Also mentioning the VS 880 yes it’s got great effects on it. You could come out of effect 2 send on your Tascam into the VS 880 and use those effects and rout it back in to your tascam on two of your inputs.

​@@DigitalDoxologyThe internal fx are not the greatest on the Tascam. I'm running out of send 2 into a rack mount effects unit, then out of the L and R of the rack unit into two inputs and assigned to a stereo track. I'm also overriding the internal fx by running out of send 1 of the Tascam into a different rack unit the same way. You could start super simple and run Send 2 into a guitar pedal and back into an input on the Tascam. You'd have your internal fx for send 1, then that pedal, (reverb, delay, etc...) to play with in your send 2. Good luck. Thanks for the great videos. 👍

My hone studio is similar. Korg Nautilus 61 key and another retro 61 key workstation. Tascam DP32SD. Akai MPC 2000 Studio Plus. HP desktop with Cockos Reaper. I use my Tascam exclusively for tracking midi sequenced music, via SMPTE, and for exclusively tracking vocals. MPC is used as midi sequencer. Processing is done exclusively in Cockos Reaper, via HP desktop.

You and I on on the same wave length.....My studio is very similar....I use a Native instrument 49 key, then to my, externall units, to my Tascam DP24 then to Logic........I master in Logic, save as Mp3 and Wave......Then use Final Cut Pro for my video.........Small world......I started years ago with a sony TC 280...reel to reel.....Record two tracks, multi track........Stepped up to a /Tascam 388,,,,,and I still have....boucing out to CAKEWALK on ans old IBM XT....Monochrome screen.........Still love it, and still write,,,,,just turned 71,,,,,just lovin it.!

This might just have been an oversight, but remember if you’re cutting an instrument like you definitely don’t need to use two tracks. The task can is a great recorder. Their only drawback was that they took the midi of it. I’ve had several conversations with them about that that should’ve been fired, because midi expands the whole process . And the other and they did which could easily be fixed with the firmware is when you log one song to the next all the settings are saved, except the volumes of each track I do have a sink box that will produce mid sink that I hook up to my tascam. It works, but you have to set your tempo and instruct your time code. Nice setup. Jo cooper PPS2 sink

Wow, your just like me. I started when I was about 17 with a boom box w/ built in mic and recorded on cassette tape. Then around 20 I bought a Yamaha 4 track recorder, cassettes also but on one side of the cassette I had to put these little silver stickers on it in order for it to record. Then at 25 or so I bought an Akai daw which recorded on a hard drive and those drives would crash all the time. Guess when it crashed? Right when I had about 95% of the song done! 🤬 Had to replace the drives about 3 times! Now I have The Tascam Dp24sd. I love writing music and recording. I'm 65 now and do it almost every day. Thanks for the great videos and explaining them in a slow and simple way! 👍. I don't have a computer so I transfer the songs to a CD. I plan on sending them into a company called Taxi or Songtown. These people listen to your song and give feedback. If there good enough then the place tries to find artist that record your songs. Then I can make millions of dollars. Lol Yeah right, good luck with that! 😅😅😅

Hi How are you doing? You have a nice setup. It is nice to sit down and write and record your own music. You are not on the clock in the studio where you have to pay by the hour. I have been writing and recording my own music for years. I sing and play the keyboard. I can relate what you said about the radio. When I first started recording I was around 16 years old and I would have 2 radios and I would record. I used to be a lead vocalist in heavy metal bands. After the bands I started being a solo artist. I started recording with a Tascam 8 track reel to reel, then years later a Tascam 4 track with a cassette tape, then a Tascam digital 8 track, then a 24 track Tascam. Now I use Logics Pro X. I wish I still had all the other machines. Keep recording your music. Hope you have a blessed day.

I am well thanks! sorry about the slow reply - I just noticed this comment this morning, somehow it never came up on my notifications for some reason. Every once in a while that happens and I can't figure out why. Yes it's nice to have a set up at home where I can experiment and create on my own schedule. I was a full-time teacher until recently (now retired) and the weekends (or week nights occasionally) were my only time to do recording. I also had a side-gig that took up extra time and a family on top of that! lol That's life right? Hope you're enjoying your solo music time as well and have a great week.

