@Adi Adiani I agree. Now, unless the higher frequency due to FCC regulations, has to be of a very low power, then range can be affected. Higher frequencies are more penetrating otherwise.

It is not well explained. both 2.4 and 5 channels have the same speed, each channel is 20 mhz. what makes 5 ghz faster is that you can aggregate channels that are none overlapping so that you can get a 40 (N), 80 (AC) and even 160mhz which you don't have in the 2.4. 5ghz is not new, it has been there for more than 10 years and widely available for home users for the last 6 years. To get the higher speed, your clients needs to support it as well, so you need to update your laptops/smart devices as well to the latest, it is not just getting a new router.

Cautious note for people wanting to buy the recommended router in the descriptions link. The voltage is 110V AC. So if you’re in the UK for example where you need 230V, this won’t work and you’ll instantly damage the product as soon as you plug it in.
@stephensnell5707
@stephensnell5707 3 ай бұрын
You idiot,USA AND UK PRODUCTS THAT REQUIRE ELECTRICITY ARE DESIGNED TO HANDLE THE DIFFERENT VOLTAGES SO 110V USA PRODUCTS WILL ONLY WORK ON THAT VOLTAGE AND UK PRODUCTS WILL HANDLE THE UK VOLTAGE WITH NO PROBLEMS ALSO,110 VOLT APPLIANCES WILL ONLY BE COMPATIBLE WITH USA OUTLETS AND NOT COMPATIBLE WITH UK OUTLETS

One last thing to note... the 5 GHz band doesn't actually have 25 separate frequencies. What it has is 25 x 20 MHz bands. But wifi at 5 GHz is capable of ganging bands together. 802.11-n uses 40 MHz bands and there are only 12 channels. 802.11ac uses 80 MHz (6 channels) and 160 MHz (2 channels). In some countries (including the U.S.) additional channels are available. The 2.4 GHz band has a fourth non-overlapping channel (channel 14) and the 5 GHz band has a bunch more too. Some of the 5 GHz channels may be unusable due to radar also using those channels. The savings grace for the 5 GHz band is its low range. If you have nearly direct line of sight, the low range prevents other nearby routers from interfering with yours. So if you live in an apartment complex, for example, the 5 GHz band is virtually guaranteed to be superior to the 2.4 GHz band because the 2.4 GHz band will be filled up with all your neighbors wifi routers due to its longer range. But your neighbors 5 GHz routers won't have the same reach and are less likely to interfere with your 5 GHz. On the other-hand, if you live in a single-family home, 2.4 GHz can potentially cover the whole house without having to use relays, and your neighbors are far enough away that their 2.4 GHz won't interfere with yours. -Matt

The only thing he didn’t point out is to not confuse the 5G router feature with the 5G cellphone data feature. Newer cellphones have both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi like the newest routers. But this has _nothing_ to do with so-called 5G data plans. There, 5G is kind of an arbitrary term simply meaning fifth generation cellular service. First generation was analog radio signals. Second generation switched to digital voice and data and allowed texting. Third generation (and the first called 3G) added higher speed digital data. Fourth generation added even higher data speeds. Fifth generation added still higher speeds. There’s some technical differences with each new generation too, but that’s the gist of it.

The simple way to say it is this: 2.4GHz - High Amplitude, slow frequency, so information is less in quantity but consistent and less lossy 5GHz - Low Amplitude, High frequency, so a lot more information but very lossy due to energy dissipating fast

3:39 it's correct but also beacause you can't trasmit at the same power of a 2,4 ghz modem router a 5ghz signal because it can hurt you. A 5ghz signal it is inherently more powerful so can cause internal burns.

It's like 2.4 and 5 are inverse in their advantages and disadvantages. I thought 5 GHz was better simply because it was a higher number than 2.4. Clearly not so.

2.4 GHz Advantages: _Farther range. _Can penetrate solid objects better Disadvantages: _Vulnerable to interference _Slower speed The 2.4GHz has 3 nonoverlapping channels 5GHz Advantages: _Higher transfer speed _Less vulnerable to interference Disadvantages: _Shorter range _Harder time penetrating solid objects The 5GHz 25 non overlapping channels

While everything mentioned in the video are true, switching from 2.4GHz to 5GHz router will most likely not provide any improvement in terms of speed for most internet users (that use cheap ISP internet services). 802.11n (2.4GHz) can transfer up to 150MB/s which is way higher than most of the cheap internet package speed around the world. In most cases, your internet package speed is the limiting factor.

Thank me later. 2.4GHz has a farther range and can go through solid objects although, it can be affected by things like a microwave or a house phone. 5GHz doesn’t get affected by anything and it has more no overlapping channels than the 2.4GHz but it has less range and it is harder for it to get through solid objects.

Anyone curious what the real world ranges are for the two bands? It depends on the 802.11 standard that your router and devices support. According to CenturyLink, the 802.11g,b,n standards (for 2.4 Ghz) reach 62 ft., 230 ft., and 410 ft. respectively. The 802.11a,n,ac standards ( for 5 Ghz) reach 195 ft., 230 ft., and 410 ft. respectively. A year after this video was made, the newest 5 Ghz standard is comparable to 2.4 Ghz in range.

The modem that was supplied by my cable company was a combo modem/router, unfortunately, it was fried when we had a power outage. The new modem they supplied was not a combo like my old one, whenever I switched to a different computer, I had to reboot the modem. I no longer had WIFI as before, so I no longer was able to use my Amazon Firestick. The cable company told me I needed to get their modem if I wanted to have the same access as my old one. I went to my local Walmart and purchased an ARRIS Surfboard SBG10 combo WIFI/Cable modem. Now I have the same capability as before, w/o making a monthly payment for their Router.
