Badly recorded vocal tracks ruin a mix. Period. Many of us learned that the hard way no matter what machine you’re using to record them with. Ignore the rules for recording good vocal tracks and suffer the consequences. Over time I found that ignorance is not the answer. With this, I wanted to share this information with anyone who struggles with recording vocals or who just wants to learn more about best practices in this realm.

I have a question for you: if i want to record my voice using even a good quality mike pre- amp, could happen that i will reach the distortion level much before than make a recording without the use of the pre-amp? My microphone is the Shure super 55, which i use for practising with the band, and has given to me satisfying results without pre- amp, connected directly to the recorder (NO through the mixer) . I like to have your opinion/ tips about this speech. Hope my english has been understandable, i apologize of there is any grammar or words mistake! Thank you so much, a big kiss to Shahsta ❤🐾🐾 Patrick from Italy 👋

@@patrickbuzzo1970 It depends on the microphone and recording console used as to whether or not you need a microphone pre-amp. Some microphones are more powerful than others and some recording mixers and or consoles have very good pre-amps built-in. If you’re getting a great mic signal without a pre-amp, then I suggest you don’t use one unless the pre-amp is giving you a sound you like that you cannot get without it. Also Shasta passed away last November, and we miss her terribly. Thanks for watching and sharing.

@@bobbythompson4268 the DP24SD had a 40% discount! 😛 Also I use to play with 3 to 4 piece bands. 8 inputs are good enough for me, I think. Finally, I found that the DP32 has the same number of inputs. All in all, I think the two models are very similar 🤔but, obviously, 32 tracks gives you a lot more room for instruments and details. Cheers! 😎

Thanks for the informative video! The DP (We use 2 DP-32's) is an amazing sounding recorder for vocals (and everything else). We do all home recordings in an untreated studio and still get high quality results for just a couple guys doing this for fun. We used a vintage 1980s SM58 to record all our vocals on our 1st album (Neutral Earth) and they sound pretty good! For our 2nd album (Current, Volts & Ohms) we stepped up our microphone game and used Neumann TLM 102, AKG C3000B, Shure SM7B and the trusty SM58 microphones and I think it was an improvement. Now working on our 3rd album we've added a dbx 286s pre-amp processor and it is mind blowingly amazing! It makes your microphone come alive with added clarity and dimension. We also added a Rode NT1, Sennheiser e935 and Audio-Technica AT2020 microphones. The dbx 286s' compression makes recording consistant vocal levels a breeze, and that makes your mixing so much easier. Mixing the 1st album was truly an adventure do to my (Craig) inconsistant recording levels. We're still learning, improving and having fun! Love your videos! Thanks!

Thank you very much for these excellent reviews. Regarding the use of effects on the vocals during mixdown (versus during tracking as you suggest) creats an issue with these machines regarding the built in dynamic effects (ex. compression) since they cannot be added during mixdown on the Dp-24 and 32. I was wondering if you could perhaps address in a video, how to best use one of the Tascam's dynamic effects such as compression during tracking of the vocal (ex. settings, levels). On theae machines the dymmic effects are digital, which of course is not the same as using an analog comperssor to control levels during tacking (which is so helpful on fitting a vocal track in the mix strongly). It would be helpful to know how best to set levels going in from an outboard mic pre and/or outboard mic pre/compessor combo into the Tascam machines. I would assume you would use as little as the built in preamps as possble (This would be very helpful to a lot of us). It would also be helpful to know your overall opinion of he Tascam pre-amps as for many folks, not having to buy and use outboard equipment is one of the key reasons we buy these machines (cost and ease of use) Thanks again!
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Adding effects to vocal recordings during mix down should not be an issue with DP units, unless you don’t have an external effects processor, which limits you to onboard effects. If that’s the case, then printing an effect during recording is what people do. When it’s not, the unit has 2 effects sends to accommodate adding whatever external effects processor(s) that you want and or need during mix down. For more information on this, watch my video, “Tascam DP24/DP32 Digital Portastudio: Using External Effects” on this channel. In addition, I also addressed your other question in a previous video regarding using internal effects with the DP-24. Check out the video, “Tascam DP24/DP32 Digital Portastudio: Using Built In Effects & EQ” on this channel. The DP has a library of pre-programmed effects created by professional studio engineers for you to choose from. My suggestion is to experiment with these to see which, is right for your specific vocal mix. The preamps on the DPs from my perspective are fine. They are not the best, but the quality is more than enough to get professional results if utilized correctly. To be specific, I primarily use external preamps when recording microphones and acoustic guitars. Sometimes on keyboard patches if I’m going for a warmer sound. If you have not already, please check out the DP Playlist on this channel. Lots of good information there. Thanks for watching and sharing and I hope this information serves useful. 👍🏿

