My favorite feature of the dp32sd is the plug in and playability. PC recording studios seem to need lots of gadgets to get vocals & acoustics to sound right My tascam is quick & easy. Plug in, play. No more frustration & creativity killers. My music recorded with dp32sd has been on the radio and stood up to other music from professional studios. Love my Tascam dp32sd!

You’ll love the 32. Yeah, even if the simple lack of a CD burner was ‘staggering’ it is still very easy to save and manage your recordings. I didn’t see the date of your post. But, I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict your feelings towards the unit after diving in. You’re gonna love it! I’ve got one myself.

@@davearmuth5655 I still have it, but I use it only as a mixer. For recording it's still confusing to me, I don't use it often enough to remember how to save, and it always load my last project, and when I try to write a new one, it forgets my last settings. It's super confusing to me. But I had long since found a solution, I use something called Akai MPC Key 61, it's a keyboard but with a recording studio built inside, it's super easy to use, have used that over a year now, and it masters directly to MP3 or other formats, and it's as simple as a keypress, I love that.

@@joonglegamer9898I’ve got an MPC Live 2 but have been looking for some additional gear and I’m not 100% sure what the exact uses of a portastudio or workstation are. Would getting a DP24sd just be overkill and unnecessary since I already have a standalone with as much packed into it as the Live 2? I’d like to have something where I can expand my I/O (I use a lot of live instruments these days and record a lot of vocals) but I know I could always just use any interface. Should I just stick with using an interface?

I'm all ITB and I find that Ableton Live is the best for making electronic music. That said, I play in cover bands and I would LOVE to take a DP32sd into a practice room and just get a recording done without having to bring a fragile laptop, an audio-interface, and tell everyone to "Just wait a minute" while it loads up and while I create a session, set I/O's, arm the tracks and hope I haven't set the buffer too low for all of the tracks, then pack it all down without damaging the laptop. It just seems that much more fun and tactile to use a little desk like this in a flight case. Hook it up, record, take it home and then decide if I want to mix onboard of in Pro Tools or whatever. However, I rent a room in a house and I already have too much stuff. So I guess I'll keep dreaming until I own a home.

I have been using tascam for more than 30 years. I started with m520 mixer and tascam 38 1/2" 8 track, when the deck motors died I went to the tascam 2488 neo , I most recently add the newer one with out the cd drive. But very good to know I can link the to. Big Tascam fan. I also use the porta 2 4 track recorder and from time to time pull it out to remix old cassette and get that analog sound..

I'm really glad to have found this channel. Years ago I used the TASCAM DP-01 8 track and could create songs very quickly. After a lengthy break from recording, I started doing it again (this time with FL Studio). Though I really have no complaints about their products, there is something about switching between a computer and keyboard, etc that I find stifling to creativity. This was not the case with the multi-track. Plus, the latency! Save me from that. My set-up meets all the specs, but the least amount of latency is very distracting to me - I play jazz keys. If I record early on in a project, I can keep the buffer size (32 samples or less) small enough that it is manageable, but as more and more instruments get added, I have to increase the buffer length. And then you have to remember all the different lengths for each instrument recorded, because if you switch tracks, the latency compensation needs to go with it. There is even latency on MIDI instruments which is very hard to determine. All of this results in a great deal of frustration. Unless I am acting solely as the studio worker, with someone else playing, it is difficult to switch hats from computer tech to pianist. And every time I come up with a solution to one thing, it adversely affects something else. People tell me I'm imagining things when I say I can feel the difference between 0.5 ms and 1.5 ms. I tell them they must not be very sensitive to timing. So, I'm considering going back to the DP-24 and using my DAW solely for adding textures, strings, and slow sounds. I don't think DAWs work well for music in which there is unique timing, like jazz. Pretty much all the other KZbin channels sing the praises of DAWs. I am SO happy to hear someone complaining about the same things I've noticed. These videos are VERY educational. Thanks!

I grew up in the tape era and later had a Fostex digital multitrack in the mid-1990s which was awesome. Desktop computers IMHO are best used for editing music created on a standalone multitrack like the Tascam first. So all the spontaneous creativity happens on the non-computer gear, and then later the computer is used at what it does best.... editing and refining on a large screen and powering through repetitve work quickly with processing power, e.g. the less creative tasks/chores. Stuff like MIDI latency is solved by using a highly desirable Edirol UM-880 rack unit, and up to four of those can be chained on one PC giving 32in/32out with rock solid timing and low latency, probably the closest thing to using an Atari STE with Cubase! 😉 The trouble with people saying that latency can not be heard below a certain amount, are often those that do not play real instruments with fast lead work, who have not been used to using real instruments and recording on non-computer equipment. Any latency over say 5ms is easily detectable to an experienced skilled player, and over 10ms it makes certain music impossible IMHO.

Back in 2000 I sold my standalone Fostex digital multitrack and DAT recorder combo, to get a desktop PC with soundcard etc. That was a BIG MISTAKE and took me YEARS to fix (until 2013!). In hindsight I should have kept my Fostex gear and carried on with that for at least another six years, maybe fifteen because computers simply were not up to the task of studio recording in the 2000s, not without DSP assistance and a big budget and making huge compromises, to make sure things behaved reliably.

