, what Philip K. Dick was to science fiction writing because people just don't get him for the most part, but in the future, when he becomes more irrelevant, I''m sure younger people will see how a genius was truly ignored in his time, for the most part. 5 Kendrick is the real deal in my opinion, and even though I prefer Lupe's content matter in his rap music, I can honestly say that Kendrick "gets it" far more than Lupe ever did, and it is sad to see him acknowledging that he fell off, however wittily he tries to play it off, while trying to offer Kendrick "advice." If I was Kendrick (and remember I really respect and like Lupe), I would tell him to shove that advice up his ass, and quit being so pretentious and haterish.

Lupe da genius. Been a fan sese kicj push then mixatapes to the cool forward. Being the greatest mc isn't all about lyrics and metaphors, but lupe is the nerd outcast of hip hop in a good way. But the nerd is always recognized for their success sooner or later.

Lupe goes in, but I just listened to SLR2 since they were talking about it and uh, they still haven't found somebody who could come hard enough in entire songs what Kendrick did in a few short bars.

I've listened to lupe's 4 albums extensively (not as much the last one) and I'd say his first 2 albums were on a different level. I think the skill is still there, but his songs just seem simpler in concept now. Yeah kick, push was straight up, but then you have a whole other layer with kick, push 2, and the entire cool album was just an interesting work of art. It doesn't seem like he's really pushing his creativity any more, just talking about what he's interested in, in rap form.

respect Lupe's old stuff but his new stuff doesn't interest me, and Kendrick kills about 90% of every record I heard so not sure about Lupe's perspective but i'd like to hear more from Fiasco and hope I feel his music again..

Ppl say lu fell off but fact is his type of music isnt even in demand any more, his former listeners are listening to future. Lu's fanbase wasnt just all hiphop headz, alot was regular hiphop consumers that go along with who ever has alot of promotion and lupe had that in 06. Now since he's not on ur tv all day everyday u say he fell off lol. F&L2 was a great album, so how he fall off?

I love Lupe and for me, he's the greatest lyricist on so many levels... BUT! When he said that he has always written lyrics in a manner so that every listener would understand what he's saying by the first time listening to it, I couldn't resist saying: "That's a myth, Lupe". To this day, I still don't believe that I have understood even a fraction of THE COOL.

I admit I don't "follow" hip hop, but when the heck did Lupe fall off???? Relevant substance + amazing word play AND originality AND positive (not preachy, either) and SUPER entertaining = LUPE. The heck????? A fall from space...indeed. {Plus he's Muslim}

Kick Push : Lupe says that it is about skateboarding | People took it as a song about drugs CRACK : Lupe says that it is about crack | People are taking it to be much more than just a song about crack.

you can literally be smarter than everyone else but the idea of being a great rapper or Lyricist is to make others understand what you're saying, so that everybody even the most simplest person can pick it up. Which is why as an overall rap artist Kendrick is better. All the fame and awards kind of tell the same Story too!!

Yeezus was not that hard to get...wtf is Lupa talking about? It's industrial.
@imdetamilboy10 жыл бұрын
James Low Haha I actually feel he improves with each album he makes in various ways with Yeezus being his best album. Lyrically not the best, yes, and possibly his weakest but vocally, musically, thematically and attitude wise, it's his best for sure. College Dropout is his weakest imo. It is his best lyrically though...tied with MBDTF...but idk.
@lorca1710 жыл бұрын
No way, college dropouts has got to be his best album. I personally think graduation was a really good album, possibly as good as college dropouts. I think after 808, ye took really big risks and sometimes it worked. But yeezus wasn't that good. In fact, i think its a bit too much. Maybe its cuz it hasn't grown on me but i don't know man.

So many rapper butt hurt over that control verse Lupe is dope but there aren't a whole lot of rappers out there messing with Kendrick. He's a breath of fresh air in a rap game that is for the most part lacking substance and creativity. The best artist out right now get little to no radio play himself included. He should be thanking Kendrick for calling out all these wack ass rappers telling them to step up their game. As for Drake his reaction was so lame. Being that he is one of the few actually talented mainstream artist he should have had Kendrick's back for the sake of the culture. Instead he went and got his feeling hurt…….

***** when kendrick puts together a modern day epic through three albums, plays in different genres of hip hop than his familiar gangsta rap, AND still kills with lyrical precision while promoting the bettering of mankind then maybe, MAYBE, he can compare to Lupe. Recognize that he has innovated rap and shown why it should be considered an art form. Trust i'm a big fan of Kendrick, but c'mon son, Lupe is beyond the people that preceded him and those that come after him.
@187Wretched11 жыл бұрын
2Fresh2356 Kendrick "gangsta rap" ?? have you even sat down and listened to any of his projects? Look Lupes first two albums and the mixtapes around that time is god level mc type shit but I honestly think at the moment Kendrick is making better music. Section 80 vs Food and Liquor is a better question since we cant compare both artists as a whole because one is inconsistent and the other is brand new.
@2Fresh235611 жыл бұрын
Food and Liqour one or two? Both of those albums had a completely different focus, and even if we are talking one and Kendrick's section 80 in comparison, Kendrick still can't touch Lupe. Lupe is too diverse to even be in the same sentence as Kendrick. Kendrick is a sick lyricist, but what he has done Lupe has done 20 times over AND better. And honestly it aint even Kendrick fault. Lupe has more experience and from research I've done he's well read and well versed in his craft. Kendrick will get there, just know right now, Lupe is above him.