Thanks for the info. Question: how are the built-in mic preamps on the DP-24SD, are they good enough to plug most mics into them, or would using an external mic preamp (such as the ART that was briefly shown in your video) offer a noticeable improvement in sound quality? Also, if an external mic preamp is used, or another external mixing board is connected to the DP-24SD, are the built in mic preamps bypassed?

I have a better studio recording microphones that I am saving money for but for now I am recording vocals with a supercardioid dynamic microphone, the CAD D90. I took note "do not supply a dynamic mic with phantom power" would you still advise not using it with this mic? THANKS AGAIN for all your uploads! They are a huge help.
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
If you apply phantom power to a dynamic mic, and the amount of phantom power going to each pin is uneven, the dynamic mic will be destroyed. Good cables are critical, but if you choose to do that you roll the dice and take your chances. Thanks so much for watching and sharing. It's much appreciated. 👍🏿

@@PowercoatMusic Thanks so much. I just exactly one day ago upgraded to a thicker more durable looking mic cable for recording! I think I only Applied phantom only once on one take of a song. I hope my mic is still okay after that one take in the studio. I did use it during a live performance today and it seemed fine . I will not do it again. If I use the mic again ill just use it without phantom, its sounded good during vocal recording without phantom anyways.

Thank you for the video. I am a novice, so the tutorial was needed. QUESTION: You stated Microphones carry weak signals. Thus, is a preamp necessary? I have an AKG P420 with no pre-amp and a Rode NT-1-A, which is connected to a Zoom V3 vocal processor. I have the vocal processor outputs connected to mic input A-H. While singing into Rode with Zoom V3 I can hear myself loud and clear via the headphones and when phones are disconnected, I can hear myself loud and clear through the monitors. While singing via AKG, I must turn my monitor level pass 50% to hear sound through headphones or monitor. Do I need a preamp for the main mic? Lastly, I watched another video of yours where you talked about external effecters which are connected to effects sends on backs of Tascam dp-24-sd. Should my vocal processor be connected here instead of to the microphone input jacks?

I was told using an external preamp is useless with the dp24 as you can't override the Tascam Preamp. So If I am using my external preamp - a universal audio la610 going into the Tascam - will the Tascam just ignore the La610 and use the Tascam preamp instead or will i get the full capability of the la610 preamp going into the Tascam! You're the man.
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
The point of using an external preamp is not to try to override the Tascam preamp. It's to enhance and or change the sonic quality of the audio source prior to recording. It's suggested in order to nail or get as close as possible to a sound you need and or want up front, as opposed to trying to "Fix it in the Mix". DP-24 preamps are not bad. So if they are presented with a source that's been prepped, then they do even better. This is why using an external preamp with the Tascam DP-24 is not at all "Useless". Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿

Powercoat Music you are the best. I can always count on you. A few people made me feel like using the external preamp wouldn't work with the Tascam. I'm glad a professional like you disagrees with that as well. I'm a huge Tascam fan and prefer it over DAW sometimes. It be a shame to find out you couldn't make it even better with external preamps so this is great news.

Thank you for the tutorial, I definitely learned some important stuff. A subject that I need more clarification on is mic preamps. My experience with my Tascam 244 is that it had very good preamps. Are the DP24 preamps no good, is that why you suggest buying a good preamp to use with the DP24? If the DP24 preamps are not all that good, could I use the 244 preamps and run the 244 to the DP24? For the ART Studio V3 preamp that you show, if I was using a condenser mic through that preamp and into the Tascam desk, would the Tascam need to be set to phantom power ON, or does the studio V3 provide phant pow. so I could leave it OFF?