Great video, you present things so simply. I am a newbee, have a DP24 and having trouble assigning effects/compression to tracks. I have staggered through so many videos and it seems the more I watch the more frustrated I get. Do you know of a simple Tascam tutorial source or do you have a video? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I will get to learn this Tscam as my Yamaha really has had it, but I can't complain after 23 CDs!! I am like you in that I prefer external FX. I only ever used the on board Hall Reverb in the Yamaha which was on mix down to my mini disc which I still love using. The best facility I have seen on any disc recorder is the Auto Pause function. The machine sits there until there is a signal for it to record, which is perfect on mix down. I think I will load Audacity on to my PC to see if I can edit my WAV files myself. I have always let the studio do that when they Master my tracks, but as a musician you will understand and probably agree, we don't like others fiddling with our music. The other facility I like is Fenders programing my amp through my phone using wifi from their end to set my sound in my amp after listening to me play on You Tube. They tell me should I rob a bank to get enough funds to buy a new professional Fender I can go into any guitar shop, point my phone at a Fender amp and my setting will appear, so I can hear my sound when trying out new guitars. Very clever. Now after watching your tutorials I need to unhook the Yamaha and add the Tascam. The first task would be to assign channels 3 and 4 to accept a feed from Cakewalk to record a backing track. That's where I need to start and pan it 12 to the left and 12 to the right. I don't do the full pan to 16 as it always sounds like some instruments have vanished. I have my tracks custom made in Denmark and then I load them into Cakewalk and edit the midi files as to how I like Them. I always use channel 4 for the melody line which I print off the sheet music then mute the track. After removing stuff I don't like I record in real time on to the desk which will now be the Tascam. Great minds think alike? Almost identical recording history. I started with a Tascam reel-to-reel 2 track, then on to a Fostex 4 track cassette that ran at 2x speed (3ips or so) then on to the Roland Vs880 with CD burner, then on to a PC with CakeWalk, then to an SD recorder the ZoomR24. I've been recording with the Zoom now for 10 years, and have no plans to record any other way. My studio is 100% hardware, don't use a computer at all, full of various synths, groove box, sampler, digital piano, and hardware effects. I sub mix all my instruments through a Mackie VLZ analog mixer and then record 8 tracks simultaneously on the ZoomR24. I have been recording Vagelis style since the Zoom where all instruments are fine tuned for mix/levels/effects/EQ/panning before I begin my recording. I practice the song for a few days and get accustomed to all the switching of sequencers and which synth to play and which synths get combined. Through the use of many floor pedals, I control the entire studio through MIDI cables. Using both hands and feet, switching mutes on sequenced tracks and sustain/switch/expression pedaling get everything to orchestrate perfectly together. This recording technique lets me play with all the feeling and passion of a finished song as I play. All effects and processing print wet to the 8 tracks and are finished except for mixdown which is nothing more than some minor fader movements, usually nothing more than mixdown to two track master. I can play with passion and improvise on the fly if I desire, the results have been staggering with 70 albums recorded over the last 10 years. I have just rebuilt my studio again (for the 100th time:) and got rid of some old synths that never sounded good. My replacements are very close to your choices. A Korg Krome and a Roland FantomO6. We have been through it all, the recording revolution, haven't we? Replaced the crappy Behringer mixers with Mackie's, added ZoomCDR foot pedal effects along with a NightSky. As soon as I can figure out the new (new today) Roland Fantom I will be recording again. The presets on the Fantom are horrible, seems there will be much work to get this synth to sound good with custom sound designs. One big reason for the ZoomR24 is the huge bright recording meters on each track that are positioned next to each fader. As a solo musician who records 32 channels of instruments in one take, those meters are very important, letting me know from anywhere in the room if my levels are not peaking or too low. The other reason is fantastic sound at 16bit/44.1kH. Keep in touch and keep making music!

Have you tried just working in the kronos? 16 tracks of audio. I mean you can even burn cds with the kronos just by adding a usb optical drive. 16 audio tracks might sound like a limitation but, you can do lets say 16 tracks of background vocals on song 000. Then move on to song 001 with a stereo bounce of the background vocals. Now you have 14 audio tracks and so on. So you can always go back if need be.

Good suggestion - I’ve messed around with recording audio a little bit on the Kronos, but not as much as I could or should I guess. For me, I’ve developed a system using the Tascam to record my audio, then using the Kronos (and Fantom too) for sounds and layers I want - it just works faster and easier for me. It’s crazy how overwhelming it can get sometimes with technology, lol!