I have just recently started diving into the world of DAWless music production. I stare at a computer screen almost all day long every day. I like the idea of not being in a computer when I’m trying to create music. I have the Tascam Model 16. I have also been acquiring some analog equipment, four and eight track tape machines. I also bought a very cheap MacBook Pro from 2012 and a copy of Logic Pro 9. That way I have a DAW that will never be updated. I worked in Protools for years and had some major issues when I would upgrade hardware or Windows. Plus now, most DAW’s need an internet connection to even run and I live in a rural area with terrible internet. I totally dig your setup. Can’t wait to learn more.

I can’t believe there aren’t any companies interested in making an “all in one” recording system as an alternative to DAWs. If done correctly I think it would be a HUGE success. There used to be a similar system for graphics called “Video Toaster” that was imho superior to the computer alternative… in those days anyway.

I recorded music with a 5 Dollar i5 2400 and 16gb of DDR3 RAM. Cheap DAW, thousands of free VSTs...and I only upgraded recently. My new system is fast at video editing, has tons of cpu power, RAM etc and it cost me less than a used Tascam DP-32. You can buy a laptop for a few hundred bucks and record/edit/play/surf/learn or hack some government with it. Tell me how you want to beat that. Sometimes you have to move with the times. Regarding music production, it has never been easier, cheaper, better.

@@mantelmann13 If that is your preference then by all means. I have a very nice complete digital setup with a “registered” copy of Cubase Pro that I have used for several years. Also have an Maschine MK3, Komplete Kontrol S88, mixer, studio monitors, Electric, acoustic and bass guitars, and more software instruments than any reasonable person could ever use… lol. I understand where you are coming from though. There is no doubt more options and editing power by going digital. There is also a substantial learning curve and a lot of complexity involved in a digital setup. A well designed hardware unit would also have it’s own learning curve but in the end, and this is just one persons opinion, it would simplify the process immensely by reducing the amount of options.

The BEST way to utilize a dp32 is to employ it as a tape machine/recorder. Feeding the inputs of the dp32 with 8 tape outs from your console. The real disadvantage of tge dp32 is the connectivity. Really not alot of connectors. But it works great as a tape machine for your console.

I love the DP24, I've been using it for all of my recordings since 2014. I've made albums, soundtracks, and videos with it. To me, it makes everything sound like the 70's. I guess it's my detailed ear talking, but the DP24 has a distinct tone, it sounds natural almost like tape. Computer programs like Pro Tools sound very punchy and modern and I'm wondering how I can get the Tascam to get a little more punch. So, I'm looking into getting some analog compressors to see if that can beef up the sound a little. But overall, I love the Tascam because it's very hands on and fun to mix the knobs and stuff with my hands, I really love that interaction with it. It makes the recording seem that much more important. How do you get the most out of your Tascam? For me, the Tascam seems to have Professional sound quality according to 1970's standards, but for modern times, I feel like it can be a little more punchy. The instruments seem to lose a little bit of presence when I pan.

The mixdown and mastering functionality on the DP-24/DP-32 units are very good. Tascam has made it fairly simple to master with the units for those who struggle with the process. My best suggestion is to play with the functionality, and use the tools if you have not already. They are really effective, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
@Music4Movies-sr8vo
@Music4Movies-sr8vo Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have called Tascam and ask the to do an upgrade so that when you load up your song it will load up the mix. It loads everything except the volume levels. He said the volume slides wouldn’t match the levels, I told him all you would need to do is select each channel and slides the slides to match the volume setting on that channel. Like the Roland VS 1680. But I guess the other option would easer to have to write it down on a peace of paper and match the slides. And whoever took the media off the SD version should’ve been fired. Add it back and add $100 extra to it be well worth it.. I know they can fix the mix store problem and they could probably provide USB sync over USB. I have a little units that cost $100 and less it has USB on them. They need to think about their customers.

I have one of these and I use it for the the 24 tracks it offers. These machines are pretty poor as you cannot insert from its effects and bouncing and mastering is difficult. The boss Br 1600 is fantastic in comparison and so so easy to use. I record some tracks on the Tascam then send them to the Boss for the final mix using the on board mastering kit. You get a nice softer sound with Tascam and it's built like a tank, but the Boss is light years ahead of this machine.

And this I find to be very easy to operate and powerful, so long as you avoid buying a Presonus console :p On that Tascam, I find the display uncomfortably small. @PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
The metronome is agnostic of the location marks functionality, so it is not aware of those settings. This means there is no event programming in this regard. To change the metronome parameters the recorder must be stopped first. I checked and on the 1st GEN (MIDI) DPs and there is no MIDI control change message for the metronome, so no way to do that either via MIDI. The DP in this regard is old school. You manually change the time signature in your song’s arrangement while recording it. That’s what I’ve always done. We know the metronome can help in this regard, but it’s global on the DPs. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