The ART provides Phantom Power, so you could use that if you chose to. Thanks for watching and sharing.

How do you toggle the monitors ON/OFF so that the playback is only coming through the headphones instead of both headphone and speaker? On my old Tascam 2488 there used to be a "mute monitor" button right next to the monitor level control knob but this work station doesn't seem to have one. I'd really hate to think that I would have to manually turn my monitors on/off between takes just so we can record. Can anyone help answer this for me?

Can you use the effects or dynamics WHILE recording vocals? I did not hear any difference at all in vocals even though I tried ... vocal was dry and flat, and I like reverb on my voice while recording...

Great video! Just wondering if any of you have experienced an overly hot input to the DP24SD (I'm referring specifically to the Audio-Technica AT2030 microphone)? Even with the mic's -10db pad turned on, and the rolloff on, PLUS zero gain AND the input fader all the way down, my AT2030 is clipping when I try recording a kick drum. Even outside of the head, this is happening. (When used for vocals, at about 8 inches away, the mic sounds great.) Not sure what is happening with either the mic or the Tascam unit. I may just have to try an in-line attenuator. Got any other ideas?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
If the mic is that hot, one suggestion is to set the mic even further away from the source in the room (3 feet or more). Another is to use an external pre-amp to control the mic as that should help significantly. Check out my video "ART Studio V3 Voiced Valve Preamplifier: Why and How I Use It", on this channel. We know that recording requires a lot of experimentation, so give these suggestions a try and let me know what happens? Thanks for watching an sharing. 👍🏿

Good good video but, although you may not want to use effects permanently in the recording of your vocals at the moment of singing them. You may want to use a little bit of effect as you're singing them to help with inspiration. How can you do that? I'm talking like maybe throwing a little reverb on there, or even a little compression and a little reverb. How can one do that?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Creating a separate vocal headphone mix is common and simple to do. Connect an external effects processor to the DP-24 Effect Send output 2 on the back of the unit. Don’t run the external effects processor returns back to the DP-24’s inputs. Use those returns for your vocal headphone mix. Push the MIXER button to control the effects 2 settings. Now you can isolate and use whatever effects you desire for the vocal session and not print the effects during recording. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿

Powercoat Music couldn't you also do this by simply taking the reverb off during mixdown but keep it on during recording to just get reverb while you do the take. Thank you!

Question... so the Tascam channel preamps don’t work as great as an external preamp for a condenser?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
This is not a Tascam preamp issue. Microphones output what is known generally as “mic level” signal. Mic level is typically specified between a nominal −60 dBu and −40 dBu. However, professional audio equipment works with audio signals that are at line level, which is nominally +4 dBu. Notable “Professional equipment” includes mixing consoles and digital audio workstations. External preamps are often used to compensate for this, which is normal.

Thank you for a great video. About phantom power, what should I do when I use ONE mic that requires phantom but the rest NOT? Since the button switches it for 4 inputs, can I combine phantom and non-phantom mics?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 3 жыл бұрын
If your mic cables are all wired properly (balanced, with the correct pin connections) and well made, and you’re using quality XLRs everywhere, and all your microphones are modern, there should not be a problem. In some professional studios, phantom power is provided on all box connections, and is always on. Professionals use dynamic, condenser and even ribbon mics constantly in those environments. However if you are worried about it, I suggest using an external mic pre-amp with Phantom power for your input, and leave the Phantom power off on the DP for the rest of your mics. I hope this information helps. Thanks for watching and sharing.

@@PowercoatMusic thanks for great content and quick answer. Actually, I am now planning to get the DP-24 and your videos are among the most helpful ones. I get it with the mics, I thing there will be no problem. What about other instruments? Lets say I use 2 inputs for mics and the rest of the 4 powered inputs for bass (Sansamp) and guitar (Kemper). Will they also be safe?