Great question - mostly because I am so comfortable using the Tascam, it works for me and what I do. Now, I’ve messed around with it some but haven’t really dived into it. So many other things I am trying to learn right now lol (Finale, Final Cut Pro, Revoicer and a few others) it’s on my list of projects to try for sure! Glad you enjoyed the music 😄

The top part I made myself, the bottom part is a two tier kb stand I’ve had for years. I made a shelf for the top out of plywood from Home Depot. The attachment I found on Amazon to hold the camera overhead while recording 😉

Why not record straight into the laptop ? I love the idea of the Portastudio but computers and DAWs do so much. My journey has been similar to yours. Boom box to 3 head reel to reel (aka sound on sound) to 4 track cassette to 8 track reel to reel to VS880 and then a Cubase setup. I have none of that now but I am about to tool up again and love the idea of the simplicity but the shortcomings of the DP like not having midi are frustrating. I do like the idea of limitations I just don't know if I can live with them.

Fair assessment to be sure! It’s ultimately whatever you are comfortable with using that matters. It’s hard to explain to someone why I prefer the one way over the other because I use my PC for a lot of things, writing, video, photo and games and such - maybe 🤔 it’s the change of pace that appeals to me the most (using the Tascam) over using another DAW/PC based process…

I have a question for you, I used to have the DP03SD and what I liked is that while I was recording I could hear the effects in my headphones at the same time as I was singing for example, I now own the DP24SD and I haven't been able to figure out how to hear myself record with the effects in the headphones. In fact I don't have external monitor speakers as I was hoping to start working right away with headphones and once I can, buy the speaker/monitors. Thank you for taking a minute to reply

You can do that with the dp-24 too, just the set up is a little different. Go into the mixer menu and you have to select “insert effect” as well as adjust the “send eff1 and eff2” levels. Also be sure to select Reverb as well and turn it on and set type etc.. that’s basically how it works in a nutshell.

Hello, are you using a laptop or desktop? either way - you would have to use the audio out on the Mac and run it into the Dp-24sd. You could probably use the headphone output (3.5mm on the side) it should work just fine. Otherwise - I have heard there are some USB-C/to Audio DAC connectors (check Amazon for availability) hope this helps,

I’m using what’s called a “Combi” on the Kronos - each combi has layers of instruments, an arp or Karma setting as well as an assigned rhythm included that is triggered when you play. You can also turn drums on and off as needed. Tritons and the Nautilus have combis as well. I hope that makes sense…

Hey! Thanks for all the useful info! I'm just starting my hardware journey wanting to become untethered from a PC. The workflow is just becoming so uninspiring lately sitting in front of a screen in my living room mouse-clicking away. The PC DAW platform, I have to admit, is really powerful but since I've been messing around with hardware synths and samplers, I feel refreshed. Which brings me to my question. Do you feel the the mastering section is good enough on the DP-24 sd on it's own, for a hobbyist who just wants to share their music on Bandcamp or KZbin, without using a PC to do further mastering?

For me it seems to be a better way to go - it's what I am used to and have used for years. I'm not being down on DAW's and I think they are really cool, but work flow on the Tascam is so much faster for me. Yes, the DP-24sd has some good basic mastering capabilities and effects on board without having to use a PC. Although I sometimes run my songs though Audacity once to look it over first (Maybe tweek the EQ a bit, or run compression etc. over the whole mix and edit starting cue etc) before sending on to Soundcloud or KZbin. I've heard from a lot of folks who feel the same way too...

Hey there, I've never tried to import audio myself but know it's supposed to work - here's a suggestion: I am assuming you want to transfer audio files, as far as I know, "wave" files are the best (only?) files to use - however you might be able to load mp3 files as well I'm not sure on that. I would load the wave files you want to export onto a blank SD card from your PC first, then load that same SD card into your Tascam and see if it accepts them into memory. Experiment with a blank SD card first so you don't loose any valuable files. I don't know if you've done this already or not. But that's were I would start. Dave, I'm getting NO volume on my guitar track. I put a backing track on trks 1 & 2. I'm trying to record LEAD GUITAR TRK on trk 3 but I can't get any volume. It looks fine on the meter by the volume is very low. Can you help me...again? Thanks. I even tried plugging a line from my amp direct and I still get no volume

My best advice is to go back and double check everything (maybe you've done this already... but here goes anyway) make sure you have the input for track 3 set to the same source input as the guitar is using (I always use H and make sure you have it set on the back for Guitar input - the little orange Guitar light comes on) I also recommend using headphones so you don't get feedback. I have an Ovation acoustic electric that I use and it will feed back if I am using the monitors. Make sure you have the track "triggered" for recording (the red light is on) also double check the black "Trim" knob to make sure it's turned up. I usually set mine about 1/2 way if you go to high the "OL" button will light up showing you have it overloaded. Also, here's another thing - are you trying to hear through headphones, monitor outs or Stereo outs? I use headphones and stereo outs just for my own tastes but Monitor outs will operate a little differently. it you're still having issues - try turning off the effects and see if you can get just the raw guitar coming through. It could be something you have set in the effects area is not allowing the guitar to come into the mix. I hope something here helps, sometimes you just have to try different things and troubleshoot the problem that way - if you are like me, you will suddenly stumble onto something you missed and it starts working for you! I have a Ultranova synth, and just got a tascam 32sd for recording. I also have a drum machine and a looper. I want to connect the deum machine and synth to my looper and then record all the sounds tonthe tascam. Would I need to connect the synth, deum machine and looper to a mixer, snd then connect the mixer to the Tascam, or am I able to connect the synth, looper and drum machine to the tascam?

You can connect up to eight separate devices/inputs and record at the same time on the Tascam. You would probably want to have stereo outs (right and left) for keyboard, drum machine and looper - so It sounds like you’d have room for one more stereo device or two microphones even?

Mine freezes up after about 10 minutes of use. I've spent more money looking for the perfect SD card than I paid for the Tascam DP-24SD. I still have the same problem. My system version is 1.09 0026. I've lost hours of recordings. Anything else I can try?

Definitely Weird! Just for grins I checked my unit, it reads system version 1.08 0024. Hmm, not sure how to best guide you on this… I wonder if there’s a way to do a whole system restore on these things? I would Check online first see if anyone else has had similar issues, and then contact Tascam directly. Might be a bad unit.

When I record a song on the Tascam, it records in wave format (.wav) then I load it into the computer which can convert it into an mp3 format (.mp3) - mp4 is used for video files mp3 for audio files. Hope that helps.

Hi David, I just bought this Tascam as my Yamaha AW16G has about had it after having recorded 23 CDs over 20 years. I now return to Tascam having owned one a lifetime aga when they were huge and very heavy, I record guitar instrumentals and I use Cakewalk Sonar to mix my custom made midi files and record them on to my portastudio. I would normally record my backing track on channels 3 & 4 for left and ight and my guitar parts on other channels. After recording 'Dry' I then use a hall reverb and send it to my 3632 Alesis compresspr / noise gate / limiter and record it to CD. Then create a WAV file that I can forward to a studio for Mastering. Can I bypass any of this using the Tascam? My worry is the hall reverb. Is that available in the Tascam? My guitar has many different bits of kit I use when I am recording. I prefer the clean sound and I have a Yamaha Mustang pre-set by Fenders with my sound. I have just finished recording my latest CD so now is the time for the brave new world. Thank you for your time and your videos.. Peter

Sounds like you've worked out a good system for yourself and your music, it really is about what's comfortable for you to use and not get all bogged down by other crap. lol. I have found the Tascam to be very easy to use and intuitive as well. The only thing about it that's been giving me fits is not feeling really solid on using all the built-in effects, sends and routings etc. and just when I think I've learned it and got it down - I realize then I wasn't doing something right after all. Other then that it's fine. I don't have a CD burner on my Tascam, just have it send a WAV file to my PC then use Audacity to tweak everything from there. I still have my old VS-880 sitting on it's shelf though *(trying to sell it, but I guess it's too old) and considering using it for some things - It really had a great effects board in it! some of the best just not enough hard drive space to really do big projects and I am afraid it might die on me. Keep on plugging away and best wishes for you CD!

Depends on what you want to do with it - I suggest looking into the Korg Nautilus, Yamaha Motif or Roland Fantom 0 series even. But whichever you choose, make sure you try it out first if you can! Good luck.

Hi Paul, I am using videos from Artgrid (Artgrid.io) and I had to sign up and join - it wasn't cheap but they had such beautiful high quality videos that I went ahead and signed up so I could put my music with the videos since so much of my music is kind of aimed along cinematic/visual themes. The nice thing is the membership covers copyright and use on KZbin. There are some other companies out there that have similar set ups as well. If I could go travel all over the world and do my own video work I would in a heart beat - lol! But I figured that it would be much cheaper to just pay to use their videos. Hope that helps. Dave
